Is it ok planted in partial shade/east exposure? I planted it 3 weeks ago & the bottom leaves turned yellow & died.

Answer

Hi fannyann, The Lemony Lace Elderberry requires at least four or more direct hours of sunlight per day. Please call our hotline (734) 654- 7485. We will be happy to give you growing tips and advice for your plant's care. Best regards, Fallon

Can you prune this bush back every year if you want to keep it smaller?

Asked by Utahgirl May 17, 2017

Answer

Hi Utahgirl, you can prune this shrub back every year. It actually does benefit from some hard pruning as a young plant to help develop a nice and full habit. However, we do recommend trimming older plants after flowering. Pruning in the spring will reduce the flower production. If you have any additional questions, feel free to give us a call at (734) 654-7485. Thanks! Hailee

I want to make elderflower syrup and maybe tea. Are these flowers safe to eat? Or do I need to keep looking?

Asked by Dimitri March 27, 2017
1
Answer

Hi Dimitri, The USDA Department of Agriculture states that only the blue or purple berries of Elderberry are edible, however, all other parts of the Elderberry including the red berries of other species are toxic and should not be gathered (Lemony Lace has red berries). The active alkaloids in elderberry plants are hydrocyanic acid and sambucine. Both alkaloids will cause nausea so care should be observed with this plant. Please consult a reliable source on how to safely make Elderberry syrup. If you have any questions, please call our hotline (734) 654- 7485. Best regards, Fallon

Are the berries edible? This is an elderberry, right?

Asked by citausnchild September 28, 2015

Answer

Dear citausnchild, Thank you for asking about our Lemony Lace™ Sambucus. The red fall fruit makes it a good addition to wildlife gardens, however, I would suggest reviewing the list of poisonous plants made available by the ASPCA on their website as a good point of reference to answer your question. Ordered 2x 1 gallon size and both plants were shipped on a Monday and arrived Wednesday afternoon. It's mid-July and we were in a total heat wave - so obviously plants arrived a little stressed. They were well packaged and both plants bounced back beautifully after being planted in rich soil (with lots of organic material) and lots of water! Love sambucus and was so happy to find on HD website!

Lemon Lace Sambucus - 1 gal. Shrub
Lemony Lace™ is a hardy plant for zones 3-7. I live in Zone 7 so I am hoping it doesn’t be too hot for this species because it is a lovely plant. The golden laced leaves are visually stunning. This plant will have white flowers in the spring that produce red un-edible red fruit in the fall. The plant will be dormant in late fall until spring. The plant will spread 36” to 60” so it will be a great asset to my growing garden. This plant is sold online and arrives in protected vented packaging. It arrived very healthy is ready for planting. Suggested treatments for this species will be to continue the Proven Winners fertilizers and irrigate with WaterWise kit.
