Seed Guide

Every bird species has their own seed preferences. Fill your feeders based on the type of bird you want to attract.

cardinals, squirrel resistant seed feeders

These non-migratory birds are a favorite of many bird lovers. They prefer black-oil sunflower seed and mixed seed.

chickadees, squirrel resistant seed feeders

These adorable birds love to feast on black-oil sunflower seed, mixed seed, peanuts, and mealworms.

finches, squirrel resistant seed feeders

There are many varieties of finches. These beauties enjoy eating mixed seed and Nyjer / thistle.

nuthatches, squirrel resistant seed feeders

For nuthatches, the larger the food, the better. They prefer black-oil sunflower seed, mixed seed, and peanuts.

titmice, squirrel resistant seed feeders

In the summer, titmice mainly feed on insects. But they also enjoy seeds, particularly mixes that include seeds, nuts, and berries.

The Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone Wild Bird Feeder features six feeding ports, U-shaped perches and holds 2 lb. of seed. The interior seed tower is surrounded by rustic metalwork. The feeding ports have sturdy metal perches that allow birds to feed comfortably but, when the squirrels perch on them, their weight causes the entire metal casing to slip down, completely blocking the feeding ports and their access to the seed. The six perch/feeding station set-up, coupled with the anti-squirrel technology makes this feeder one of the most economical and convenient on the market. The clear, shatter-proof plastic reservoir makes it easy to monitor seed levels. Remember to clean your feeder once every two weeks with mild soap and water solution. Comes fully assembled with seed tray. Perky-Pet is the leading supplier of Wild Bird Feeders and Accessories. Perky-Pet Wild Bird Feeder models lure the bird in pursuit of seed providing you with hours of joy as random wild birds flock to feed at your house.

A:  You just have to check it and see what it’s catching on. May need to check the springs also.

A:  I would think so , although I have mine hanging from a pole . I have not seen any try to climb up the pole . I don't know if they would access from a tree .

            by|Jul 25, 2021

A:  This bird feeder should keep chipmunks from getting to the food.

            by|Jul 26, 2021

            A:  Mine seems to.

            by|Jul 26, 2021

A:  This feeder is not designed to be resistant to chipmunks.

            by|Jul 26, 2021

A:  I’ve never seen any chipmunks on my rim of the canyon. Being smaller than most squirrels, it probably will work for chipmunks.

              A:  Be careful when using a hair dryer to dry this feeder. If the hair dryer is too close or too het, it will melt the plastic. I speak from experience. :- {

              by|Dec 15, 2022

A:  I use a strong hose flow and power it out and that gets the majority of it out, then I blow it dry with a hair dryer. The bottom doesn’t come off, if it does, you may not get it back on.

A:  I use a aluminum skewer rod to poke out any seeds that have gotten stuck on the inside or bottom of the feeder. Also, banging it gently on concrete or a metal fence post will help to loosen stuck seeds. I would not attempt to take apart for fear of not being able to re-assemble correctly.

A:  I bought this for my mom... I believe she uses the garden hose and squirts it out best she can.. Sorry this wasn't more helpful.

                by|Jul 3, 2021

A:  This feeder is not designed to be taken apart for cleaning. We recommend soaking it in mild soapy water and using a long bottle brush to scrub.

                  by|Jul 2, 2021

A:  inadviseable to disassemble and not necessary. I’ve removed the birdseed ‘cake’ that filters to the bottom and hardens by using a long thin rod (think wire coat hanger) or screwdriver. Angle it in through one of the lowest feeder ports and break up the cake then simply shake it all out by turning the feeder upside down.

A:  This is the best feeder! I have tried many, squirrels and heavy birds get on it and the ports close, the weight of the squirrel or bluejay pulls the feeder down a bit and they are out of luck....... its wonderful

                          Definitely NOT squirrel proof
Squirrels love this feeder. Not for the birds. Birds do not eat from it.

I love how it looks. It works great, the squirrels can’t get the seeds. It’s funny watching them try.

The cage provides an excellent place for the squirrels to hold onto while getting their grub on!

I really wish I had been more careful when taking out of the factory packaging so I could have returned this . It is a bird feeder so I did not even think of a problem . I replaced a round version that is similar to this one and it worked great for 4 years . Birds would empty the food from it in 3 days . Using feed from the same bag they will not touch this .There has to be something they do not like about the feed ports . It seems it is difficult to get their little beeks in there far enough .

                                  great bird feeder
I just recently purchased my second of these bird feeders - only because my previous one was getting old and cloudy looking. This is my favorite feeder of all time. It is quite attractive and the spring action is a very clever way to keep out the squirrels. I have no problems with them getting into the feeder. But they do gather on the ground under the feeder to eat up the leftovers from the birds. It keeps everyone happy!

                                    Keeps squirrels out!
Like most people who feed the birds, I hate seeing a day's worth of bird food gone in ten minutes due to the fluffy-tailed tree rats! In all honesty, I throw seeds on the ground for the squirrels, but I like to have some available all day for the birds. This feeder works like a charm - the squirrels have simply quit paying attention to it because they cannot get any food from it. The grackles, which can eat a lot of food, have discovered that one grackle t a time can feed here, but if a second one lands on it, the baffle slides down, blocking access to the seeds. So, when a grackle is feeding here, they protest aggressively when a second one tries to land! The blue jays have left it alone. I have a larger sunflower seed feeder for the cardinals, blue jays, and grackles. This feeder is for the smaller birds. I back up to a preserve and during the winter have three pairs of painted buntings that come to this feeder, so I like to keep it stocked for them.

A finches head got stuck in this feeder. It was extremely traumatic. It doesn’t detach easily I had to break it to get it open. Photo is where finches head was stuck.

                                      Great bid feeder
I bought one of these several years ago after losing two other bird feeders to the squirrels. This model was very effective against the squirrels and for a lot less $$ than the one at a major competitor's store. After 3 years of the elements, the plastic part dried out and cracked so I went and purchased another one just like it. The second one was so enjoyable that I bought a third one to bring even more birds to the yard. Now, my yard has become a bird haven. I enjoy watching all the animals get a belly full.
