Rolls Insulation

Rolls

Continuous rolls are easy to transport and can be cut to length; great for large areas

Batts Insulation

Batts

Questions & Answers

Installing insulation on existing insulation.

I bought an old house that currently has R-11 fiberglass insulation between the 2x8 rafters. I want to install R30 roll out fiberglass over the existing insulation. Can I lay the new insulation over the old insulation? Does there need to be a layer of insulation that covers the rafters?
Asked by: WGABill
It sounds like the existing insulation (R-11) is coming up short of the of the top edge of your 2x8 rafters / ceiling joists. I would run R-13 Un-faced on top of the R-11 between your ceiling joists to fill the Void, and then run the R-30 un-faced perpendicular to the rafters / ceiling Joists. That should give you a little more than R-50.

my Attic is done with 2X8s and this is thicker, I want to put plywood down for storage as this area is over my garage. Will this be a problem

Asked by: Rusty
I had a similar problem. There's an easy fix.I installed 2x4's on top of the ceiling joists.

Thought about doing Spray foam insulation in my attic but my wife and I are very sensitive to any chemicals so I'm thinking about insulating my roof substrate with this. Currently, my roof has the radiant barrier (some sort of board with a reflective material) installed. Can I use this to insulate between joists? Do I need faced or unfaced for my application? My attic is not vented. My attic floor has enough insulation (blown in cellulose) but it gets pretty hot in the attic where my AC/duct is located and my top floor (3 story townhome) is hot compared to other floors so my AC has to work extra. I'm in Houston, TX.
Asked by: TK
I would not insulate between the joists if the roof is not vented. Usually, you would need ridge vents or soffit vents and you would need rafter vent (foam spacers) between the insulation and roof to allow for airflow. Your best bet may be to further insulate the AC ducts instead.

Does the R-30 have the one-sided paper on it?

No, this product is unfaced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hard job made easier with this product My husband and I purchased this insulation on sale and chose this brand due to its eco friendly properties and R-30 rating. We installed 50 rolls in our attic over a couple of weekends. This product performs as advertised and reviewed: No vocs, itch free, can tear it with your hands if you left your matt knife 20 feet behind you on a board in the attic. Absolutely the best choice we could have made for our project. If you have a low ceiling attic this is the way to go.....easier to roll and push with broom handles to edges than hunch and crouch with the blow-in type insulation which is what I helped my brother do in his attic.

It was packaged well and able to fit 20 rolls in the Chevy Acadia. It helped tremendously with the temperature in the house especially upstairs. The rolls were easy to maneuver and cut to size. I am glad I went with this over the blown in due to the look and not having to rent a machine to get it done. The rolls didn't create a big mess that blown in insulation creates. You still need to wear a mask, but I have done blown in and it gets everywhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lessons learned on installation Installed ten rolls in three hours. Easy to do. Just need long sleeves, knee pads, glasses, knife, two boards to cut it, and six foot pole to put insulation in position. Two tips. 1) I must have bumped my head a 100 times on the rafters. Wear a bicycle helmet to protect your noggin. 2) Use a strap to hold your glasses on. Gets a tad sweaty and they start to fall off while your hands a full. Tried it without glasses, but the dust started getting in my eyes. Regular safety glasses worked just fine. If you find some that are wrap around goggle type, they would do a tad better. I will compare electric bills before and after and post the results later this summer.

Wanting to cut the amount paid to utility company I decided to add more insulation. The rolls made it to take up ladder and into attic. Once in place and unrolled I was impressed on how much it actually expands. Living in Arizona I've yet to run the AC. The house has stayed cool. Have not had it installed long enough yet to see the savings but I believe it will be well worth the money spent.

Doesn't shed except a little when cut. Really did not cause any itching. But still wear a mask and eye coverage to be sure. I did my whole attic, it me three times longer than I expected as there were tough places to get to and cutting to fit around joists and things.

Today it was 5 degrees F outside and I am in a t-shirt enjoying the insulation provided comfort. This was the best thing I have done for my house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product at reasonable cost I've placed about 12 of these rolls in our attic so far this month as an additional layer over some blown-in insulation. The insulation is easy to work with. I use eye protection, mask, gloves, and long sleeves and pants, and have not had any problems. The rolls are about 23 inches in diameter which make it relatively easy to move up through small attic openings. The insulation expands rapidly and is easy to cut when necessary. There are some good videos available online on how to use it. See Owens Corning's videos on YouTube. You really can't go wrong with this for attics.
