Questions & Answers

Can you use this with a standard wall outlet. ?

Asked by: Dave
Yes it will work on a standard 30 amp 115 volt electric line. HOIWEVER remember it must be a dedicated line. Which means this compressor by itself, will use the full amperage of the wires under certain circumstances. Don't try to run the rest of your shop on the same circuit.

Where is this manufactured?

Asked by: TJ
The compressor is built in the USA with globally sourced parts (according to the label on the tank)

Surprisingly, the air compressor is fairly quiet compared to other air compressors that I have owned over the years. The compressor is somewhat easy to move around the garage with the heavy duty tires that come on the unit. The compressor charges extremely quick. The compressor has a tank and tool pressure gauge along with an on and off switch located front and center on the unit. Overall, this air compressor appears to be extremely heavy duty and very well built!!

It still uses an oil cooling system for the compressor, so besides the need for a typical line dryer, you must include an oil separator in the pressure delivery line. One that can trap the oil particles prior to entry into your air supply. Then remember to add tool oil to your tools prior to work. That being said, it was always a requirement with compressors used a decade ago so it should not be a surprise to any long time compressor users. The surprise to me is this compressor has a limit of developed air pressure of only 135 lbs.. This is a considerable let down when working on wheel lug nuts of a truck or the cast iron block of 'old Detroit iron'. Most impact wrenches need 150 to 175 lbs. to obtain full torque. These may not be the considerations for an average home owner, Who is just filling tires or doing minor painting around the house, but this is a much larger compressor, than the average home owner would need for light projects. When a compressor requires a dedicated electric feed line, you expect a compressor that will develop enough pressure to do all you can require of it. Yes the motor can be wired for either 110 or 220 volts, but the line pressure developed by the compressor, will not be changed by voltage.

Wow, what an awesome upgrade from my 15 gallon single pump air compressor – much quieter and cycles a lot less with the larger 30 gallon air capacity. I decided to try this Porter Cable air compressor and I am very impressed. While it has the same maximum 135 PSI pressure as my old compressor, the larger storage tank means it is running a lot less frequently to recharge the tank when I’m using air tools around the shop. I think characterizing it as portable is right on the edge of what you would want to haul around since it stands around 4’ high and weighs 165 lbs. My greater concern about hauling it around would be breaking off the brass drain petcock which sits right on the bottom of the storage tank and has around 3/8” clearance to the ground. If you were pulling this over rough terrain on a job site, it seems that it would be easy to break off the petcock (which I have done on my old 15 gallon compressor!). It might be possible to use larger wheels to increase the clearance however the rubber pads would also need increasing in size for the compressor to remain level if you decided to use larger diameter wheels. The tiny clearance also makes it quite difficult to open up the petcock to drain moisture. Getting it up and running is pretty simple – install the two air filters on the pumps and follow the break in instructions in the manual which is basically to run the compressor for 30 minutes with the petcock open. The on/off switch feels durable and the pressure gauges show the internal tank pressure as well as the line pressure which can be controlled using a rotary regulator to ensure the tool is getting the right pressure. In terms of air tools which this compressor can easily operate, there is a label on the side of the tank that shows inflation tools, air brushes, engine cleaners, grease and caulk guns, gravity fed paint sprayers, brad nailers and staplers, finishing and framing nailers, roofing nailers, ratchet guns, reciprocating saws, air screwdrivers and impact wrenches. The compressor lists a second set of air tools that are likely to be operable including cut off tools, air drills, die grinders and air hammers. Tool that this compressor doesn’t have sufficient CFM to operate include sandblasters, automotive spray guns and most types of air sander. For maintenance, there is a sight glass to check the compressor pump oil levels and overhaul kits available from Porter Cable which include replacement air filter elements etc. The compressor comes with a 2 year warranty on all the oil lubricated compressor parts and a one year limited warranty on everything else.

This air compressor is a beast that puts it over the top for functionality than other smaller compressors found in the 20 gallon range and below. Compressor is quick to come to pressure at about 135 PSI and has the CFM for moving air hog tools like impact and cutting wheel. Size and width is great and while it looks top heavy, still easy to move around. Only ding and I will not remove a rating star for it, is the drain valve is a little small and getting access and handling is somewhat cumbersome.

It was 99% assembled and only required the air filters to be installed. There is a quick start guide that runs you through the break-in process which was very easy. After the half-hour run I closed the drain-cock and let the compressor fill until it cut off. I left it for several days and monitored the air pressure and it didn't drop any that I could tell during that time. I installed an extended easy drain hose on it so I could keep this in the corner of my garage between my work bench and tool box and still be able to drain the tank. It is super quiet and it takes a about six or seven minutes to fill if the tank is empty. It doesn't move either while operating; my old compressor had to be strapped in place as it would try to walk out of the corner, this one stays put without any restraint. Overall this is a great compressor and with proper maintenance I suspect I will get many years of use from it.

The electric motor developed an internal rattle on the second time of use. I am waiting for it to explode. The drain valve is difficult to use, pliers required. It looks identical to the cheaper Husky except for the red color.

I bought this air compressor for my son-in-law and was wishing it was mine. I liked the 110/220 volt option. the up right 30 gallon tank, twin V cylinder and wheels are nice features. I trust the Porter Cable name as I am into woodworking also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Little Air Compressor I bought mine a few months ago, and it's been Great so far. The DB level is a lot better than my old compressor. Right now, I have it working on 110Volt but going to change it to 220V. Max PSI on mine is 155 and that's enough for for my 1500 Lb. Trike Lift. takes it right up, with No problems, Even though it's NOT a Two Stage but it is a Twin cyl. which helps keep it cooler and fill the tank faster then a Single Cyl. I WAS going to buy a 80 Gal 5hp Two stage, but after thinking about it, that was Overkill for what I REALLY needed. so,... all & all, this is a great Little Compressor !!!
