The Powermate PM4500 is a great inexpensive portable generator. I've been wanting a backup generator for years, especially as I once had to live with no power for over a week once due to a bad storm. I cannot stress enough though, if you are in the market for a generator, please do your homework on how to operate one responsibly. The electrical power they put out can kill a lineworker or neighbor if you accidentally backload the main line. This is a pull start gasoline generator, that has a 5 gallon fuel tank, that says will run for 19 hours on a 25% load. Two of my favorite features are the gas shutoff valve (turning is off this way, will keep your carb free of gas between uses), and the COsense automatic shutoff if it senses a buildup of CO in the intake. The unit also has a gas guage, low oil pressure shutoff, and GFCI circuits. The unit is also much quieter than I thought it would be, less that our Toro push mower. The 4,500 starting watt, and 3,600 running watts are important numbers to learn. A typical refrigerator or freezer will need 2,100 watts to start, and 700 watts to run. CFL lights are usually 14 watts, while LEDs average about 9 watts. Check your furnace manual for the specifications it has. I suggest planning accordingly if you are looking to power items in your house for a long outage. You can alternate powering a refrigerator and separate freezer, if you don't open the doors very much. This generator is also powered by a GENERAC motor, which will last you a long time with routine maintenance. I have one that's been on my power washer for the last 5 years, and still runs like new. I highly recommend this generator.

Powermate Generator This PM4500 Powermate generator has a Generac OHV engine. It provides 4500 starting watts and 3600 running watts. Out of the box, it was easy to assemble. Attach wheels and feet to the frame, and attach the handle. Add the oil (provided) and add gas (not provided), and it started on the first pull for me. Ever since it has also started easily - first or second pull. The handle locks down or locks in the up position, and makes it easy to roll the generator around where needed. The generator runs at a constant speed and is as noisy as you would expect for a gas engine of that size. My first project using the generator was with my circular saw, cutting some 2x4’s. The generator easily handled the starting and stopping of the circular saw. With the large 5 gallon fuel tank, documentation says it will run for up to 19 hours at 25% load. I have not had the need to run it for that long yet, but I am pretty happy with this generator. It has the power I need, and yet is portable and easily moved with its handle and wheels.

Last summer, I was one of the lucky midwesterners who had to endure almost two weeks without power due to devastating storms. After that experience, I vowed to never again be without a backup power system. But being retired and on a fixed income, I had to choose my generator with affordability in mind. So I've opted for this Powermate PM2000, that features a Generac 98 cc OHV engine that delivers a reliable 1400 watts of power for up to 14 hours at a time. As a senior homeowner, I appreciate that this powerhouse is at a weight I can move around easily, and its POWERDIAL, an easy-to-use integrated off/run/choke knob, makes the recoil startup as easy as starting a lawn mower. There are a few features missing from this base model that I wish it had -- a COsense monitor to constantly check for carbon monoxide and Overload Protection. But those features are only available on bigger, more expensive models in the PowerMate line. For the price of the PM2000, though, I can overlook those omissions. The PM2000 does have a low oil shutdown feature, however, as well as a large, easy-to-read fuel gauge. It also has a built-in screen that filters your fuel during a fill. Overall, the machine is very easy to maintain, with decent access to the oil reservoir and dipstick, the air filter, and the spark plug, arrestor, and fuel shut-off valve. In short, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to operate the PM2000 generator. This PowerMate includes a handy wattage guide, to help you determine what appliances and tools you can (and cannot) run on 1400 watts. Some of the things you can power with the PM2000 include: a microwave, a lamp, charge a phone, run a sump pump, even run a refrigerator if the need arises. (Of course, you have to make certain any two items you run together don't exceed 1400 watts.) All in all, I find the PM2000 to be an affordable, well-built generator at an excellent price-- perfect powerhouse for every prepared homeowner!

You wont have to worry about this generator plowing away because this sucker is heavy! Other than it being heavy, it was easy to assemble what few parts had to be added and cam with the tools required to do so. It also came with oil for the 224cc with over head valve Generac engine. It doesn't have electric start but started up on the second pull and ran great.

I needed a medium size generator as a backup for what seems to be an ever-increasing number of power outages here in Virginia Beach. Coastal storms, equipment failures, and even salt spray on overhead wires can knock out power for hours or days. I just want to keep the refrigerator cold and use a few appliances until the power is restored. The 4500 starting watts and 3600 running watts this generator produces should be adequate for my emergency needs. It has several features that make the generator easy to use. The off-run-choke settings are in one easy-to-use dial for simplified starting. The five-gallon fuel tank with a fuel gauge on top delivers long run times without refueling. The CO sensor provides protection from carbon monoxide. The built-in hour meter tracks total run time for oil change intervals. It has a sturdy steel frame and solid wheels that makes it easy to maneuver. The owner’s manual has the wheel and handle assembly instructions, plus the operational, maintenance, and safety warning information. The instructions are well written – but some of the illustrations are too small to properly show the details. It took me about 30 minutes to unpack and assemble everything. Inside the box is a quart of motor oil and funnel, plus the two metric wrenches needed for assembly (a really nice touch). All portable generators also generate some noise when running, but this one has a large muffler and is fairly quiet. Actual noise level will vary depending on the electrical load and location of the unit. There are four 20 amp. outlets and one 30 amp. twist lock outlet for connecting multiple items. Another nice touch is the wattage reference guide in the owner’s manual which lists the running watts for many common appliances and power tools. This is useful information listed all in one place.

I got this yesterday and just completed setup and initial usage trial. It works fine but I had a couple issues. But this unit has a number of nice touches. There is a fuel cutoff which is nice for storage. I like to turn the gas off and let it die that way so the carberator doesn't have gas in it during storage. It came with a funnel for the oil and wrenches for assembly - actual wrenches not stamped steel non functional nonsense. It has an hour meter which should be useful for maintenance and it has a CO detector which shuts if off if CO is detected. Gas tank is large and fill is right on top. Two 20 amp outlets and a 30 amp plug to tie it to your camper or house. I plan to put in a manual transfer switch and will normally use that. But today I tested the two outlets neither of which worked at first. But they are apparently GFCI and that was tripped on both. When I figured that out the generator worked fine. I tested it on a small 1500W space heater that draws over 10 amps and it was no issue. The other issue I had was with the welds versus the washers used in installing the wheels. The washers are nice and thick but the welds stick out too much for you to get the pin in to hold the wheel. So I cut a bit off the washers with a grinder and it was fine. If you don't have a grinder you could use a thinner washer. Should not be an issue ever again so I am not downgrading it for this. I am including a picture of the wheel area, the modified washer, and the funnel and tools.

If you are the type to go camping or tailgating, then the Running-Watt 1,400-Watt Manual-Start Gasoline-Powered Portable Generator, 49 ST/CSA by Powermate is for you. With the 2000 starting watt and 1400 running watt, it is more than powerful enough to run any of your outdoor equipment off of. Also in case of a power failure at home, it's powerful enough to keep the refrigerator running so there will be no more spoiled food to throw out. And I've got to say, for a generator, in my opinion it is more on the quiet side, not silent, but low enough that you won't have to scream when talking. The generator came fully assembled out of the box with the exception of removing a few packing brackets from the frame, there is no worries about assembling. Just fill with the engine oil included and gas it up and you're ready to go.

The Powermate PM3800 generator from Generac is a beast! It's engine with a displacement of 212cc it is easily one of the most powerful generators on the market and is equipped to handle a heavy load. It comes fully assembled so you can get to work as soon as you add gas and oil. The frame is solid and provides a great handle to help move it around. The 5 gallon gas tank enables over 20 hours of run time. It has a fuel gauge as well so you always know how much gas you have without having to open the tank to look. The oil is easy to add with the included funnel. Starting the generator is straightforward. Turn the switch to “cold start” and yank the pull start, like a lawnmower. Once it’s running, change the switch to “run” and you’re good to go. (This switch is used in place of a choke.) The first time I used this it was around 20 degrees outside and I was able to get this powered up with ease. It has four outlets that allow you to power multiple pieces of equipment simultaneously. I ran my miter saw with power from this generator and it worked perfectly. I was kind of expecting it to be a little weaker but that wasn’t the case; it cut boards with the same power I’ve always gotten from it being plugged into a normal outlet. Using a reference from the movie, "Spinal Tap," This generator goes to 11. It outperforms many other generators and I’d definitely recommend it for any large job where power is unavailable.

On our property out in the country (aka hills) we decided to get a generator due to frequent power outages and for power for tools that are sometimes needed around the property. We decided to get the Powermate Running-Watt 3,000-Watt Manual-Start Gasoline-Powered Portable Generator, 49 ST/CSA as it seemed to meet the needs we have. Also when we eventually put a trailer on the lower property this will be a great source of power when needed especially if we use it to travel. We were very surprised and happy to find out that this is apparently manufactured by Generac which is an amazing company with amazing products. It was very well package in the box so as to avoid any damage. It weighs just under 100 pounds so it is lightweight for what it is. While there is no wheel or handle included it does seem to have a spot to attach them so I will see if they are available. It does come with oil, a funnel and a spark plug tool so essentially it is ready to use straight away if you have fuel on hand. I really like the fact that it shows where the exhaust comes out and the direction of flow so you can avoid putting it in a position that may not be good for what it is around. It has an easy to see thru window with a fuel gauge so no guessing. It also has a meter to track the hours so no more trying to remember for maintenance reasons. They included instructions are very thorough. There are also covers over the outlets so that when they are not in use they are protected from dirt and debris. There are four 120 volt outlets. With each set having a reset switch as well as one for the entire panel. It has a 3 position power switch; off, run and cold start. It also includes a 3 year warranty which I think is pretty good though I am sure we will not need it. They have made this generator very user friendly. It seems well built and sturdy so I expect it last for many years to come. I think this would be not only well suited for our type of needs but also jobsites that require power for tools, lighting etc.
