Questions & Answers

Having a color problem

I bought the sample of the american chestnut applied it to 2 different test boards color was perfect. Went an bought 4 gallons and color is completly different. The sample seems to be more of a lighter transperent and the gallon seems to be more of a solid. Asked 3 employees no one can tell me whats going on. The brochure has 2 different types of american chestnut semi solid tss-50 amd semi transperent tst-50 .but when you look it up on home depot website they only show one. The sample can seems to be the semi transperent an the gallon seems to be the semi solid. I need to get my deck stain for a party next week an i dont know what to do.

I found two issues with PPG Timeless. First, you HAVE TO SHAKE IT. The dye seems to settle onto the bottom. If you don't have Home Depot shake the can vigorously, the stain will be lighter on top and darker at the bottom of the can. Secondly, I used American Chestnut Semi-Transparent/Semi-Solid on my 11 year old deck, and it stained the boards a deep chocolate brown ... nothing like the color suggested on the can label. I think it is false advertising on the part of PPG. Few people want medium to dark brown boards. We all like that rich medium to light brown color, and that is not what this color produces on older wood.

I'm thinking of applying this product on new (dried out 3 months) pressure treated deck on Nantucket Island MA. Would transparent for 1st time use be correct ? (More penetration?) Also, how many coats would be required? I do plan to use deck cleaner first.
Asked by: Richard
Richard, ensure the wood had dried out or the stain will not penetrate. As for the transparency that is a personal choice. Do you want the wood grain to show through, then go with the transparent, if you want more color and it to show less grain choose semi-solid. The wonderful aspect of this product is it only requires ONE coat. Obviously, you will have spots that need to be touched up. Good luck!

Can this be applied over an existing old polyurethane finish? Gate is raw pine boards with a sloppy coat of polyurethane. Want to stain OVER the old finish.
Asked by: jw
No! You need to pressure wash old surface & remove old finish. My 14' X 16' deck only took 2 hours to remove older finish.

1 gal. TST-50 American Chestnut Semi-Transparent Penetrating Oil Exterior Wood Stain is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice results I really like this stain. I wasn't sure what semi-transparent/semi-solid meant but I would say that after applying two fairly heavy coats, it is more of a solid stain. I recently replaced my outside deck stairs and porch stairs. After leaving the pressure treated wood exposed for several months to dry out, I applied 2 coats of this stain. The results were very nice. You can still see some of the grain of the wood. Water beads up on it after rain, which does not happen on the rest of the porch. I intend to apply this on the rest of the porch, which is already stained. I will write another review to let you know how it works.

First off, Home Depot is not to blame for my complaint with PPG Timeless American Chestnut. My issue is with PPG. The main problem is color. Look at the color of the boards on the can label for American Chestnut in this ad. I don't know where they got those boards, or what type of wood it is, but I can attest that the actual stain is NOT that color. It is MUCH darker. When you shake and open the can, the stain is a deep dark chocolate brown. I applied it to my older 11 year old deck of pressure-treated wood. I had stripped the boards of all prior stain and they came out looking great, almost brand new. When I applied American Chestnut, however, the boards turned deep brown, not anywhere like the color on the can. Click on the photo of my stained deck posted below and check out the color. Secondly, this is not like the old oil-based stains of old. This product is water based. When I applied it with a roller, it immediately sank into the wood and the stain/dye stained the wood differently, inch by inch. It was necessary to roll over the wet area again and again to spread the stain, otherwise, some areas became very dark and others lighter. Even with lots of effort, I still got uneven staining (look at the photo). Thirdly, the stain is so dark that there was no way I could apply a 2nd coat. I tried it and the boards turned almost black. I had to wipe it off again. Because I could apply only one thin coat, I don't know how water-repellent the product will be. I fear that the deck will begin to mildew quickly, since the boards really do not have much protection. I guess the product would be OK if the color was not so dark, and I could apply two good coats. I consider it false advertising to put that photo on the can label, when that is NOT what the product looks like. If you choose this product, make sure you buy the small sample can of American Chestnut, and apply it to a small piece of your actual wood surface, particularly if it is aged wood. You will get darker wood. If that is fine with you, OK. If not, either choose a lighter color of Timeless stain, or shop for a different brand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Timer I will start off by saying I have never stained or painted anything in my life, so I was very nervous and unsure of myself. Thankfully, the PPG Timeless Stain was an exceptional product to work with. I was surprised by how smooth the stain looked after only a couple passes of the roller. The wood was instantly transformed! The stain was easy to work with and forgiving in a couple of areas where I made a mistake. The dry time was also pretty fast on a sunny 85 degree day. My fence and shed have never looked better and I'm so proud to say I did it all myself with the help of PPG Stain. I would recommend this product to anyone. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stain Experiment I was very interested to see how this would work, as I have not really worked with stain before. When I opened the first can, I thought it looked much darker than the color I selected. I wasn't too worried, since stain is different from paint and goes on much thinner. My First Project was a fence between the houses, that was unfinished wood on my side. The stain went on easy, and the rougher surface soaked it right up. I was right, the color applied much lighter than it looked in the can, andI was very happy how it looked on the wood. Applying onto the bare wood, i used 3-4 coats to get a nice finish. That seems alot, but the stain covers a large area, and applies fast. I think the finished fence looks great. The wood has ab "alive" look to it, and the natural grain and color shows through in just the right balance to the stain tint. I took a few pics of the fence, one shows well the old and new look as I worked. MY Second Project was interior. This was exterior stain, but I was sent four gallons, so I was looking around for more places to try! I decided on a wood closet. it had a varnish finish, but was really old, and lots of scratches, dents, and even thumbtack holes. I had to be careful applying stain, since on this surface it didn't soak in much, and I had to avoid runs and splotches. I got better as I went. I had no idea how this would work, but the change was amazing. The wood has a like new gloss, and a richer color. Its darker, but looks good. The stain also took out out the scratches and chips, covering them to match. I was like, "wow." The thumbtack holes filled in some, but are way less noticeable. I might try this on other old doors inside too. I took a pic with one door done and one not as I worked. I used brushes on both projects. Clean-up was very easy, just soap and water to rinse out my brushes. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Looks great, and I had to replace some boards before the stain job, and because it's semi-solid, you can't tell any color differentiation. I had to power wash the fence before the stain, just to try to get it in the best shape it could be in before the stain. Tried applying only with a brush, which I soon found out caused it to be very inconsistent looking. So, switched to spraying it on first, and then brushing it out to even it, and it looked wonderful that way. I heard that this product has a lifetime warranty from PPG, but not all the Home Depot people told me about that (in fact, it was the 3rd person that I spoke to about this before I heard about the warranty). I haven't explored yet what the warranty is, but I found it interesting that this product has one. We used the mahogany color, and we're thrilled with it.
