Q:What size nails are recommended for attaching the 19/32" T1-11 directly into studs (shed build)? Should the nails be put into, or away from the grooves? And, any reason screws can't be used instead?

Answer This Question

A:  Any kind of nails will work. For my house, they used “Steel Panel board nails” (the search term to use for the Home Depot site, they come in several colors) For my shed I used 1-5/8” brown exterior rated screws. I stained the wood a medium brown and the screws blended in perfectly. I prefer non-galvanized so I don’t need to worry about stains, paints, or finishes interacting with the fastener coatings. Whether you opt for nails or screws, it doesn’t matter if you put the fasteners in the grooves or not, it is purely aesthetic. If you use nails make sure to use ring shank nails so they don't work loose.

A:  I used screws. I screwed into the joints where possible as well as into other areas of the panels.

        Answer This Question

A:  Shari, We do not recommend installing T1-11 siding horizontally as the moisture and rain will collect in the grooves and cause delamination.

            5/8” T1-11 ROCKS!
I’ve use these on my home for 30 years. I just needed to replace 17 as it faces the west side and takes the blunt of the weather up here in the mountains of PA. The others are still holding really well. if I would’ve painted the house since last 14 years , I can pretty much guarantee that I would not have had replace those 17 boards. Lesson learned! I will now continue to paint my house every five or six years at least. These 5/8” T111 are awesome.

Spent over $200 on this siding. I bought wood sealer to put on this. I bought clear wood sealer because I liked the natural color of the wood. After it rained it started to bubble and come apart. What a complete waste of money very disappointed in the quality for sure. That's over $200 I'm out of now.
