I only watered the area twice and my seeds germinated in ten days. It was a very thick growth, and I used annual rye grass..

Does this seed starter mat have the seeds already embedded in the mat and all i have to do is lay it down and water it?

Asked by: Canetwork
No seeds are in the mat. Seed first, then cover with the mat.

does netless grass work in shady areas?

Asked by: Saint Augustine
Pick a shade tolerant seed - that's the issue. this is not dependent on the mat itself, but on your choice of seeds. Example - bermuda won't do well in shade.

18 ft. x 39 in. Seed Starter Mat is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 172.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had great success! Had some steep slopes in my yard that running water would always wash away the seed and soil i would lay down this spring. I finally broke down and bought 3 rolls of this product to lay over and it worked like a charm! I finally have seed germination in those spots that were nearly bare before from running water in the rain. Make sure to soak with water on dry days to ensure mat stays in contact with the seed/soil. Highly recommended!

Easy to put down over new seeding, and keeps the soil moist below to promote quick germination. I have found this to be better than the product with the fine plastic netting, which can end up getting chewed up in the mower the first time you cut. Seems to keep moisture better than straw covering, but there is my one complaint - one roll costs more than a bail of straw that can cover 4-5x the area.

Or so said the pennington seed starter mat after one heavy rain - held down with pegs every foot because it was on a hill. It's too expensive. At maybe 9$ it would be worth it for the roll, then you could reasonably cover an area. But at 19$ a roll? no. It tears in heavy rain and does not decompose fast enough to allow re-seeding over the top of it a year later. So... I'm torn. I have seed growing through it, so it got some seed started where I needed it. But I don't know if it held enough of the seed in place through the rain. I'd give it 4 starts if it were under 10$ per roll.

One issue is that it took much longer to "disappear" then it says in the description. I still have remnants of the green mat in a majority of the area that my grass grew in.

Easy enough to put down, and once it's down, there's really no need to stake it to the ground. Unless you are planting grass during a hurricane or tornado, it isn't going anywhere. It does a great job of retaining water and keeping everything in place. It might look a little odd at first (I've been asked about it a dozen times), but the grass starts growing through it in no time. The only downside is the price. At ~$20 a roll, it's impractical to use it for a large area. I have a tiny front yard and had to buy 4 rolls to cover it.

I used this product last year for the first time to grow seed on a sloped area. It was a small area and we used four mats. It needs lawn staples to hold in place. Do not walk on the seed mat once in place because walking causes holes in the mat. Therefore I don't recommend in homes with outdoor pets. The mat is very fragile and will easily break when handled too much. Amazingly grass grew right through the mats in ten days. We only watered the area twice. Highly recommend for small areas of less than 1000 square feet. It is much better than straw.

The product does an effective job of holding soil in it's place on a slope and helps keeping moisture on the surface when there is a lack of rain and between sprinkling. However I found that you need to use a large number of "Staples" to keep the Mat material in place as the wind will tear it to pieces as it is very fragile especially when you first put it in place. Once the grass starts to grow and the degrading process take place it is OK.
