Questions & Answers

What size screw and type that should be used to attach it to the wall. I've lost mine?

Asked by: Johnny
Hi Johnny, The install directions are on the product page, Home Depot Online. It is the same instructions/assembly guide that comes with the rack.

What's the purpose of the spacers and can they be disregarded? I would think that if it was screwed to the wall without spacers it would be much more stable.
Asked by: Woody
The spacers are essential- the horizontal pieces are laser cut, so the vertical member can pass through them. There is a tail on the end of the horizontals that stick out against the wall. The spacer keeps the tails off the wall. I tried it both ways...use the spacers, they make the rack work correctly.

Portamate Wood Storage Organizer Rack arrived well packed and with all parts intact. The directions were good, pictures, and written word. I installed my rack on a concrete block wall. My measurements were 8ft w x 8ft ht. I wanted a 24" overhang on each end. I wanted 4 ft of storage below the rack for 4ft wide sheet goods, and lattice panels. I measured 12" down from the ceiling, and 24" from the corner. Once I determined level I installed the first vertical bar. Again, I measured 12" down from the ceiling, and 24" in from the window. Once I determined level I installed the second vertical bar. I followed the install directions for masonry walls diligently since each level holds 110#. I'm amazed that such small screws hold this kind of weight on the horizontals, but it works. I gained a couple of feet of floor space once I put the wood on the wall rack versus stacked, and leaning against the wall. The rack is very well made. This is a great value for the price. I plan on purchasing another rack for my weed eater, pole saw, and blower storage, and/or a shelving unit.

I liked it enough to place a second order a few days ago for another. Get a lot of lumber up out of the floor. Makes much more room available in my basement.

When I bought these I had the intention of cutting the verticals in half to fit in the 2 feet of space I have for the rack. I did just that and drilled all of the holes that were needed to make it usable again (anchor and stop holes). While I did have my trepidations about the arm strength, and the screw stop, they seem to be working as advertised. (I really don't like the way they designed the arm stops using a little screw and a small half round cut out on the bottom of the arm. Seems way too flimsy to me).Since I now have 4 half racks instead of the initial 2, and my longest boards are only 10' long, they seem to be more than capable of supporting the thick hardwood stock that's on them now. They were originally rated at 110 lbs. per shelf but now that I have them 2 feet 8" apart and there's 4 of them I'm hoping that that'll at least double the capable load. I've only put on two rows of the horizontal arms (instead of the originally intended 5) for two shelves, time will tell!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks good, works great so far I finally got a few minutes and was able to install this wood rack in my shop. It was easy to install with three screws (not provided) into the studs in my wall. I put it up high enough that it didn't interfere with my tool box or my work space. Assembling the rack was easy, and with a few small screws (provided) the horizontal bars slid right on. I spaced the two vertical bars 6 feet apart, which was recommended. I used two levels to make sure that the verticals were level, and that they were level with each other. There is a plastic spacer that goes behind each screw that goes into the stud. When I opened the package, one of my spacers was crushed. Rather than wait for a replacement, I made one out of scrap wood that I had in the shop. It didn't set me back anything, and it is probably stronger than the plastic one included with the set. I loaded a couple of boards on the rack, and it works perfectly. I think it would be hard to screw up something like this. I will probably get another one and space it closer for shorter boards. Good rack, easy to assemble, looks good and feel solid. Way better than the old rack I built out of scrap wood, at least the wife thinks that anyways.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from From Messy to Organized in One Afternoon! We had unfinished attic space just begging to be organized- it had become the storage locker for leftover lumber and parts after a major home renovation. I hate having stuff piled on the floor, so this was a PERFECT solution....and NOT just for wood storage...consider off-season sports equipment, tools, and yard implements. Handy suggestion in the owners’ manual: Any of the levels are easily converted to shelves for storing shorter pieces and, by adding an upward lip to the shelf, prevent roll-off of round stock material. If you mount the rack higher up, the bottom rack can be converted to a shelf and customized with hooks to hang and organize power cords and tools below. If it's a garage wall, you can mount it higher up and out of the way. This product is accompanied by excellent assembly instructions. There’s both step-by-step written and diagrammatic instructions. Assembly is simple and, with a cordless screwdriver, we were ready to mount in less than 30 minutes. Figuring out where to install the vertical rails to provide solid structural support was the harder part. The vertical bars are 39” tall, the horizontal “shelf” bars are 12.25” deep. The manufacturer recommends spacing of 4 to 6 ft between vertical bars with a capacity of 110 lb per level. For longer materials or greater weight, multiple wood racks are recommended For our application, we had a short wall and decided to rest the bottom of vertical members on the floor to provide additional support. All parts are provided with one exception- which interrupted our work for an unplanned trip to Home Depot- six (6) wall fasteners. The assembled wood rack is 1-5/8”deep, so 2-3/4” is a suitable length for a fastener to clear the tubing and spacer. We used 3” wood screws to attach to exposed studs (lag bolts would work too). The manual recommends fastener types and sizes for masonry walls, steel sheds, and wood fences, but recommends structural reinforcement for the latter two applications.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Rack! I am an avid woodworker. I bought two of these and will be buying two more. Previous to this I made a rack out of pipe fittings and lumber and it actually cost more. They are very sturdy and easy to assemble. I could not be happier with this product. - 5 stars!!!
