What is the germination time for these seeds???

I laid down this product 8 days ago and dont see any sign of grass beginning to form. What is the germination time supposed to be? I planted per the instructions on the bag and have watered twice daily. Did i waste 50$ on a product that is not going to grow...
Asked by: Coug514
The product page says 7 to 21 days germination time.

Hi CI, We always recommend having a soil test done first. This will tell you which soil amendments need to be added prior to seeding. The soil bed needs to be soft and loose, to ensure good seed to soil contact. Thanks!

Can/should this be used to start a new lawn on a bare yard?
Asked by: bjdapoet
I have to agree with WXH. This is generally considered a "repair" seeding and does not fair well on 'barebone' yards. Although it will grow, it will not produce the kind of results you may be looking for. Take the first couple of years to cultivate your ground and work your way up. Depending on zone is usually what dictates type of grass, bearing in mind the average mean heat index where you live.

I've always bought Pennington grass seed, then had to put top soil over the seed after I spread it. I thought this would be worth the extra expense, since it would eliminate half the work. However, it has taken over a month for the seed to sprout at all, and so far, it is kind of sparse in many places. I'm afraid I'm going to end up having to buy more seed and go back to the old way of doing it. In all fairness to the seed, our weather has been less than ideal, as we're 80 degrees one day and snowing the next week. I waited this long to write the review as I really was hoping for great results. So far, I'm not thrilled, but I can see that it will at least be better than all of the winter killed areas that I had before I used this product. It is pretty expensive for my budget, but hoped the results would pay off. I'm giving it four stars though, due to ease of use - and the feeling that with better weather I'd of had better sprouting.

I bought 3 bags of this stuff to fix bare spots where I had pulled up weeds in the lawn. I'm in South Florida. I did follow the instructions and watered it daily for a solid month. It did finally start to sprout in some of the areas I patched. Rainy season started and we got rain daily for a week so I forgot about it. That all began about 2 months ago. Recently I went out specifically to check on the patches. Most of them have returned to just the brown "mulch" as pictured on the front of the package. In other words, I no longer see any of the blades of grass, yet the patches do look slightly smaller in general but that may be because the rest of the lawn has started to grow its vines across the patches. (Our grass grows from a vine that runs horizontally across the soil. I'm not sure what the name of it is, but it is very common in S. Fla) Anyway, at $15/bag, I'm not going to buy this again, I'd rather get some seed & sprinkle some soil over it.

We moved from South Florida where we had Bermuda grass, which grows like a weed to East Tennessee with a new Tall Fescue lawn. I have zero experience with Tall Fescue. I bought the Pennington to fill in the gaps of the poorly sodded lawn from the builder, and I also wanted to see if it would work on areas my dog killed with urine. I'm amazed how quickly the grass grew and how thick it was. I also found a large area on the side of the house where my dog was digging. On Saturday, I covered the area and set the sprinkler to water just a few minutes twice a day to keep it moist. On Thursday, I already have sprouts! The only drawback (not the seed's fault) is that the new sprouts can't handle the heat. We had 2 weeks of 85+ degree weather, and the areas I seeded about 4 weeks ago that were in direct sunlight all day died. The areas that had partial sun (even mostly sun) survived and are doing OK. This will definitely be my "go to" seed for patches, but like any seed, using it in fall or early spring will give the sprouts a chance to be strong enough for hot summer. The pictures are the new patch after 4 1/2 days!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked exactly as stated Had a huge spot to repair. Took down a 60 foot maple tree and ground the stump to 5-6 inches below ground level. This left a 10’x10’ crater after removing all the stump grindings. Filled the hole with a quality bagged garden soil (30 cubic ft) and used this Pennington product since the area was part sun/shade. As you can see by the photos the product worked exactly as stated. Germinated in 7 days, full lawn in 17 days. I think the other reviewers that had a negative opinion did not follow the directions, or failed to fertilize after well established (new grass needs some nitrogen). What is critical in growing grass is to never let the seed dry out once it has swelled with water. If that happens the seed becomes unviable. I found that the mulch in the product (basically sawdust) held the seed in place well, even in some heavy rains, without washing away. Great product if used correctly. Also did some patches and had the same spectacular results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from it grew I spread at probably twice the rate it suggested, kept it wet by watering twice a day, missing once or twice, and after 10 days it started to germinate and just under 3 weeks has filled in well. A few bare/thin spots which was most likely from wash off in a few of the heavy rains that occured in the first week after seeding
