The likely reason why mineral wool intended for sound/fire dampening is supposedly much heavier and much more densely packed than mineral wool intended for insulation. Compare the weights yourself, as I haven't visited this issue until recently again. Shrugs as to why the manufactures refuse to add an R/insulative value. Think they merrily assume nobody in their right mind would use the stuff for insulation?

Each bag contains 10 batts. Each batt covers 4’ x 16”. That’s enough material to go in between five 16” wall spaces if you have regular 8’ ceilings. That equals about 6.5 linear feet of wall, or about 52 square feet of wall per bag.

Unless it's inside a cavity or sealed in plastic or something, I would not. It's very easy to break apart and the fibers go all over.

It is not designed for that, use the Ultra Batt R15 for exterior walls. I use plastic for a vapor barrier on the exterior walls. I was able to test the fire; roxul on the left and thermafiber on the right, reacted about the same

This is a fibrous material shaped like fiberglass insulation. The similarity ends there people. Its more like dry sheet cake. I bought a cheap bread knife to cut it. Works better than a razor by far. We used this in new construction walls where bedroom walls were next to living spaces.

Fairly easy to install. Tears easy enough, but what a difference. I installed in the ceiling of my basement office to try to cut down on the noise from the kitchen above. I would say it cut out 30% of the noise level. Going to add another layer to see much more I can improve it.

full of tiny metal beads
Easy enough to cut and install in walls. BUT be careful of tiny metal beads/particles that are all throughout the insulation if you’re working around anything important, like say a new porcelain tub...also it’s very itchy; not as bad as fiberglass insulation but still bad enough to irritate skin, nose, eyes.

It Just WORKS
I have no complaints about this product. It works! Recently installed this in a basement ceiling and its great! Renovated a bedroom in the basement and it helps with keeping out the people talking above the room. I love it.

The quality was very disappointing for the price point. The very first bag I opened had Chunks of rocks falling out of the batting. Crumbling product. Was supposed to be 3 inches seemed like only 2 and half at most. Felt cheated.

Excellent sound insulation, easy to put up. I expected rock wool to not be itchy but this is, not nearly as bad as fiberglass though. I recommend a dust mask in the area of cutting and installation. I cut it with an old electric knife, very easy. Construction was targeted at STC-50, looks like I will easily get STC-70. Project used 4 pallets of this product.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
Time to get the basement ceiling joists insulated to keep everyone comfortable on the main and 2nd floors. I requested this insulation to install a second layer of insulation between the basement ceiling joists. I had already installed fiberglass insulation (acquired through the Home Depot Seeds reviewer program just like for this product), but the dogs still seemed to wake up our child with her playpen in the first floor livingroom and the dogs directly below her. This insulation you can tell just by lifting a bag of it is much denser than fiberglass insulation, and when you open the bag, you'll notice that this mineral wool insulation is more like the consistency of a dense cake. Installing it is actually pretty easy as long as the individual batts are trimmed to fit the spot they are going into (cut out spots for electrical boxes or any other large obstructions). All you do is lift the batt, angle one long side in final position to the joist/stud and then compress other long side of batt up into the joist/stud bay. No need for anything to hold it up since this stuff won't compress a whole lot. If you do need to cut it to be more narrow, give it no more than 1/4" for friction fitting. Any more than that and you'll never be able to get it in the space.
