Product Overview

For 18 years, Post Protector has provided simple, slide-on ‘barrier’ protection for in-ground posts. It works in conjunction with the chemical preservative as an important additional layer of protection against soil-dwelling and atmospheric decay fungi and insect infestation. It’s first important to understand decay. Many believe that moisture CAUSES decay. Moisture is not the cause of decay but is one of (3) conditions needed for decay to occur. The conditions: (1) Moisture, (2) Oxygen and (3) Suitable temperature. These conditions enable the soil-dwelling or atmospheric decay fungi, as well as termites and other subterranean insects, to feed on the wood fiber. So the Decay/Degradation of ground-contact wood is not CAUSED by moisture but by the action of wood destroying organisms feeding on the wood. The ‘chemical preservatives’ protection strategy is to ‘poison’ the wood fiber, rendering it an unsuitable food source for the wood destroying organisms. The downside to that approach is that all chemical preservatives eventually lose resistance to decay and insect infestation. Post Protector becomes the perfect complement to the pressure treated (or cedar) post by simply providing a physical "barrier" isolating the post so the wood-destroying organisms have NO access to the post.

can not remember if the hole was in the side @ the bottom or if we drilled them, but that is the instructions is to drill a small hole and we put white chat rock down so the drain will not get plugged if that makes sense. but yes they will drain & water will not stand in the sleeves. these worked perfect for our applications and think it will keep our poles good for many years.

The protector covers the part of the post that is buried. I used the 60" long protectors because my holes are 4' or a bit more deep. They come in a case of 6.

Assuming you can remove the dirt around the post, I don't see why not. If your post have a high level of chemical treatment you might be okay for years. There are a lot of variables.

Does this different from a regular pvc post sleeve?

Asked by nguyen27 June 18, 2019

I would think that a PVC sleeve would have a thicker profile. This material is quite thin, but not thin enough for rocks to puncture easily unless they are abused during installation. In my situation (a pole barn) the thin profile provided minimal, if non existent, interference with the girts and prevented them from protruding out from girts that were installed on the bare post above the top of the post protector.

Can it be snapped on an existing post or cut open easily and then wrapped and sealed around the post?

No, it cannot. The idea is to have a seamless protection against the ground elements. I would think that cutting it to wrap would defeat the functionality.

It doesn't simply slide in and out. Ours were so snug that we had to cut them to install, you'd have plenty of soil pressure. Besides that you lag it into the post. Yes it can support load. Are you installing a footing or planning for friction only? - if you're worried, you could always look at doing the couple foot section as most of the microbes you are protecting against are near the surface.

Great post protectors for Pole Barns, etc.
Customer review from homedepot.ca logo
I needed to replace 6 rotten posts on my pole building. Cut off well above rotten area and cleated on new in-ground posts. Installed these post protecters on each post prior to placing in ground. They seem to be great idea, fasten securely to post, have up-thrust design to keep post firmly seated. No more rotten posts. The only reason I did not give a 5 star was that they are a bit loose on the posts and the corners tend to flare out somewhat at each edge. Had to grind the concrete floor around the previous posts so these would fit in. A bit of work, but job is done now and very satisfied.

Post protector
Customer review from homedepot.ca logo
Installed perfectly when instruction followed. Would have preferred if material was a littler thicker (more rigid) for finished look above ground. Used thin backer rod and silicone to prevent water from running down post and into sleeve.

I'm hoping these will make my new 6x6 (Doug Fir, ACQ 0.60 pcf, FOHC) posts placed in concrete last longer. We'll know in about 40 years. That's the life I want for the retaining wall. I also coated the posts (3 coats) with Henry 107. The hardware that came with the covers is good quality and the contact at the company that makes these is friendly and helpful. I feel the price is a bit high - but if they make the wall last 15 years longer it is worth it.

So far so good. In my opinion, this is a great product. No one should ever sink a post in the ground or concrete without installing a post protector. That is unless you want to replace your post sooner than you expect. Average cost per post protector is approximately $25..... Cost of replacing a post on an established structure......? Cant beat the return on investment.
