Questions & Answers

Can I use as decking?

Asked by: Good
It is not advisable to build wood decks with tongue and groove boards because it traps water in the grooves and will cause the wood to rot prematurely. Exposed wood decks should be built with square edge boards that are spaced at least 1/8th. inch apart to allow for water to drain through and air to circulate to dry out the wood. Dry wood resists mold & fungus growth so your decking, when finished properly, will last years longer.

Could these be used to make shutters for a lake home? (Trailer House). And what are options to stain this for outdoors

Asked by: Vic
Yes. It is recommended to use a good exterior wood stain to stain the boards before building your shutters. Stain one board at a time and do all six surfaces to eliminate water infiltration of the wood. When staining maintain a wet edge to avoid overlap marks and work the stain down into the grooves for best results. If after staining you need to cut a board be sure to stain the raw edges. If you use tongue and groove boards as an exterior cladding (siding) on walls or ceilings it is not necessary to stain prior to installation but it is advisable to at least stain/seal the butt joints however on raw wood this may leave a noticeable overlap mark when finished with transparent or semi-transparent stain in which case staining prior to installation is a good idea.

I have 400 sk,fts.haw many bords i need buy ??

Asked by: Torres
Each 12-foot long board will cover approximately 5.37 sq. ft. divided into 400 sq. ft. equals 74.49 boards. It is recommended to allow for 15% waste which is an additional 11.18 boards. (74.49 + 11.18 = 85.67 boards) Rounding up to the next whole board means you will need +/- 86 boards to cover 400 sq. ft.

Can I use this as flooring?

Asked by: Matt
Yes this could be used as flooring but it is a soft wood so it will dent and scratch much easier than oak or maple and be more prone to cupping & warping. If you use pine as flooring it is best to not use a hard surface finish such as varnish because it is likely the finish will crack on areas of heavy traffic. Instead use a penetrating oil such as tongue-oil. If you like the distressed look you could intentionally dent the wood in the entire area using a heavy chain or other hard objects prior to staining & finishing the floor. Test your method on pieces of scrap wood then stain to make sure it meets your expectations. Be creative, have fun and good luck.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good looking material I purchased these to close off the soffit on the overhang of my new shed. The lumber was actually really nice and I felt bad for painting it because it looked so good but leaving it exposed would not have fit my color scheme. It cut easily without any splinters and nailed up without any splits. I was able to rip it down on my table saw to get the exact width I needed and it ripped fine. I would definitely use this again if I had a similar need in the future.
