Questions & Answers

Will these bulbs work in a shop light fixture that currently uses 40W warm white fluorescent bulbs?

Asked by: Ronnie
yes as long as the ballast is a instant start. I have them working with rapid start ballast also.

Can these bulbs be used in rewired flourescent fixtures?

Asked by: Rich
This lamp will not work in 85% of fixtures found in homes today!!! These lamps must have an electronic ballast feeding them power!!! They will not work without a ballast in the circuit!!! They will not work with a magnetic ballast!!! They only work if your fixture is less than 5 years old as almost every fixture more than 5 years old had a magnetic ballast.

Can you bypass the ballast ?

I have replace 14 tubes in my basement last fall with LED tubes that don't use the ballast. The 120v are directly applied to each end of the tube. I would like to known if the philips instantfit led bulb can be wired the same way or only be use with electronic ballast?
Asked by: Marc
They should be able to wire exactly how you wired your previous ones. My company does this all the time, we actually prefer to get rid of the ballasts all together even if they are the plug and play version like this one. Leaving the ballast is only another component that will require maintenance and add wattage to your fixture since the ballast do take up to sometimes 20W each additional to what your lamps are. So we just bypass the ballast all together. The point is to reduce the wattage so why keep the ballast if you dont need it. So to answer your questions yes wire them straight to the tombstones like you have been and bypass the ballast all together. You dont need the ballast, LED come with their own drivers that do the same function as a ballast.

Customer Reviews

32-Watt Equivalent 4 ft. T8 Instant Fit Linear LED Light Bulb Cool White (4000K) is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really SWEET FINALLY, we have a good, affordable T8 Fluorescent bulb replacement. This T8 baby changes your Fluorescent 32 watts, 4100K, 2800 lumens, 21.9 years, to LED 14.5 watts, 4000K, 1600 lumens, 36.5 years (SWEET). For some reason the lumens (1600 vs. 2800) don’t tell the whole story; because the 1600 lumen LED is just as bright as the 2800 lumen Fluorescent (double SWEET). There is a catch though. There are two types of fluorescent electronic ballasts, “Rapid Start” and “Instant Start” (the rectangular thing inside your Fluorescent fixture). These InstantFix LED bulbs require the “Instant Start” ballasts and will not work with the “Rapid Start”. I found this out when I called Phillips to ask “What’s Wrong”. I had “Rapid Start” and had to replace them with “Instant Start”. The “Rapid Start” ballasts I had were also very low quality, so replacing them was a good idea anyway. Replacing them was simple; but the wiring is different; so just Google that. It’s also great not having to worry about breaking the glass Fluorescent bulbs because the InstantFix LED is plastic (triple SWEET). Thank you Phillips!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This lamp will not work in 85% of fixtures found in homes today!!! I feel the box claims of “InstantFit” and “”Plug N Play” is false and misleading!!! I did test the lamp with an electronic ballast it has good color and high brightness but there are very few types of ballast it will work with. I called Philips they have a list of compatible ballasts. Please note the list is not printed on the box!!! . Walta

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bulbs! These are simply awesome. They are clear, crisp, low-energy, easy to install, and start instantaneously. Keep in mind that if you don't have a compatible ballast, you will need to replace it, or the lamp won't light up at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Definitely worth it! I was about to buy another brand of LED T8 replacements online, but found these in stock so I thought I would try them instead. I bought (4) tubes to replace some old T12s I had in my kitchen, so I also had to buy new ballasts as well. Replacement was easy even with a new ballast. I wish they were slightly brighter, but at 110 lumens per watt it's really good....maybe it's just my tired eyes. Nice clean white light....no bluish hue. Retrofitting new ballasts and bulbs into the existing housing cost me about half what a totally new LED fixture would have. My kitchen lights are on 10-16 hours a day so this will save me some serious cash! Workshop is next!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't work in any of my fixtures I purchased these to replace two of the eight fluorescent bulbs in my garage. I have previously installed LED tube replacements in other fixtures in the house where I had to rewire around the ballast (i.e., remove the ballast). They work great, but I thought it would be fun to try a "drop in replacement" so I didn't have to spend ten minutes doing the rewiring job. Well, these dropped in just fine, but they didn't work. At all. My fixtures were installed twenty-one years ago, and apparently do not use the "instant start" ballast that these tubes require. What's more, neither Philips nor Home Depot provide any help in telling you that these won't work with several of the other types of ballasts used for fluorescent bulbs, even though when you buy fluorescent bulbs, they will work with pretty much any ballast that doesn't use a starter. I just checked, and there is no warning or label on the outside of the Philips box, and it is not until you take the bulb out of the package that you see, in very small print, a label that says these tubes require the instant start ballast. In addition, how the heck are you supposed to know if you have instant start, rapid start (a different system), quick start, or semi-resonant start? Again, neither Philips nor Home Depot provides any help. So, Philips and Home Depot both get very low marks because they fail to provide any warnings, guidance, or any information whatsoever about compatibility requirements.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light quality I replaced several 40W fluorescent T12 fixtures with these LED T8s. I was concerned that the light output would not be enough, since the T8 LED is rated at 1600 lumens compared to the fluorescent T12s rated at 2600 lumens, but I was surprised to see that I was getting as much light as the 40W tubes I replaced. Also, the light quality is far superior with a much better white color than the green hue common to the fluorescents (see side-by-side comparison photo). I did go ahead and replace the old T12 ballasts as well to Instant Start T8 ballasts, since my old T12 ballasts would not have worked.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy install, works great, saves money Product worked as described. I replaced over 340 watts of bulbs with less than 120 watts. The lights are actually brighter than what I anticipated they would be!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product Didn't Work for Me. As was the case with other reviewers these tubes are not compatible with my ballasts. I asked someone in the electrical department at Home Depot if these would be a good replacement for my fluorescent tubes. He assured me that they would be. I got home and installed them and got no light! Went back to Home Depot and asked the same person for help. He said he had no ideas why they wouldn't work. I had to do my own research to find out that I had the wrong type of ballast for this product. Disappointed!
