Questions & Answers

Can I use this bulb in a light fixture that was originally limited to a regular 60 watt incandecent bulb?

Does it have a lower amount of heat than a incandecent bulb that would make it safe to use even though it is rated to be the equivalent of a 75 watt bulb? I could use the higher light level. Is it dimmable?

Can this LED be used in an enclosed fixture?

Asked by: patroller76
Always. However, since LED bulbs of ALL types & brands use "electronics" inside the bulb fixture. This can only shorten the life expectancy of the bulb.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bright and Inexpensive, but not dimmable Most LED bulbs of the past few years have only come in “soft white”, a color temperature that mimics old incandescent bulbs. “Cooler” (i.e. bluer) bulbs have been dimmer and prohibitively expensive. These bulbs put an end to that. At 9.5 actual watts, these LEDs generate the equivalent of 75 watt bulbs, and the “daylight” color provides more pleasing color renditions and a more energetic ambiance. I find it easier to read and work under “daylight” conditions, and we placed these bulbs accordingly. They're great in offices, studies, playrooms, craft areas, exercise rooms, etc. They aren't as appropriate for bedrooms, where the light's color makes it hard to prepare for sleep. The per-bulb cost is as cheap as most dimmer, soft-white LED bulbs and given the projected lifetime of almost 11,000 hours they will save considerably on electricity cost over older incandescent bulbs. They turn on instantly and stay fairly cool to the touch, but can't be used with dimmers – one reason they can be sold at lower cost. But if bright, daylight-colored lighting is a requirement, these are a great option!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Bulbs These LED bulbs are getting better and better. These compare in size to incandescent bulbs and are just a little bit heavier. They give off a great amount of light. They seem brighter than their incandescent or even CFL equivalent. And at only 9.5 watts compared to 75w. On the Home Depot website under questions and answers, a Philips representative states that these cannot be used in an enclosed fixture. However, no where on the packaging can I find a statement like that. If it's true then that certainly limits your applications. I'd like to know why, because I always thought LEDs were cooler burning- so that doesn't make sense to me. And if there's some danger to that, than a warning should definitely be on the package.
