The hot water on my 40-year old Kohler 3-valve shower started gushing and the handle did nothing, just spun and spun. Tried shutting off the old valve at the water heater and it still kept flowing. No emergency shutoff for the shower circuit, either, so the entire house water system had to be shut down. I researched info online and This Old House (sponsored by the Home Depot) Youtube videos explained how the valves worked. All I wanted was a temporary plug until I could order the OEM stem during the work week (this happened Saturday night so everyone except Home Depot was closed on Sunday). This valve was in stock and did an excellent job temporarily plugging the hot water until I could order the original parts.

Halleluia. I've replaced maybe 35 of these so I do have experience with it. Ok so I have to admit... I bought the diverter stem and the hot and cold from PM(after market brand).. The hot and cold stems fit fine, but the diverter wasn't manufactured correctly. The threads were maybe half the size of the price pfister diverter stem. I wasted so much time. I was sure I bought the correct diverter stem, which I did, but the PM one wasn't cut correctly. Wasted an hour. I took it back to Home Depot and the associate gave me the Price Pfister one. It fit like a glove! Sometimes it pays to pay a couple dollars more for the actual thing. Lesson learned. Remember, when changing the diverter, you do not have to shut off your water.
