Questions & Answers

i purchased the powermate prtt196e last week. queston, what grade of fuel should i buy? low, medium, or high?

Asked by: jn
I highly recommend that everyone use fuel w/out ethanol in it for all gas operated equipment like lawn mowers, power equipment, chain saws. They will last much longer and have less issues using this fuel. This is what they sell on the lakes for boats to use. It may be more expensive, but it what you should be using in your boats & power equipment.

Do you have to push it or does it move by itself when you push foward switch?
Asked by: Brooklyn
It moves by itself but you have to steer it and , depending on the ground conditions, requires some assistance in moving forward. It does take some effort.

I hated the construction of several of the higher priced models (belt driven to the tines). This little guy is gear-driven and I love her. I bought it after seeing a YouTube video a fellow posted of his being assembled and used for the first time. No, she doesn't have "features" aside from its counter-revolving tines and reverse drive. But she tears up ground as good as any BCS or hydraulic Berreto I've ever used (seriously); just not as wide. The soil I turned over was red clay. Deeply compacted, with a fresh, thick layer of grass on it. But she cut through it like a hot knife through butter. My only "complaint" is that I'm 6'3" and the handles are a bit lower for my reach. My back gets tired, but that is also likely attributed to the gut I developed NOT gardening!!!LOL That's what I get for not eating healthy. I definitely recommend this product.

What used to be an all day chore with my old front tine tiller, was accomplished in just a few hours with this machine. Starts easily with just a few pulls and is easy on gas. I till three large garden plots totaling about 4000 sq ft, and it was pretty easy. I initially till at maximum depth setting, and then go over the plots again at a shallower depth before planting. The machine is fairly easy to control, though it is not effortless by any means. However, I did not feel like I had wrestled a bear after using it. Highly recommend this tiller.

I am on my 2nd one of these and they both have leaked oil right out of the box. The first dumped almost the entire bottle on my shop floor in a few days. I never used it. I took it back and got another one, checked the oil level from factory (empty), made sure I didn't overfill (shouldn't be possible with the 19 oz supplied for a 20 oz capacity) and low and behold, drips forming on the lower belt cover again. I know I am not doing anything wrong and my area was shipped a batch of poor builds. I won't try a 3rd one.

The first time I picked it up from Home Depot, parts were missing which was a store error and the staff was very professional about replacing it. The second unit would not start after numerous attempts so I returned it, again the staff was able to replace it with no issues. The third unit started up but when I started to till it went about 20 feet and stopped. Once restarted it went another 10 feet and would not restart. I took it back to Home Depot for a full refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Powerful Tiller! When you first receive this, cut the sides of the box and fold down all 4 sides. This tiller weighs a couple hundred pounds, and you will not lift it out of the box. In fact, the instructions say to cut the sides of the box, but unfortunately the instructions are in the box. This is my 3rd Powermate yard tool, and I have yet to be disappointed. I also have their edger and their cultivator. This tiller came much more assembled than the instructions say. The clear instructions lead you step by step, and fortunately some of the steps are already done, so you need not do them. This is a HUGE plus, but Powermate needs to update their instructions to lessen any confusion. It comes with the oil, but you MUST fill the crankcase before starting. It does take the entire bottle of oil which was shipped with it. This is a direct drive tiller, so there is NO neutral per say. The tiller does NOT roll when not started. Eliminating the typical gear box is how many yard equipment manufacturers are going, to give the option of owning powerful machines at a lesser price point. Just keep this is mind when choosing your equipment. To "roll" this equipment, there are quick disconnect pins on the rims, so the rims are not locked to the axle. Once rolled when not started, you must put the pins back into the rim/axle. This machine started on the second pull, which was impressive. Some reviews say how hard equipment is to start after sitting for months. Do yourself a favor if any machine is going to sit for months on end. They are proper storing techniques for everything, and usually involves an additive to the fuel. I've yet to have a problem starting anything when properly stored. What I feel would be an improvement on this machine is quick disconnect pins for adjusting the handles. As it is currently, it's 2 bolts with nuts. I found when tilling, I had to move the handles to another position since the tiller was lower. It's a little bit of a nuisance to unbolt and re-bolt for adjustment. This machine does have reverse! A huge plus. I attached some pictures of tilling HARD soil ii a 20' x25' area. I tilled it each way, and took about an hour total. Impressive to say the least. This is a highly recommended product.

Pretty basic unit no frills single speed. on/off switch fell apart first day (pictured). I have to use a screwdriver to shut off. I am sure the switch may be covered under the warranty. But, I would just get another junk switch. I will buy a good one and put it on. I really wished I had spent a few dollars more and got a better quality tiller.

The soil hadn't been worked for 5+ years and is really tough as it is full of clay. This thing went through it like butter! It is very easy to maneuver, my wife can handle it just as well as I. We have owned it for 3 weeks, are very pleased with this tiller and would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat. It's got an easy start, and adjustable handles to fit whoever is using it. So far there is nothing we have found that we dislike. If anyone is looking for a affordable, quality machine, this is the one for you!
