Bought 3 of these ballasts at Home Depot for T 12 , F40 florescent 4 foot lamps . Only needed one ballast for one lamp only . Used the two red wires for one side of bulb and one common yellow for other side of bulb fixture . The others pares ( blues and yellow common ) where capped off . Energized circuit where the wired up bulb lite dimly . After about 20 minutes the new florescent bulb ends started to turn black . Same happed to the other ballast and a new lamp . The input source voltage was measured at 127 VAC. Bought them back to Home depot for a refund , and bought The GE equivalent which was wired in the same fashion and worked very well like they always do . Problem : There appears to be a manufacturing problem with Philips Ambistar RELB-2S40-N ballast .
Asked by: Mike
I’m glad the Phillips rep chimed in here about wiring for one lamp. Use blue and red wires and cap yellow ones. It’s too bad that the wiring diagrams that come with the unit didn't state this.

This unit says for instant start. Can I replace a regular ballast with this instant start model with no problem?

Asked by: Brian
This is a rapid start ballast - we will correct the detail on the page to reflect the correct starting method. You can use this to replace your existing ballast, just ensure that you are following the wiring diagram printed on the ballast and that you are using the correct lamps that the ballast is designed to operate.

In my experience, NO! An employee of my local HD said yes. I bought one and installed it. Two days later it quit working. After confirming that neither the switch nor the tubes were the problem, I bought another one. A different guy at HD said it was a compatible substitute. The second one quit working after just a few hours.

Just installed the AmbiStar ballast to replace an RM-2S35-TP in a fixture containing two F40T12 bulbs. Works great for me.

Realized many of the how to videos on line made it seem more difficult to install. Bottom line - I just matched the colors up - capped all wires - and wallaa. Light works. Match red wire from ballast to red wire on fixture. Same with blue and yellow wires. Black & white match up. Make sure you get the right ballast for your fixture. Just hope it lasts as long as the original one did.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Slow to start, even with new Phillips tubes This ballast was purchased to replace a failed ballast in one of a pair of fixtures purchased from Home Depot several years ago when we discovered we needed electronic ballasts to work with a fancy new lighting control. Compared with the original ballast still working in the other half of the pair of fixtures, this ballast is very slow, struggling to come on for several seconds, even with new Phillips brand tubes. Thinking that the new ballast might be defective, I installed a second new ballast, but it starts just as slowly. Frustrated, I eventually did some research and discovered that the GE 2-Bulb Residential Electronic Fluorescent Light Ballast Model 61373 has received good reviews for starting instantly. Unfortunately, Home Depot does not carry this item but I found one at another store across town. Save yourself some frustration. Buy the GE product instead of this one.

Old ballast just started going bad and then quit. Was a concern since the flush mount double bulb florescents were 20 yeas old. New ballast was smaller and lighter than old but the HD descriptor helped to get just the right one. Had to comb through the bins at HD to find the right one. Install was east but did have to snip a plug and wire nut it instead. Works great. Also went to Phillips website to confirm which ballast was correct as the size rating is per the number of bulbs.
