Can Ryegrass blend be seeded over a yard that has grass and weeds

Asked by: PawPaw
Best to take week killer to the lawn then seed with this seed. Make sure to keep the area moist for 10 days after seed.

Does hay/straw need to be scattered over seed after spreading of the seed

Asked by: Donnapf
I did not have to do it. However it does require a lot of watering during seeding and look out for the birds. They were all over it.

If your looking for a nice lawn during the cooler months this seed works well but it will go dormant and look terrible as soon as the temps hit the high 80s. I planted in late August and this seed produced a fast lush lawn. It almost looked artificial it was so nice but the next summer it died back and I had to reseed again in the fall. This might be a good grass if you live in Canada but it can't even withstand a New York summer.

Since building my new home last year I have seeded over 750 pounds of this stuff. The lawn looks like it has been there for years. The only trick is to keep the ground moist and not drying out while the seed germinates. It will grow on anything. I spilled some on my crush rock driveway and now I have a patch of grass there I need to take care of. I attached a picture of what a seeding looks like 8 days after seeded.

I've been using this seed to over-seed existing lawns & to plant new lawns in the Inland North West/Spokane area for 3 years now. I put it down pretty heavy, cover it with grass clippings & the seed sprouts as thick as sod. 3 weeks after seeding your already mowing it. This seed is immune to fairy ring & necrotic spot ring and is the reason we started overseeing lawns with it. HOWEVER, we have discovered it does not survive winter well. After some winters it comes back in the spring just fine but we had a long bad winter this last season & some of the properties we had seeded did not come back this spring. This is a tuff, good looking grass in the summer but unfortunately the cool season nature of our region causes some winter die off with perennial rye and requires re-seeding in the spring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bowled over by this seed! I live on long Island. During the month of April I had applied a pre-emergent and lawn feed. I started with a lawn of many big and small bare spots after a cesspool dig up, but clear of all weeds. A week ago on 5/19/17 we put down a thick layer of top soil throughout lawn. We put down plenty of seed, tilled it in lightly and sprinkled top with more seed. Not even a full week Later, on the following Thursday we saw grass sprouts erupting. Today on Saturday...8 days after seed was dropped the amount of grass coming in is amazing. Weather this week has had been drizzly and rainy so mother nature watered it gently for us. Today is 5/27 and this Morning we have hoards of growth so far!

The weather this week has been rainy and moist which has helped immensilly. I have never seen any other grass seed grow quicker!! As time goes on I will see if the seed is consistent with growth. WIll keep the review posted.

I gave an Overall Rating because The Home Depot website delivered the product on-time and exactly what I ordered. I also order this product because its a winter grass and it grows very well and fast. It helps that its a Ryegrass and that it's a Perennial Blend. I also love it because it has a dark green color to it. I would recommend it. I use it in Northern Indiana and in North Carolina (west of Greensboro).

They said it is too cold for this grass, but my local golf course greenskeeper recommended it and it has been working fine for 2 years and holding up. Although we have had mild winters. But the grass looks great in summer and winter. There were some wild seeds that created weed, but we sprayed for weed control twice and haven't had any other issues.
