Hello KC, if you are looking only for acoustical benefits this product would be acceptable to use. If you are also looking for thermal insulation the Fire and Sound Guard does not have a R-value assigned to it and we would recommend the use of Thermafiber UltraBatt. Thank you for your inquiry!

Yes. I believe it will shed over time as you described. Just a thought - you could possibly cover the insulation with a heavier mill clear plastic sheeting to seal in the particles rather than sheet the ceiling with sheet rock.

Hello AChan, insulation can be layered in an attic application. While adding thicker insulation in a larger cavity can add additional noise control after about 6” of insulation it starts to become a diminishing return and the human ear typically cannot pick up the difference.

If looking to install into metal studs you would want to ensure your get a products that is either 16" wide for 16" oc studs or 24" wide for 24" oc studs. Thank you for your inquiry!

how does this compare to faced R-30 for basement ceiling in terms of sounds proofing?

Asked by Kyle September 28, 2020

Answers

Hello Kyle, As stated by NAIMA (North American Insulation Manufacturers Association) density of insulation does not affect STC ratings of an assembly. Typically, assemblies with mineral wool or glass fiber insulation will have the same or similar STC’s, despite the fact that mineral wool is a denser product. If you have the same thickness of both products you will get similar acoustical results. Thank you for your inquiry!

Does the formaldehyde dissipate over time? How long in open space would it take?

Asked by STEPHEN September 17, 2020

Answers

Hello BushytopS, Formaldehyde emissions from Thermafiber products using a phenol-urea-formaldehyde binder are very low to begin with. The remaining formaldehyde will dissipate with time. The rate of decay (dissipation) will depend on the environmental conditions, mainly temperature, humidity, and air change rate. Placing the material in an open space would allow more rapid dissipation of emissions. Thank you for your inquiry!

What is the STC rating

You can send the below information depending on wall or ceiling application to answers.insulation@owenscorning.com and we can provide STC information for the assembly. Wall Assembly: Construction Type: Single Stud, Double Stud, Staggered Stud Stud Type: Wood, Metal Stud Size: 2x4, 2x6 etc. Stud Spacing: 16” or 24” oc Insulation in wall: R-value or thickness Resilient Channels: Yes or No Drywall Thickness and number of layers Floor/Ceiling Assembly: Finished Floor Material Sub Floor Material and thickness Joist Type: Wood, I-Joist, Wood Truss, Steel Joist Joist Size: Joist Spacing: Insulation in ceiling: R-value or thickness Resilient Channels: Yes or No Finished Ceiling Material Thank you for your inquiry!

Fairly easy to install. Tears easy enough, but what a difference. I installed in the ceiling of my basement office to try to cut down on the noise from the kitchen above. I would say it cut out 30% of the noise level. Going to add another layer to see much more I can improve it.

full of tiny metal beads
Easy enough to cut and install in walls. BUT be careful of tiny metal beads/particles that are all throughout the insulation if you’re working around anything important, like say a new porcelain tub...also it’s very itchy; not as bad as fiberglass insulation but still bad enough to irritate skin, nose, eyes.

I have no complaints about this product. It works! Recently installed this in a basement ceiling and its great! Renovated a bedroom in the basement and it helps with keeping out the people talking above the room. I love it.

The quality was very disappointing for the price point. The very first bag I opened had Chunks of rocks falling out of the batting. Crumbling product. Was supposed to be 3 inches seemed like only 2 and half at most. Felt cheated.

Excellent sound insulation, easy to put up. I expected rock wool to not be itchy but this is, not nearly as bad as fiberglass though. I recommend a dust mask in the area of cutting and installation. I cut it with an old electric knife, very easy. Construction was targeted at STC-50, looks like I will easily get STC-70. Project used 4 pallets of this product.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
Time to get the basement ceiling joists insulated to keep everyone comfortable on the main and 2nd floors. I requested this insulation to install a second layer of insulation between the basement ceiling joists. I had already installed fiberglass insulation (acquired through the Home Depot Seeds reviewer program just like for this product), but the dogs still seemed to wake up our child with her playpen in the first floor livingroom and the dogs directly below her. This insulation you can tell just by lifting a bag of it is much denser than fiberglass insulation, and when you open the bag, you'll notice that this mineral wool insulation is more like the consistency of a dense cake. Installing it is actually pretty easy as long as the individual batts are trimmed to fit the spot they are going into (cut out spots for electrical boxes or any other large obstructions). All you do is lift the batt, angle one long side in final position to the joist/stud and then compress other long side of batt up into the joist/stud bay. No need for anything to hold it up since this stuff won't compress a whole lot. If you do need to cut it to be more narrow, give it no more than 1/4" for friction fitting. Any more than that and you'll never be able to get it in the space.

(What's this)
This Stuff Is A SOUND SPONGE !!!! Wow ,, very impressive insulation/sound killer,,, Its like a sponge for sound, Soaks in all the noise then keeps it there,, I insulated 3 rooms in my basement, The boiler room, a future home theater and a future 1/2 bath... I love it for the boiler room as it provides protection from fire, and since I put it in, I can no longer hear the boiler running from the upstairs living room which is right over it,,, It Fits snugly in between the beams and there is no need for wires to hold it in place. You can see in the pics below I have it installed in the 2 x 3 walls and in the 2 x 10 ceiling joists as well, I ended up doubling it in the ceiling because I had enough and wanted to cut any noise from the home theater. With all the insulation in not only is the room warmer, but the sound deadening qualities are amazing,,, I can yell from the theater room and my wife cant hear me from the other side of the basement.. I am very impressed with the fire safe qualities, you can see in my video below I torch it really good and it barely smolders and seems to self extinguish making me feel very safe as the basement is the last place I want to be trapped in a fire.. It insulates, Makes it quiet and keeps you safe, a great product at a great price and its hardly itchy... Cuts easily with a corrugated knife and installs easily
