Why does R30C have a thickness of 8.25" when two layers of R15 have a combined thickness of only 7"?

Asked by John January 4, 2021

Answer

Hello John, R-30C was designed to meet Code required R-30 in 2x10 framing. You are correct that you can get to R30 with less overall thickness by using two layers of R15. Scabbing on 2x3’s with 2 layers of R-15 will get you the R-30 and leave 1” for ventilation. Thank you for your inquiry!

Can you use R30C on attic floors? My attic has 2 x8’s and I’d like the top of the insulation to be level with the beams

Hello Thor, R-30C may be used for this type of application. Thank you for your inquiry!

Hi Scott, you would need to reach out to your local Home Depot store for product availability. Thank you for your inquiry!

I’m putting this in a cabin in northern Maine. The rafters are 16” on center and I used true 2” x10” rough cut lumber

Asked by LilFella December 9, 2017
1
Answer

Hi LilFella, if using true 2x10s, you will have over an inch of air flow under the roof deck without the need to run any baffles under the entire deck. The product is designed with a slight difference in density which allows for the inch of airflow when installed in nominal 2x10 cavities, while still delivering a true R-30 rating. Thank you for your inquiry!

Asked by Miguel October 28, 2017

Answer

Hi Miguel, compressing the insulation will lead to a loss of R-Value of the product. Without furring down to create a deeper cavity, we recommend using a batt such as the R-21 or R-19 that will allow for some airflow under the roof deck if it is properly vented. We also recommend maintaining proper ventilation under the roof deck. Thank you for your inquiry!

I can buy the same exact insulation in the store at $38.20 per bag so 10 bags would be $382.00. ...

I ordered this to use in the slope of the ceiling in the attic I was finishing. It was a little hard to find, but this is what you want if you have a 2x10 rafters and want to put baffles in the runs for a vented roof. Normal R30 is 9 1/2" thick which is the full space you'd have in 2x10 runs, leaving no room for vents against the roof sheathing. These R-30C batts provide the full R30 at 8 1/4" thick, which leaves you a little space for baffles/vents.

This material is higher cost/sqft than other R30 material, but well worth it: its expanded thickness fits 2x8 rafters in floors and 2x10 in cathedral ceilings allowing air flow. The 48" lengths are great for ceiling work, friction holds it up while you staple the edges. Ecotouch is significantly less skin irritating, but still always wear mask and gloves when installing!
