Q:My Paperwhites came up a month ago and now have 4-5 inch green stems, it is going to freeze and I need to know what to do with them?

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi GMae, I'm Travis from The Home Depot. Thanks for visiting our site. You did the right thing when you dug up your paperwhites to save them from the cold. They will not survive freezing temperatures. Paperwhites, or 'Narcissus' are cultivated as indoor plants and they generally do not bloom for a second time. Flowering bulbs will attempt to regenerate every year if they are in favorable conditions. They send up a leaf to gather energy from the sun to rebuild their bulb. If the conditions are ideal, the bulb will flower from the newly developed bulb. After the flower fades, the foliage will remain, collecting energy from the sun to rebuild the bulb again. Narcissus are not likely to regenerate successfully, so we consider them an annual flower. Jonquils and daffodils are close relatives that perform year, after year. Thank you for asking, -Travis

      Wonderful value
I purchased these bulbs last year and was not sure if they would still grow as they were in my basement (a full year). This spring they came up beautifully. I look forward to many more years of bloom.

        Very Small Bulbs, Few Flowers
The price was good and they arrived quickly, but these were the smallest paperwhite bulbs I've ever seen. Potted them up anyway & leaves sprouted, but they stopped growing at about 8" tall. Then the 24 bulbs produced just five flowers. Hard to return something like this, so I decided to enjoy the few blooms and remind my self not to buy these next year.

worst paperwhite bulbs I have ever purchased
I usually buy bulbs on line from a nursery but this year I thought I'd order from Homedepot.com. Not only were they the smallest bulbs I have ever seen but only two out of nine bulbs bloomed. This year I noticed my local store carried them in stock - big beautiful bulbs at a better price. So much for on line!

        Performed very poorly
I ordered 2 packs totaling 48 bulbs and only 7 bulbs managed to flower, which I would consider very poorly performing bulbs.

        Returned to store
Product arrived in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, they were soft and hollow. Generally when I purchase them locally at my nursery, they have green shoots. Although I was not anticipating green shoots on my Home Depot paperwhites,, I was not expecting ones that would collapse to the touch :( Home Depot was GREAT about the in store return.

Very smal bulbs with corms sprouting from many (an indicator of old bulbs). Only 7 bloomed. I've forced for 40 yrs. Worst.
Very disappointing experience. Small bulbs with sprouting corms from base (old bulb indicator) on many of the bulbs. My first tray (20 bulbs forced) produced 5 measly blooms. Fifteen bulbs did not bloom at all. Similar experience with the next ten bulbs ( total of 2 more blooms). The remaining bulbs are awaiting bloom at this point. To have only gotten 7 blooms is extremely disappointing especially considering the premium price I felt I paid. I've forced paperwhites for 40 years, and never have I had such poor quality bulbs.

        Healthy bulbs
I've been purchasing paperwhites for several years now to give as holiday gifts. I've bought them from various online vendors. The first year they were wonderful. Every year since then, regardless of the vendor, the quality just hasn't been there- to the point where I questioned why I still bought them. I decided to give them one more try. Home Depot had the best deal, so that's where I bought them. They arrived quickly and are the healthiest bulbs I've had since that 1st year.
