How is it befo walking on the mat. Can pets harm the mat

Hi, this is very thin and not for walking on, will easily shred. I do not recommend letting pets walk on it. This is mainly to keep birds from eating and wind and rain from washing away seeds.

Is this the only size?

Can I use the mat (trimmed) to secure soil around or over sod plugs on a slope?

My thought would be it should work. It slowly disappears over time. If the lawn grows in quickly you can always remove what is left of the mat.

Avoid patchy growth: Read this first.
Just did a reseeding project on a 16’ x 3-4’ patch. First time, so I did a lot of research on videos and websites, from Scott’s to YouTube lawn care guys to try to find a consensus on how to “do it right.” When using this seed mat, this proved to be a mistake. Started first week of September, did appropriate ground prep, and put down Scott’s Lawnstarter soil. Put Scott’s sun and shade seed, and applied starter fertilizer. So far, so good. My error was adding the thin layer of Lawnstarter soil 1/8” on top of seed. Maybe it was the light raking. I dunno. I later found people wishing they hadn’t done this since it is too easy to add a little too much soil and bury the seeds, and just too hard to consistently keep a light layer. Ditto for peat moss. At any rate, looks like you can get a patchy growth based on areas with too much coverage. Seems obvious to me now, but this mat means you *don’t need any further layer*! If I could do it again, I would spread the seed evenly over the entire soil, then maybe lightly walk on soil (or use a roller?) to gently press seed into soil. Then spread the starter fertilizer next as per directions. Then apply the mat directly on to soil. You do need to initially use a shower hose to ensure the entire mat has been soaked enough to secure it so soil. Then twice a day watering maybe just 10-15m to keep soil moist for at least first few weeks. It’s pretty cool to see the growth pop through, but disappointing to see those bare patches and know exactly why. I’m pretty sure that extra layer business it to keeps seed secure and not eaten by birds, but the mat will already do this. (Personally I don’t buy the “mat choking out new grass” theory. I’d be willing to bet those folks may also have thrown an extra layer or raked in a way that left the seed distribution really erratic. Like me). Here’s some weekly time lapse pics up to my first cut this weekend. Hope this helps somebody.

Liked at first because seed under mat sprouted but then it became dense and choked out everything including weeds. The seed I planted outside the mat grew.

Totally Works, Especially on Slopes
Like anything, the prep work os essential. After cultivating (2”) and adding some quality topsoil, I seeded and used this mat to keep seed in place on my slightly sloped, small front yard. 4 rolls were used for this area, and I found it easy to work with once I got comfortable with it’s texture. I used a high quality, shade fescue seed and watered it 2x each day for a week. I left town for a 4-night work trip and was worried about not being able to continue watering per the instuctions for the seed. Long story short, I came home last Friday morning and found the results attached in the photo. I’ll recommend this to anyone starting a new lawn.

There have been three areas of our yard that have resisted grass seed for years. This year, we discovered, and used 4 rolls of Seed Starter Mat. All areas are showing remarkable growth - growth I attribute to the Seed Starter Mats keeping the seeds in place, moist and safe from the birds. Would recommend this product to all with a need.

Easy to put down over new seeding, and keeps the soil moist below to promote quick germination. I have found this to be better than the product with the fine plastic netting, which can end up getting chewed up in the mower the first time you cut. Seems to keep moisture better than straw covering, but there is my one complaint - one roll costs more than a bail of straw that can cover 4-5x the area.
