7 Amp 3-3/8 in. Deluxe Plate Joiner

Over a 40 year time span I have edge glued dozens of boards for various projects, but have done so without any type of joining tool. Facing the glue up of 20 or so oak stair tread returns to the stair treads I decided to try a biscuit joiner to see if it would make the process easier and results better. Oh my!!!! This tool is incredible!!!! After cutting slots in two practice boards, I used the joiner on my first stair tread and return. The machine performed flawlessly! The resulting joint is absolutely perfect! I’m kicking myself for not having purchased this Porter Cable plate joiner years ago. If you find yourself edge gluing boards from time to time, this tool will save you lots of heartaches and headaches, and will pretty much guarantee perfect joints. After reading hundreds of plate joiners, I decided to go with the Porter Cable, and I’m so glad I did! It’s an excellent machine!!! I am extremely satisfied!!!! Oh....the dust collector is completely worthless.......wouldn’t even attach to the joiner.

My Porter Cable Model 557 Plate Joiner (biscuit cutter) malfunctioned (Apr 2020). After cutting a few slots today, while running the tool spontaneously broke; approx. 20 small black tabs flew out, most broke off inside the tool. These must be the cooling fan blades. This occurred during routine use and there was no foreign object anywhere near the air vent. I bought it new and have cut only 100 slots with this machine. Until today I thought it was well made and I have always taken good care of it and stored it in its case.

Had been in search of a joiner for awhile. This product performs perfectly. Used it for the first time to join boards at a 30 degree angle and they joined up flawlessly. Would definitely recommend this product to all, including persons with little experience in woodworking.

After cutting the biscuit "grooves" on my planks, I had noticed that bringing the planks together was harder than I expected. I first blamed myself for trying to cut the grooves too quickly. But one day I noticed that the slots it cuts aren't parallel to the work surface. One side is 0.3 mm off on a ~2.5" slot width. I noticed that the fence pivots not on a fixed part of the device, rather, on a pair of plastic brackets that facilitate turning of the fence by circular "tongue and grooves", the tongues being on the plastic brackets and the grooves on the fence. And the brackets get fastened to the body of the joiner by a couple of screws each. Slightest movement of the brackets throws the adjustment of the fence off. Hoping that I could find something to adjust it, I opened the brackets only to see there is nothing to adjust. After putting the brackets back in place and closing closing them, the error had increased to 0.5 mm, almost 1/5 an inch. Very disappointing design. I couldn't find a way to calibrate or adjust the thing. Every other thing about the joiner was great - good design, good quality saw blade, good quality material and everything else. It's very surprising that they dropped the ball on design of the pivoting mechanism and connecting bracket.

I had the same model fir about 20 years. The new machine has a few improvements which should prevent a few problems with the old model. It a work horse and no shop should be without.
