The Power-Pipe’s performance has been tested in accordance with the CSA B55.1 standard and independently verified by Intertek. The Power-Pipe is safe for drinking water, requires no maintenance, has no moving parts, increases effective hot water capacity, extends water heater life, and can be used with any type of standard plumbing system and comes with a 10 year warranty. Furthermore, Power-Pipe technology is proven, practical, affordable, and in use in many thousands of homes. A Power-Pipe will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 1 ton/year per household in the average family of four.

If the idea is to extract heat from drain water as it falls down a vertical pipe, shouldn't it be heavily insulated? The copper water jacket will significantly radiate heat to the room without it.
Asked by: Gerald
If a Drain Water Heat Recovery unit is located within the heated space of the home, insulation isn't really necessary although it can't hurt to cover it if you choose to, as while a slight amount of heat loss may occur, it is only really happening when the shower or water flow is exchanging heat. On the other hand, if it is installed in an unheated space, I personally would recommend insulating the unit primarily to stop the formation of condensation, and secondary to minimize the potential for heat loss and or freezing potential depending on your climate and lifestyle.

I believe most people use these on shower drains to warm up the cold water coming to the shower, so less hot water is needed to have comfortable shower.
