It seems odd to me that the SEDIMENT FILTER is to be placed after these 2 tanks. My 1st inclination would be to place the SEDIMENT FILTER 1st to remove all the "BIG" larger 5 micron before it goes into the system, as the "sacrifical filter". Please advise & explain. Thank you

Pellican Water Staff Member: I am getting to install tomorrow - by plumber - not me. I downloaded the instruction from your PELICAN website - the diagram shows the sediment filter to be 1st....yet again - mixed message in the way you present the information. I see that it works both methods: before or after - The question essentially = what is the best way - based on your company testings.

The this work for pond water

Asked by: Mike
In reference to your question dealing with pond water. You are not clear of what kind of pond. The definition of a pond is simply a body of water resembling a size associated with a size people call a pond. Lets assume your asking about a outdoor supplied water source and not a well or city, county, utility provided water source. This would mean a natural occurring body of water not treated with associated bacteria and chemical treatments. If this is a correct assumption; you would be taking a very expensive risk. I'm a retired Civil Engineer who's task was to provide clean potable drinking and bathing water; in all conditions of the water source. You would need a reverse ossmoises to be safe. You are dealing with biological elements; not man made. The Pelican is designed for man made situations. Being that a pond could be "Brackish" or "Salt" or a combination of the two or the worst "Polluted Microscopically". In other words reverse ossmoises is the safe to look at you situation. And besides you will need a pre-filter set up just to start the process. Depending on you demand, Military surplus has equipment designed just for ponds, brackish and salt water. This could be very costly. Try looking at the Army's set ups actually in use now. I wish I could say the Pelican would be the right choice. They are a highly specific design for a normal urban use, limited to some well and country settings. Remember your pond is a world in it's self and your wanting to drink it. i hope this helps. Sorry I ended up returning my system. Couldn't find a plumber in my area who could install it. I'd suggest calling Pelican's 800 #. I spoke to them before purchasing my system and they were very helpful.

I was really looking forward to receiving this system because salt-free and the ability to work without electricity seemed very appealing to me. Unfortunately, I learned first-hand that salt-free 'softening' just does not work. I was still getting hard water spots all over my counters and shower.

I have contacted the supplier and he sez the missing parts are being shipped. Unable to review at this time. After reading past reviews, the biggest complaint would appear to be "MISSING PARTS UPON RECEIPT", something I would expect HomeDepot would be concerned about.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product and service The system is truly amazing and really does make a HUGE difference. Our skin and hair feel much better and softer without the salty slick feeling. Our drinking water is amazing and taste fresh and clean. Putting the system in was some work, but not bad at all. Better price than other big house systems out there. Following the directions is key and customer service was helpful. We called a couple numbers and finally got help at 844-633-3078, which was different than the number in the manual. That was confusing. All in, I recommend this to everyone

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have had this pelican water system for about a month. I hired a plumber to install a loop from ... I have had this pelican water system for about a month. I hired a plumber to install a loop from the water main to the garage, but after that I installed the system myself. Very detailed and straightforward instructions made that easy to do. I had to purchase four 18" stainless steel 1" flex lines and two 1" nipples, as those did not come with the system. This was one of several "Deal of the Day" specials that I have taken advantage of, and I got this system (actually larger than required for my home) for 36% off the list price. The best discount I could get from Pelican was 15%. So that made this larger system less expensive than the one sized for my needs. This one, with the black tanks, actually borders on the commercial side, so I think I got a good deal all around. Water from the tap tastes great. The reduction in scale remains to be seen after only about a month of use, but the plumber told me he has heard good things about Pelican, so I am confident. I also appreciate that there is no salt tank to keep filled, no backwash to waste water, and no electricity required because there are no electrical or moving parts to break down after a few years (had bad experiences with salt systems in that regard). Sediment filter needs to be changed every 4 to 6 months, and carbon needs to be changed every 5 years. The NaturSoft media never needs to be changed ( needed to change ion exchange media after a few years with my previous salt system). The warranty is 5 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well so far My order delivered in 3 days after I bought it. So far it works fine. It removed chlorine and helped hardness. We had an issue when we first hooked up cause we didn't soak the carbon long enough. The tech line was more knowledgable than most and helped us. It took me about 3 hours to install. Not counting trips to Home Depot for pipe and reducers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noticed A difference Immediately We had a water softener before that was salt based and after 12 years it was no longer functioning. We pulled it out and I️ began looking into a replacement. This time around we decided to go with a whole house unit, and right away you could tell a dramatic difference. Sure the water was soft, but the taste and feeling of the water was the big plus. Simply put the water tasted far better, purer in a sense. We also get bottled water delivered and at least from my perspective the water tasted as good. This unit appears to deliver on what it promises. Installation took a while for my plumber, and I️ probably should have purchased the install kit with hoses. Regardless it is up and running and we are pleased with the end result.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great solution for water filtration/softening where salt based softeners are banned. I ... This is a great solution for water filtration/softening where salt based softeners are banned. I found it pretty easy to install and the filtering process leaves the water noticeably softer. We have a well and a septic tank at our home however the local government banned the use of salt-based water softeners as they put too much salt back into the water table which is not helpful to the citrus and avocado farmers who are downstream. As a result we had to remove our salt-based softener a few years ago. There are a couple of features I really liked about this system compared to our old electric water softener: 1) You don’t need to keep buying bags of salt to refill the softener 2) The reverse osmosis water softening process needs no electricity to treat the water as it is ‘always on’ using a chemical process 3) This filter system includes a sediment filter which removes sand from the well water (see pics) Since we wanted to install the filter system on the main incoming water line in our laundry room which is quite small, I was able to install the system in a space measuring 15” deep, 26” wide and 60” high so it takes up about the same amount of room as our old salt-based ‘barrel-style’ softener which is 24” deep, 18” wide and 48” high. In order to make the installation more compact, I purchased some 90 degree 1” MIP threaded PVC elbows so that the flexi hoses that connect the filtration system together would be angled vertically instead of horizontally. Just make sure to use PTFE thread sealant or tape when attaching the elbows to the bypass valves for a water tight seal. In addition to the PVC elbows I also bought three 24” long 1” MIP flexible stainless steel hoses from the local plumbing supply store since Home Depot doesn’t carry this size/style of hose. The filter system needs water pressure between 25 and 80 PSI and if you don’t know what your water pressure is, I have been able to rent a water pressure gauge from our local Home Depot in the past which is used for planning the installation of garden sprinkler systems. Installation was pretty straightforward however it would be useful if the instructions explained which of the two tanks is the house/carbon filter (it is the larger one). Before installing the system, you have to soak the carbon filter for 48 hours by filling it full of water using a hose. We did this outside so when the water flowed out once it had filled it wouldn’t damage our laundry room floor. After the carbon tank has soaked for 48 hours, you gently flow water through it to flush out the carbon dust for 30 minutes. The best way of describing this process is like flushing out a new ice maker filter on your fridge. With the soak/flush process complete, the bypass valves can be closed to prevent any water from leaking out of the tank and I used a dolly to haul the carbon tank inside the house and into the laundry room. We already had ¾” copper supply pipes in place for our old water filter system, so I was able to modify these with a few extra fittings to provide the water supply to the sediment filter and connect the filtered water to the outgoing house line. I probably spent a couple of hours trimming the old pipes and soldering the new fittings in place however I’m not a proficient plumber so someone who is can probably knock this part out in 30 minutes! With the tanks installed, the water can be switched back on and the tanks placed in ‘bypass’ mode which allows the air to bypass the filter tanks and be flushed out of an open faucet. With the air flushed out, the valves can be opened to fill the tanks and the softener tank is then soaked for an hour. Once the softener tank has soaked, you open a bath faucet and flush out the carbon dust etc. much like running a fridge water faucet after replacing the ice maker filter to get rid of the grey colored water. There will be a lot of carbon dust in the water and this will dissipate after a few minutes of running a high flow faucet like a bath. The only confusing aspect for me was whether to place the sediment filter in line before or after the two tanks. The diagram on the HD website shows it before the tanks while the instructions show it being installed after the tanks. Since we already had a sediment filter installed to filter the sand from our well water, we installed it before the carbon and softener tanks as it didn’t seem to make much sense to let sand filled water clog up the carbon filter and maybe shorten its useful life. There is a pressure gauge on the sediment filter which shows when the sediment filter begins to clog and needs replacing as the water pressure will reduce. Pelican recommends replacing the sediment filter every 6-9 months. The filter also comes with a five year manufacturer warranty and the warranty can be registered online at the pelicanwater website.
