The directions say to sand the wood with 80 grit after cleaning with TSP & bleach. it also says to scrub for 20 minutes to remove mill gloss. I assume that is not 20 minutes for each spot on the deck. That would seem to disqualify this as "easy to apply." Is the sanding necessary on new 1 inch cedar decking?
Asked by: greyghost
I'm not a professional painter. For new decking I would not sand. Sanding is used for adhesion when staining over a stain. I pressure washed with a product I bought from a company in WI. I needed to let the wood dry (at least 24 hours). Let me caution you on using the product on decking. The product creates a film over top of the wood. Water will make the product slippery. Also, I spoke to a professional deck cleaning and staining and he told me that once Sikkens is applied, I would not be able to change to a different stain product. The film that is created must be removed by sanding or corn husk blasting.

I'm purchasing a cedar swingset that will be often sprayed by the lawn sprinkler system. I wanted to provided it with addtl protection by using the Sikkens Cedar Cetol SRD finish. Can I apply it to the already stained cedar from the factory as a secondary coating of protection?
Asked by: MBell
I’m really not sure. I would think that, with factory applied stain, it would be okay, but I just looked at the can and it said that all previous finishes should be removed before applying. So I suppose that it would depend on how well and deep the factory-applied stain was. It also says that any wood with factory applied decay protection should be left to weather for at least a year before applying. To play it safe you might try contacting the company first. Or, take a gamble. (I applied two costs on untreated cedar but I left it weather for a year first and it seems to be holding up so far, one year later.)

Prepping 5 year old SRD??, How should one stir/ shake/ prep unopened old gallons is Sikkens Cetol SRD? Thanks

Asked by: MinnBobber
I would shake the can for a few minutes to get sediments that have settled off the bottom. I would also still stir the can too. Hopefully the stain hasn’t broken down over the years. I always store mine indoors so it doesn’t freeze over the winter. I hope this helps
