WILL MISS VIOLET GROW IN ZERO DEGREE TEMP?

Asked by KELLY May 7, 2018

Answers

It won't 'GROW' during the winter, but if you prune it well it will return in the spring. I recently lost a 24 year old Miss Violet that had been transplanted twice after we moved cross country and then into a new home many years ago.

Is this a shade plant or can it survive in afternoon sun?

I have mine planted along an east fence which gets sun in the late morning and afternoon.

How much water does this plant need?

I watered it three times a week during the hottest part of the summer for about fifteen minutes on a sprinkler system

I live in kentucky and mine looks dead when do they bloom cause its seems kinda late

First, are they in full sun? Do you water when needed? Are they in good soil? Be sure to dead head to promote new blooms. April is not 'late' for Butterfly Bushes. Mine are just now blooming and it's almost June.

They attract Butterflies and Hummingbirds, etc. but I have 4 and have not seen any Cabbage Moths. BTW.... My Rose of Sharon trees tend to have pests so I spray them with a mixture of dish soap and water and the pests are gone overnight and don't return that season.

November through April the bush is dormant. You can only order it online now. Depending on where you live, you might want to wait until the soil warms to plant your butterfly bush.

Is there a specific way this bush can be or should be planted in August?

Make sure you water it so that it has a chance to take root and not dry out. Do not cut back until the spring.

Will the plant survive in temperature 20-30 degrees during the winter.

I have had good luck with these surviving the past several winters. Though you absolutely must cut them back to almost ground level in early/mid-Spring so the can send up their new shoots. All of the growth from the previous year will do nothing - it's dead. Also, the like a lot of water and sunshine.

I've planted these with Miracle-Gro all purpose in ground garden soil, kept them watered and we'v...

No. This is not normal. Are they in full sun? Yellow could be too much water or not enough water. Check your soil PH.

Says the fragrance is strong, can you describe the scent so there won't be any unpleasant surprises?

I don't consider the fragrance strong at all. I have 4 around the yard and have found it's got much less fragrance than Honeysuckle or my Oak Leaf Hydrangea.

MAJOR Disappointment
The image shows you what I saw on the website v/s what actually arrived in the mail. Enough said. The only disappointment was that I could not rate it a ZERO. To be fair, Home Depot has a GREAT selection in stores but their online plants are TERRIBLE. Plant arrived mostly dead and leaves falling off. Looks NOTHING like the pic on the left or what you would get in the store. I will be planting it but I have no expectation of it looking like what it does in the pictures shown on the website. Very disappointed by both, Proven Winners AND by Home Depot.

This is an easy and deer\rabbit resistant plant. It will quickly grow and deliver vibrant purple blossoms. I squeezed in between a rose and another perennial with no issues. It does seem to thrive in brighter light and wet soil. I have another on the north side of the house and it is not doing as well as south sun facing. It is disease resistant compared to the plants on either side of it. Nice quick easy and cheap plant to bring color to your home.

Miss Violet Butterfly Bush is an excellent addition to any yard especially if you want to add vibrant purple color to your landscape. This plant also keeps deer away from your landscaping, its a deer repellent plant. I don't have deer where I live but that's not why I picked this bush. I picked it because of the vibrant purple flowers the bush has. I received this Violet Butterfly Bush in healthy condition with plenty of violet purple flowers. The packaging was great and no loss of dirt. I planted the violet butterfly bush right away and the bush has taken to the dirt and is thriving. I am very satisfied with this bush and definitely recommend this vibrant purple bush.

(What's this)
This Miss Violet Butterfly Shrub is a very attractive plant when healthy. We already have the Miss Molly Butterfly Shrub which is very similar but with pinkish/purple flowers and it's been doing great for almost 1 year now. When we received this plant it looked nice and healthy. But then after leaving it outside for 2 rainy days it died and apparently this was due to the plastic wrap that did not allow the pot to drain. So basically it couldn't tolerate the amount of water in the pot/soil. I immediately removed the plastic wrap and drained the water but it hasn't recovered after a week. I love this plant when healthy but I had to knock off one star for it's sensitivity and another star for shipping this plant with a plastic wrap without adding a note about the need to remove this wrap immediately upon receipt!

(What's this)
When the box arrived, I had high expectations. Upon opening the box, which had no visible damage, I was looking down into the tall box to the near bottom and saw the very sad looking plant. It was broken up pretty bad, dried out, and just a mess. I've received other things from this supplier and this was the first serious disappointment. It shipped on the 16th and was delivered on the 21st, leaving a long period of time probably sitting in a hot delivery truck, warehouse, etc. The base is heavy like it is filled with water, but the plant is obviously dry, and you can see how busted up it is. Hoping for better luck next time. As I said, this supplier had provided great products, with awesome packing, and came in perfect shape.

Such a pretty shrub! Once it arrived, it already looked well-grown. Plopped in the ground and watered it good. I have to say it was packaged and shipped well, out of the box looked in great condition. I'm looking forward to seeing hummingbirds, maybe some butterflies come by to visit this Miss Violet. What I really like about this shrub is it lasts year round. Yes it will be dormant November to March, but it will come back. Great shrub.
