Questions & Answers

How long is the 8" auger? In other words, how deep can it drill a hole?

Asked by: Rick
I drilled this hole down to 30". Last part of the video doesn't show me going all the way down but it's very close. You will be bumping up against the bottom of the motor and it will work your back.

43cc Earth Auger Powerhead with 8 in. Bit is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 253.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great time and Labot Saver I looked at several power augers and chose the Earth Auger over the others. When I opened the box, I was impressed with the quality of the packaging. I found no damage or missing parts. During the easy assembly process, I removed the spark plug and dipped it into the fuel mix, that I made (using the provided 2 cycle mix) and reinstalled the spark plug. (this is not part of the Manufactures instructions) I finished the assembly processed and filled the fuel tank. Next, I pumped the fuel primer until the plunger felt firm (4 to 5 times) and turned the ignition switch OFF. Pulled the starter cord once. Set the choke to full on and the Starter switch to ON. Pulled the starter cord one time and the engine started on the first pull without any problem. I use this auger in clay soil, with small rocks and shale. Works well, but if you get to a sizable rock, you will have to clear the stone, using a spud bar or a post hole digger. Having used other power auger in the past, I find the Earth Auger's performance is what I expected for the size of the unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real time saver I bought this in store to start a fencing project at home. I wasn't about to attempt this with regular post hole diggers! Out of the box, all I had to do was attach the auger with the provided.hardware and tools. 10 minutes to review the manual and out to the fence line. This auger started the first time and each time afterwards. I was astonished by the power this unit has! Some holes took only a minute to dig, while some harder ones, maybe 5 minutes. This unit had plenty of power to tackle most of the project. A few holes had clay that was too hard and the auger just shaved the clay. That would have taken a good while to dig. I soaked those holes and that worked much better. One serious word of advise - wear a good pad on your left thigh. This thing is really strong, and if you hit rocks or veins of clay, it's hard to prevent it from kicking back and smacking the tar out of your leg.

I purchased from Home Depot, went home and set up Auger right away. The set up was pretty smooth, only took about 20 minutes to read over manual and set up. The Auger was very weak, and would not tear through the smallest of roots or clay dirt. My girlfriend brought her shovel over and went right through them and dug the hole faster than the Auger. I was able to get about 6 inches into the soil before Auger would clam up. I backed out the auger, cleared the loose dirt many times. I also tried 4 or 5 holes, and after the 5th hole, all with very little progress, it was an easy decision to return to the store, right away!

Great quality tool , easy to start and easy to handle; as expected, if the ground where the hole is being dug has good size rocks & roots, it will not go through. Auger cannot get through roots or vines or lattice root systems. It's great to get the job started, but one needs manual power digger & other tools to get through larger rocks & roots. I had 48 holes to dig, many went rather smoothly and the others needed more manual labor. It was a very valuable tool to get through this big digging job. Just be careful that you hold the auger firmly against your hip/body to prevent kickbacks that will give you black & blues...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good little unit Building a wood picket fence, I bought this unit after digging several holes by hand. It works as advertised, sometimes a little hard to start, but all in all, very pleased with this purchase. I always seem to hit either a tree root or hard clay while digging. The Auger will torque upon impact with a tree root. I’ve learned to keep my left hip or left knee against the handle to help absorb some of the torque twist. Let the auger do the work, and keep lifting it out of the hole to clear discharged soil. I also had to use a hammer drill a couple of times in hard clay, once the clay was broken up, it was back to the auger to finish hole to desired depth. Todate, I’ve dug 17 holes down to 24 inches with this auger, some holes dug in 3 minutes or less, a couple took much longer due to striking clay. I recommend this auger, if digging by hand, your back will thank you after digging the your first 10 holes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A power house for the size I worked in the electrical distribution field for over 24 years, so digging with an auger was not anything new to me. I installed two fences about 22 years ago and hand dug all 135+ postholes. When I started on my current fencing project, I said no way I will hand dig approximately 70 holes again. (22 years older) I shopped around and before making any purchase I had read the only two reviews at that time, one was very negative and one positive. All I can say is WOW, for the buck this is one little power house of a digger. I live in NC and I am digging mostly in red clay and this thing goes through it with no trouble. Now don’t take that as it will go through it like a hot knife through melted butter. After digging my first 19 holes I estimate it took approximately 15-20 minutes per 8” x 24” hole. That is not bad; just try that with a hand set of posthole diggers. Well worth the money and saved time! The only improvement I could see is, it needs a reverse. If there is a large root on the side of a hole it may cork screw by it and can be difficult to pull the auger back out of the hole. Again it still beats hand digging.

I've read good and bad reviews and decided to give it a shot. If you've ever dug post holes by hand, you'll know that it's not easy. Even though my property wasn't perfect, it got the job done. It was tough on a cold start but, what 2 cycle engine isn't... If you let it warm up for about 5 minutes its good to go. If you get it stuck, or force it then you will damage it. With some common sense, you'll get the job done with this model.
