Questions & Answers

What kind of insulation do I use over blown in top of 2x6 faced or unfaced on top of blowin

Right I'm tring to figure out which is cheaper and easyest way togo I know those to words don't goto gether well cheap and easy Roll or blowin I have 25x25 sq 1000sq ft attic to insulate entery hatch is in back bed room? Thank You
Asked by: fab411
When the Existing insulation is either unfaced batts or loose-fill, the New insulation should be unfaced fiberglass batts OR blown in fiberglass loose-fill. If the existing insulation is an encapsulated product, both unfaced product and blow in insulation can be added on top of an existing encapsulated product.

How is it possible that equivalent roll insulation of the same R-value is thiner? Same manufacturer, both unfaced. Roll 9 inches thick while batt is 9.5 inches thick?
Asked by: Victor
This is a function of the manufacturing & packaging processes. Both products are designed to provide R-30 thermal resistance once installed per manufacturer’s instructions. Thank you for your inquiry!

I have a 7 inch cavity between ceiling joists. Is 6.25 inch thick or compressing 8 inch thick insulation better?

Asked by: Garageloft
Slightly compressed 8” batt insulation will provide more R-value than 6.25" batt insulation in a cavity with a depth of 7". If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact a representative at your local Home Depot ProDesk and they will be happy to assist you. Or you can call 1-800-HOME-DEPOT (1-800-466-3337) and someone will be happy to assist you as well. Thank you for your inquiry!

My attic floor joists are redwood actual 2x4" not nominal 2x4 I want to put in attic insulation. Is it worth it if I use 6.25" thick vs 3.5" insulatn?

Even if the 6.25 thick insulation sticks up 2.25" above the height of each 4" tall ceiling joist, will it give me that extra insulation in the winter or is it better to just use 3.5" thich insulation between the actual 4" tall joists? Would I be wasting my money getting the thicker? Is it another problem that when someone ever needs to get access to the crawl space in the attic (perhaps every couple of years ) they would have to step between the batts to step on the rafters?
Asked by: Rental cottage landlord
Hi Rental cottage landlord, The thicker insulation will give you a higher R valve and retain more heat in the winter and save energy. The extra insulation is well worth the cost. Stepping on the insulation is not a problem as long as it is restored to the original height after the work in the attic is complete. Mike,

R-30 Unfaced Insulation Batts 24 in. x 48 in. is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.

This product was very easy to install, in this case, as ceiling insulation in a garage with a cold roof design. Baffles protecting the birdblock vents we're previously installed, so the insulation bats we're positioned snuggly against those. Installation in the outer, low roof angle regions were easy, by use of a fiberglass roller paint pole as a tool to both lift and push outward the bat from the underside first. Overall, the bats provided a very uniform layer of R-30 insulation. There was only minimal fiberglass "dust" from this product. I would prefer insulation bats over blow in personally, as there was almost no clean up afterwards, and unlike blow in, there is no settling, assuring instead a known R-value. Great product. The image is of bats being lifted through an access opening in a 16' high ceiling.
