Can this be lifted out of the vessel by hand, or do you need the piece that goes on the faucet, also?
Asked by: NotHandy
There is no connection to the faucet as this has no stopper function. Typically a bowl sink has no overflow, so code does not allow for a drain that can be closed. For a bowl sink, this has all four pieces you will require for the job, other than tools to loosen and tighten the two connections. I found that large channel lock pliers worked the best out of many tools at my disposal. However, if the old nut is corroded, a large monkey wrench might be needed to hold the pipe as you turn the nut. On the installation, you won't need to make it tight enough to need more than your bare hand to hold the pipe. Once freed of both nuts, it will just lift out--perhaps with a twist--and install in the reverse order of these steps. Be sure to clean the opening under the cap (some of sink might be exposed that was under old cap) and use a small ring of hand-kneeded plumbers putty under the drain cap--twisting and pushing until it oozes out all around, then clean off excess at the end.

Be aware that the pipe has fewer threads than I expected (or had on the drain it replaced) and the rubber ring uses up quite a few threads before it is compressed, so I was just barely able to reach the threaded section with the plastic nut (a foolish design decision by the maker). The bottom view shows only 2 "extra" threads when fully installed, making it hard to get the nut to catch. Don't throw away the old nut until you are sure it will work, as mine was threaded closer to the top inner edge and would have more readily bit on the threads than the one provided. Installation instructions were lacking, so don't forget to put a small ring of plumbers putty (warmed with your fingers as you kneed it into a "snake") under the drain cap, since the rubber seal ring goes under the sink and it is best to avoid that stagnant pool of water. You'll know you have the right amount when you get a tiny bit of ooze all around that you then just wipe away. This also serves as an additional indication you have it tight enough. I was pleased to see that the visible portion was slightly thinner and smaller in diameter (see top view), allowing it to recess just a tiny bit into the bowl--a problem with my old one that prevented draining the last few drops out of the bowl.
