Q:If we have an unfinished attic, can we install the insulation between the frames on the walls/ceilings with out drywall overtop? Is the drywall necessary or just cosmetic if leaving the room unfinished?

A:Â Hello Heather, The Kraft facing on the insulation is flammable and must be in contact with a 15-minute thermal barrier such as 1/2" drywall. Thank you for your inquiry!

Answer This Question
A:Â Check with building code. But I believe 15min thermal barrier meant must be covered, like a rated drywall, plywood etc that matches or exceeds the 15 min fire span in case it happened.

A:Â Hello Bern, The facing acts a vapor retarder, however, the facing is flammable and needs to be covered by a 15 minute thermal barrier such as 1/2" drywall. Thank you for your inquiry!

Answer This Question
A:Â Hello Same, First you would want to verify with your local building codes to determine if a faced product is needed in your area. If needed, the facing would face down. Thank you for your inquiry!

Perfect replacement for wet insulation
I have a building I'm working on that had a roof leak and caused the insulation to get saturated. I needed to replace the damaged pieces and have always used Owens Corning insulation. All I needed was 4 sections and I used a slap stapler to attach to the studs. If your project is big or small good quality high r value insulation is worth every penny. Go and grab what Owens Corning insulation you need for your project you won't be disappointed.

Junk - You won't get R38 out of this
The batts do not expand to the listed 12.5". If you try to fluff it up manually, the batts falls apart at a seam. The seem appears to be where the manufacturer attempted to glue two 6" batts together to make a 12"batt. This makes it almost impossible get the required R38 overhead cause you're not getting the full 12".
If getting the R value is important, spend a little bit more money to get another brand. I had no problems with another, non-pink, brand.

I wasn't home when these were delivered but many of the bags of insulation were cut in many different areas instead of only having one side open. I've used three of the right bags for part of my insulation project. Great quality insulation just wish I could've bought these separately. Home Depot does allow to have left over bags returned so I'll be using the rest of the bags on the other side of my house. I'll remove all the old insulation and put these down. I don't have a truck to return them, just have to be very careful when doing the other side of my house!

The house we purchased only had about 3 inches of insulation, and our summer electric bill was about $400/mo. Upon install, we noticed an immediate difference in the indoor temperature and how often the AC unit was turning on. Now, with colder weather kicking in, the house sits at 74 with the outdoor temp at 47, and the heater rarely turns on. Our bill this past month was $114 vs the $189 it was when we moved in. Given that we bought this as a Special Buy of the Day, we got it at 40% off and this will pay for itself in about a year. We broke down blown insulation bundles to fill the voids in the existing insulation (up to rafters), faced to cover the parts where there was no existing insulation and unfaced to top it all off. This insulation quality and packaging is excellent. The plastic wrapping is though enough to withstand the tugging/pulling of just getting it where it needs to be without tearing. Once the bundle is cut open, it expands to full dept quickly. If, like me, you're doing the install yourself, make sure to have a helper because each bundle is fairly heavy and bulky for one person to safely get up into the attic. I'd also recommend the ($10) Grip-Rite Stone Wool Insulation Knife because it cut through this insulation like butter and was priceless for this job.

Bought this to use in the flat part of the ceiling in an attic I was finishing. It worked as expected and I didn't have any issues with packaging or shipping. I find the pink stuff to be softer to the touch than some other brands, but it's slightly harder to cut than some since the kraft facing isn't very stiff, but it's not usually a problem.

The batts are a good length to handle. They work great in 10 in rafters. The relaxed thickness is 8 inches or so and they provide r-38 plus whatever products on roof. The kraft facing is stronger than most other manufacturers. You could feel the heat that was no longer escaping.
