About This Product

Tall fescue is valued for its adaptability to a wide range of climates and its tolerances for cold, heat, drought and shade. Ideal for the northern and transition zones, Pennington The Rebels Tall Fescue has represented the finest quality of tall fescue on the market for decades. This grass is tough. It has thick, deep, and dense roots that result in excellent drought and traffic tolerance. In areas of your yard that receive 4-hours to 6-hours of sunlight, plant it in early spring or early fall and see results in 8-days to 16-days. This 40 lbs. bag covers up to 10,000 sq. ft. for overseeding an existing lawn and 3,330 sq. ft. for starting a new lawn from scratch. The Roots of The Rebels Brand dates back to 1979, when turf researchers at Rutgers University released a revolutionary new grass. Known as Rebel, it was the very first example of what's now known as turf-type tall fescue. Compared to traditional tall fescue, Rebel offered lower growth, finer texture, darker color and denser turf - plus the drought tolerance that makes turf-type tall fescue a homeowner favorite. Generations later, with up to 40% more roots than ordinary grass, The Rebels Brand Extended Root seed varieties represent the best turf-type tall fescue on the market. With roots like those, it's only natural that The Rebels Brand carries the Pennington name.

Q:I live in Northwest Arkansas. We have a nice Bermuda lawn but have some shady areas where the Bermuda is very sparse. Will this blend well with the rest of the Bermuda lawn is planted in the shady areas? If not, is there a seed you would recommend?

Answer This Question

A:  Hello! The only type of grass that can grow alongside Bermuda is Ryegrass. However, it is not a grass that is meant for heavily shaded areas. Please give us a call at 1-800-285-7333 so we can discuss this further with additional information.

Q:How effective it is in North Texas Area? How well they do in North Texas / Dallas summer ( May - August) ?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello! Tall Fescue is typically not recommend for southern regions due to the high heat, unless it's in a shaded area of the lawn. It's a cool season grass that does not thrive well in hot weather, however, it does become somewhat more tolerant of summer heat as it matures over the years.

Q:Can it be left unmown? What is the matured height being unmown? How fine the blades is it in mm? How much water per week it need in summer in the East Bay of San Francisco area? Thanks.

        Answer This Question

A:  While you can leave this to grow without mowing, we do not recommend doing so in residential areas. Tall Fescue can grow up to three to four feet and will eventually go to seed. Watering is dependent on soil, maturity of the lawn and the weather at that specific time. We would recommend calling your local county's Extension Agent for detailed watering schedules that are relevant to your area and needs.

Great choice. Grew dense grass very easily.
I needed to patch some damaged areas of my lawn. This product worked great with minimal effort, growing thick grass where we had completely torn up my lawn to build a raised bed. This is in an area of my lawn that gets 6 to 10 hours of partial sun, depending on the month. I removed rocks and weeds and loosened the soil, added some compost, spread the seeds, covered with straw and set the sprinkler then left town for 3 weeks. When I returned, the grass was lush and thick. Recommended!

I really wanted this to work.
I spread this seed in the early spring after the threat of frost was gone. It is very disappointing. I followed a strict regiment of crabgrass preventer(early February), overseeding (early April), weed and feed (middle May). Seed never really seem to take. I had rye grass growing during the winter and my lawn looked great. Not happy with the results of this seed b

It started sprouting on day 14. This picture is from day 21. It looks really good. I seeded and added a starter fertilizer.

                  Just to Test this out
This year has been pretty bad for me to grow grass at the end of September. I brought the small bag of Pennington the Rebels grass seeds. It is October 17 2023. I like how the product worked out for me. I will use this next season.

                    I wouldn't recommend
I tilled existing soil, brought in 3" of Landscapers Choice topsoil and planted in perfect growing conditions and per the instructions on the bag. After 19 days only approximately 1/3 of the seed germinated. Very disappointed!

                      Didn't grow
It's perfect weather for grass to grow. It's been cool, I've watered regularly, I planted ihigh quality soil. Not 1 single seed has bloomed. Says this product is guaranteed to bloom, I'd like a refund!

                        Looking Good!!
I re-planted grass after some grading ork in my yard. It is looking good even though it has been really hot and dry the past few weeks.
