Will these grow in Southern California? And are they good cut flowers?

Asked by SonomaGardens September 22, 2020
2
Answers

I’ve seen them in gardens in Georgia and Florida and they grow for me in Oregon so SoCal should be OK. Beauty berry sprigs make lovely additions to arrangements in the fall. These are not technically the flowers that are the display but the berries when there is very little else of color in the garden.

I know, Pearl Glams thrive best in sun, but can they still survive in shade?

Are the Berry's on this bush ok for kids to be around or possibly eat?

Asked by Shopper May 2, 2020

Answers

Hi Berries, Eating beautyberry berries is not recommended. I have read that it tastes "medicinal." I can find no resource that says it is toxic, but that does not mean that it is good for human consumption. To be sure, please contact poison control. Beautyberry berries are best left for birds to eat when they are ripe in September/October. Beautyberry has also been reported to help repel mosquitoes. If you have any further questions, please contact us at 734-654-7485 or helpdesk@provenwinnersdirect.com. Best regards, Fallon

How well does it grow in a parking lot ?

Asked by Joe April 3, 2018
1
Answer

Hi Joe, Pearl Glam Beautyberry requires full sun (about 6-8 hours per day) and has a mature size of 48 - 60 inches tall and 36 - 48 inches wide. If it is in the right environment and receives proper care, then it should do well. If you have any other questions, feel free to call our hotline (734) 654-7485. Best regards, Amanda.

How much summer heat can this plant tolerate? We can have 3-4 weeks above 100 degrees and dry. ...

Asked by fancyplants November 30, 2017
1
Answer

Hi fancyplants, The Pearl Glam Beautyberry is hardy in zones 5-8. It is not considered heat or drought tolerant. It would likely tolerate a few 100 degree days at a time, but might suffer stress from weeks of 100 degree weather with little water, especially as it tries to establish during its first season. For best results, look for plants that are hardy in your zone and labeled heat and drought tolerant, like our Infinitini Crapemyrtle series. If you have any questions, please call our hotline (734) 654- 7485. Best regards, Fallon

When the shrubs are planted (south Miami-Dade County, Fl.), how long before berries appear?

Asked by Beverly October 8, 2017

Is this a hybrid of our native Callicarpa (Beautyberry) or from the non-native species to the USA?

Asked by DonnaR August 14, 2017
1
Answer

Hi DonnaR, The Pearl Glam Beautyberry is an advanced hybrid between Callicarpa dichotoma and C. kwangtungensis. It gets its upright form and purple-tinged foliage from C. kwangtungensis and early, prolific showy fruit from C. dichotoma. In the fall it has glamorous bright violet pearls adorning dark purple foliage. If you have any questions, please call our hotline (734) 654- 7485. Best regards, Fallon

Will this plant retain it's foliage year round in deep south Georgia?

Asked by Cs August 2, 2017

I tried out ordering a plant for the convenience, but it was small and looks completely dead. May well be dormant so I planted it and will watch for spring growth but could’ve bought the same plant 3x bigger and full of leaves and berries from the local nursery for $5 more.
