Describe the color of the Auburn scraped flooring. Does it look mainly red? Does it show dirt....hard to clean?
Asked by: JC
The floor is a darker shade! I don't really see much red in ours at all. It's very easy to clean! Dirt doesn't show up much but dust and dust bunnies do, of course. Its an excellent choice for flooring! We absolutely love ours.

Can this be installed on ceiling?

Im looking to replace my popcorn ceiling with wood. I have a vaulted ceiling
Asked by: VB2
Like the Pergo people said, this would not be appropriate for a ceiling. A better choice would be any nail-down product: ship lap, nail-down flooring, bead board (the real stuff, not the Masonite panel bead board), etc. Also, you could just lightly spray the popcorn ceiling with water and scrape it off with a long-handled scraper made for that purpose.

We would like to avoid a transition if possible. I plan to install 1500 sf over plywood in 4 bedrooms and the hallway. Two of the bedrooms have 4' doorways, and the install instructions require transitions for "doorways of less than 4 feet". The hallway is about 30' long with a bedroom door on each side, so from a diagonal view I can draw a straight line about 60' from the front to the back. The attached image shows the intended direction of the planks. Given that the two doorways are angled and 4 feet wide, will I need transitions there? I assume the other two doorways will need a transition? Thank you!
Asked by: Mike
I did not follow the instructions per se and I had a similar project. I ended up doing transitions in the places where I wanted to change the direction of the flooring. So, in your picture example I probably would do all the bedrooms with planks going left wall to right wall. One thing that you may run into in doing it all the way it's is draw if frustrating connections. For example in BR2 you are carrying your planks from the foyer full of short cuts into a room with minimal cuts and you will be running planks both directions. it can be done but I found it frustrating because when you tap a piece into place you have nothing to tap against (so you tap one piece and another comes apart). Further, when you get to the wall in a BR like #2 you may end up with cuts you don't like or find out a wall or your flooring is not entirely straight. That being said, if it were me, I would do transitions in BR 2 and 3 to change the direction of the flooring. I would then also transition the other 2 so all the BR's match. If I left out any transition it would be from the master BR into the foyer. Of note, the trim pieces come in fairly long sections, so even tho they are pricy, you might be able to do 2 doorways with each piece. Hope this helps. I am a DIYer so take that for what it's worth, too.

Do we need to use additional underlayment for putting on wood subfloor? Do you recommend more?

Asked by: Chip
No, but I would put down a vapor barrier to prevent moisture from coming through.

It’s only been 2 weeks and we’re still installing the new baseboard but we’re loving it. We installed it in our Double-Wide Mobile Home (L/R, MB/R and Kitchen/D/R). We went straight across the “marriage line” which is where the two halves of the mobile home are joined. We didn’t want to have a large transition piece and It looks beautiful and makes the rooms look much larger. We plan on continuing it throughout the rest of the House. Obviously, I can’t rate the flooring on its long term durability but Hubby says the installation was pretty easy. He watched many experts videos on installing laminate flooring beforehand and picked up a lot of helpful hints. Buy the tools as recommended and you’ll make your life easier and avoid damaging the flooring. I really wanted the hand scrapped look and it really adds to the charm. We had very little waste and ended up returning several unopened/unneeded boxes as a result. We found the 10% allowance was excessive, but no problem returning them to The Home Depot.

Granted it is the first floor I've done so I have no comparison, but "easy" is not a word I would use to describe the process. I watched video after video, cursed a lot and finally was able to make headway after reading MikefromPhoenix's review. I followed his instruction and was finally able to make headway. It looks very pretty but the reviews about chipping are spot on. I have several areas that I will have to touch up with a furniture pen. I didn't drop anything on it, it happened with the installation. I also noticed it varies a lot box to box. I opened one box and it was like a completely different floor, color darker and clicked into place no problem. I am guessing it is a different processing center? Just a guess. I am only half way done after 3 days and am hoping I get more boxes like that. If you haven't already purchased it, I'd try something else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We just love our Pergo Outlast+ Auburn Scraped Oak laminate flooring! We recently decided to replace all of our old, worn carpeting throughout our home. I researched laminate flooring for weeks. I had read several online articles that said that laminate flooring was not a good choice for pet owners because it's only water resistant for 30 minutes. I found an article about the new Pergo Outlast+ and decided it would be perfect for us. I love the fact that it's water resistant for up to 24 hours! I chose the Auburn Scraped Oak because, but I was a little hesitant to purchase it after I read a few reviews that didn't recommend it because it really shows the dirt and lint due to its dark color. My husband and I decided to purchase enough to do our two guest rooms before we decided to purchase enough to do the entire house. We installed it about two weeks ago and we love it! As you can see from the photo we have a long haired white cat. This is her favorite room to nap in. The new floor doesn't show cat hair or kitty litter at all! We will be purchasing enough to do the rest of our house now!

We installed 1600sq ft of Auburn Scraped Oak and it changed the whole look of the house. We have a neighbor who had real oak installed and she liked the look and feel of ours better than her own. We have pets and I was worried about scratches but have not had any even when our dogs play crazy dogs and run and spin out of control like they are on something. My wife freaks out and starts yelling at the dogs because she thinks they will scratch the floor and it just makes it worse! No scratches. The weakness I have seen is that if you drop something metal on an edge it will chip but that was during the installation. Once installed there are no edges to chip because it has a slanted seam where they join together making it impossible to hit an edge. There needs to be more options for molding for this product. There is not a lot of choices except maybe stain your own and install. Very durable and looks great!

There IS a trick to installing Outlast - it took me about 2 boxes to figure it out. We took our work apart and started over at that point. I was going CRAZY with getting the planks to stay locked together. I would get the first row together, then when I added the second row, adding a new plank would pull previously installed ones apart. The gaps were everywhere! I realized that my baseboards were raised up from the floor just about 9mm (just a little less than the thickness of the planks) - probably to allow the installation of flooring under it when the house was built (but the original owner put down peel and stick vinyl, then carpeted over that later). The upshot was that the spacers that held the flooring away from the wall were not well supported, and when I tapped (or really pounded) the planks with the tapping block, the planks which were supposed to be rigid and provide support to the subsequent rows, were actually moving and causing the gaping. So, we pulled the first row away from the wall and put some 2x4's along the wall to act as a rigid backstop. The second row then went on much easier. We would slide the short edges together, then rotate the plank down so the long edges are close together. Then, standing on the previous row to give additional weight on the previous row, I would use the tapping block to tap the long edges together, starting at the short end that I just joined, and moving down the length of the plank. Putting a full box on the first few rows also helped keep things rigid and in place. I found that it helped to lift up the long edge at the opposite end slightly as I hit the tapping block to allow the tongue to slide in property. You can tell that the edges are clicked together and locked when the new plank suddenly rotates downwards. If the new plank is tilted up, it isn't locked! When the new plank is in correctly installed, the groove edges at the original short end will be totally flush and there will be no gap between the planks. After about 4 rows, we removed the 2x4s, replaced the plastic spacers, and slid the flooring back in place (the plastic moisture barrier made that easy). We really love the look and feel of this flooring. Durability and scratch resistance will be something we will learn more about as time goes on, but experimenting with samples seems like it is pretty scratch resistant.

I am finding chipped pieces on the ends of some boards along with torn underlament. Those will go back to HD. Much care has to be taken when installing the boards. Make sure you stick a shim under the boards. It makes the boards go in easier. I could not give it a 1 rating, because it does look good when it is completed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Laminate Flooring Available In The Market I literally researched every major maker of laminate, vinyl, and hardwood flooring. Went to at least 5 different flooring suppliers and this is by far the best looking product for the money. I was also hesitant because I had heard so many negative things about water and laminate flooring, but this stuff is incredibly durable and I have had zero problems!
