Product Overview

The Rebels Shade Mix for Tall Fescue grass seed is a tough, high quality turf grass that is designed for areas that receive limited sun each day. It contains tall fescue varieties blended with fine fescue for shade tolerance, allowing the flexibility to grow a beautiful lawn in shady conditions. The Rebels Extended Roots seed varieties maximize a lawn's ability to thrive, even under the toughest summer conditions. The Rebels Tall Fescue grass seed grows up to 40% more roots than ordinary grass at deeper depths for excellent drought resistance and nutrient uptake, helping your lawn thrive.
  • Produces a darker, greener and denser lawn than Kentucky-31 and other tall fescues
  • Cool season, aggressive, perennial bunchgrass that develops a uniform, thick turf as it matures
  • Maintains a deep green color throughout the growing season
  • Contains improved heat, drought and disease resistant varieties
  • Withstands heavy traffic, insects, and drought for lower maintenance
  • Grows up to 40% more roots than ordinary grass for excellent drought resistance and nutrient uptake
  • Best for partial shade (less than 4-hours of sun per day)
  • Germinates in 7-days to 21-days
  • Covers up to 750 sq. ft.
  • Not recommended for use in warm season lawns

It seems like very good quality grass seed to me. I used it to fill in some sparse areas of my lawn and no weeds sprouted along with the "baby grass."

I've planted a lot of grass seed over the years, from every major manufacturer and even several specialized online retailers that sell "high end" grass seed. Well, needless to say, the Pennington Smart Seed 3 lb. Dense Shade Grass Seed PC Mix not quite the "high end" stuff, but it comes pretty close. I have never had a problem with germination. In ideal conditions, it germinated in only a few days. This was with proper site preparation, good seed to soil contact, and watering 3x per day for the first 2 weeks, then trailing off from there about a month later. The color is nice too. It's certainly not as light as the typical contractor grade seed that dominates America's suburbs, but it is pretty close. So, in other words, if you want a perfect match to your lawn, this seed is on the darker side of what is considered average. So, if you need grow grass in a fairly shady area, the Pennington Smart Seed 3 lb. Dense Shade Grass Seed PC Mix might be for you. Good luck.

I used the seed to patch areas in my lawn and covered the seed with burlap. Unfortunately a few days later we had a lot of rain in a short time and had heavy flooding that covered most my lawn. All the flooding washed most of seed away. The seed was planted in an area under a tree where I have trouble growing grass, so it is difficult to give a true evaluation. In small areas where there was some seed left did seem to grow. I will need to get more seed again and try again.

Recommend putting down some good topsoil down first (lawnsoil by Scott's) and sprinkle area with seeds and a little bit of starter fertilizer. Lightly mix together with rake. Put straw on top(I used ace hardware prepackaged straw, it is a little bit ground up and goes on even and has a tack additive so it does blow away. Once a day put some water on it and grass will grow.

My intention was to buy online and pick up on my way home, but that did not happen. Now the order has been delayed over another week where as I can just pop in today and make the purchase. Which is what I will do and just return the ridiculous online items once they finally arrive.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too slow to germinate, too slow to grow I thought this would be a great option for seed but it has been more problem then it's worth. This was a reseed of approx 100 sq ft. Tilled earth, soil balances checked, tossed a bit of peet on top. Took forever to germinate, slow growing. Watered everyday. Meanwhile the Scott's I used a month later has already outgrew where I used Pennington.

I not only use this stuff for patching (covered in fresh topsoil) but also to overseed in early spring since the fertilizer caked onto the seeds helps to feed established grass root systems as well (effectively killing 2 birds with one stone).
