Nice Stain.... This is a Semi-Solid stain and waterproofing sealer, Great for stockade fence to give it a rustic grey weathered look while holding a nice shine and sealing the wood so it can last a long time. also giving it UV protection. Works well on outdoor furniture as well. It is oil based so use gloves and any cleanup is with mineral spirits or turpentine. This can be applied with a brush, rag, deck sprayer

Love this stain!!!
First time user but have used other oil stains for decades. It was recommended by the fence builder. Yes it can be hard to mix up settled solids on the bottom, but it is not the fault of the product how long it may have sat on the store shelf! Do yourself the favor of first putting four holes in the gutter with a nail after opening to let stain drain back into the can. Mix the product with a stick to the extent that you can. Next, get a second can or pail and pour half of it out. Now if there is a stubborn layer on bottom of the can you can work it loose with the paint stick without splashing it out. Then pour it back and forth and use stick to evenly mix. Stir FREQUENTLY while applying. I have a lot of fence to do, but little by little it is looking beautiful and it will age better than unprotected wood!

The Preserva Wood 1 Gal. Driftwood Gray Semi-Solid Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer is an exceptionally high quality product that gives the homeowner or business a range of options. We chose to keep the stain and sealer more opaque as it matched the painted posts on our footbridge. We did experiment and this product looks equally nice more translucent when wiped before drying. It applied evenly and completely giving us a professional look. We heartily recommend this product for anyone looking to finish an wood project.

Don't waste your time and money
I've never written a bad review on a product, but I've never worked with a product this bad. The can was shook in the store, then I mixed it at home, because I know how stains get. When I brushed it on the wood, it looked like the color separated from the oil. So disappointed with this product.

The dark and light areas in your pictures indicate that either the stain was not mixed properly, or it was not able to penetrate into the wood you were trying to stain. It's always important to test a small area for penetration and color satisfaction prior to staining your entire project. If you need assistance, please contact us at info@preservaproducts.com and we will be happy to help you with your project.

I requested he "Preserva Wood 1 gal. Driftwood Gray Semi-Solid Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer", for two projects that I have in mind. The first one is a wooden artwork which has been outside on my screened porch wall for several years and its back is starting to show signs of deterioration, and needs to be resealed and protected. The second one is to seal and protect the wooden handles of my all my garden tools. This sealer comes with very good instructions printed on the can label. I believe this is an excellent product, I like it and I recommend it. I love this Driftwood Gray Semi-Solid exterior wood stain and sealer. I read some of the negative posted reviews and I don't think they followed the directions on the can. A few reviewers had stated that there was virtually no color when they applied it but I'm sure they didn't mix or have the can shaken before applying. This stain absolutely needs to be shaken when you buy it at Home Depot and again when you're ready to use it if it's been more than a couple of days. You also have to use a paint stirrer to continue to mix it every 10-15 minutes while you're applying it on your wood. This step will keep the oil base and pigment mixed together so you get the color intended. Make sure you power wash your deck or wood item FIRST and let it dry before staining. I used this stain on a new deck that I built in my back yard 18 months ago which leads up to my shed. I used about 1/3 of the gallon on an 8x10 deck with one coat. This stain is meant to penetrate the wood. Do not over apply because it will leave a glossy and/or tacky surface. One of the things I think is important is to use a good brush made for oil-based stains. I purchased a Wooster 4" Bravo Stainer brush at Home Depot for around $15.00 and cleaned it with mineral spirits when finished. If your wood was previously sealed or painted, it MUST be stripped and/or sanded before applying this stain because it needs to penetrate the wood. Do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hours. I really like how this stain is semi-transparent which allows the wood grain to show through. I've included several pictures so you can see the color and steps needed to get the great results that I got!

I just can’t believe that this is the same bench that I was going to throw away! Preserva Wood Stain and Sealer definitely helped give my bench a new life. We have no idea how old it is but the bench was here when we bought the house last year. After a day of power washing I thought that I would see what happens to this crusted weather-beaten moldy old bench. To my surprise the wood underneath was still in relatively good shape so I went to work layering on the first coat of Preserva Driftwood Gray which was absorbed immediately due to the old thirsty wood. Even though one coat gave it a pleasant weather-beaten look, the following day I added another coat which added another layer of protection. The instructions advised that I use a good quality brush but I used an inexpensive foam brush which worked just fine for this project. We just had a rain storm so I took a photo to show how the water beaded up and didn’t affect the wood at all. My new bench will be displayed in a place of honor in my front yard to show off how my trash just became a treasure. Note: Other reviewers said that they had difficulty blending the oil stain in the can. I turned the can over several times before opening and stirred often even when using the stain and managed to have no problems.

The Preserv Wood stain and sealer glides on easily with a paint brush. It dries overnight but smells for a couple days until completely cured. It looks great and protects our pressure treated wood from moisture and other harsh elements. I used this stain in high traffic areas which we walk on often. I kind of made a mistake of the color choice but after having it applied and dry, I find it is very nice anyway. Once removing the paint from my deck, I may use this same color and product to re-stain our backyard deck. The weather has not cooperated for painting due to excessive rain and storms but once breaks I will be using this stain on a few additional outdoor projects that need protecting as well. I would recommend this product and would/will most likely buy more as the deck and other small projects will exceed the gallon for sure.

I'm shocking myself with this review. I've used Preserva Wood Sealer/Stains before and I'm totally surprised by my less-than-favorable results this time. Some of the story is in the pictures, so here's the rest of the story. To start, I built a trellis from cypress. Normally, I'd let this age naturally but I thought I'd try a color-coordinating stain since it'd be so prominent in my garden. Problem #1 - I couldn't decipher the date code on the can but the solids had settled so badly to the bottom that I had to empty the 'flowable' carrier out of the can and chisel the solids off the bottom! Then I return everything to the can and, using my cordless drill and a paint stirrer attachment, blended the mix for over an hour. After that, I was satisfied with the mix. Problem #2 - using a brush, it applied fine ... or so I thought. Followed instructions to the letter; however [a] it took three days to dry and [b] the finish was not uniform. Now cypress isn't like maple or pine; I find it strikes very evenly almost all the time. But not in this case. Could it be that the material was "past it's prime"? I've never had that happen ... even with custom mixes after five years. Since it's "sealed" and the instructions say "no second coat", I might just bring it back into the shop and spray it with an oil-based exterior paint.

Thank you for posting the great pictures of your project! In those pictures, the Driftwood Gray looks exactly the way it should! Other customers should be able to determine if Driftwood Gray is right for them by the appearance in your pictures. Driftwood Gray is a SEMI-SOLID stain, which means that it will give the most "hide" of a penetrating stain, so that you can still see the grain of the wood, but not a solid stain or paint. Some of your drying and application issues relate to your use of cypress, which is a hardwood. Most uses for our Driftwood Gray include fences, decks, and wood sided homes, using woods such as redwood, cedar and southern yellow pine.

The key to this stain is that your wood needs to be porous by sanding or a strong power washing first. The stain needs to be absorbing into the wood for it to look proper. I tried to use the stain on new yellow pine boards. The stain was not compatible with the type of pressure treatment that it had (MCA-C with BARamine) and it rolled on more like paint and did not seep in. The result was a streaky finish. It still did turn the pressure treated wood gray and looked fine from a distance. There are stains out there that will work for pressure treated wood. This is not one of them. When I used it on older porous wood, the finish was much more uniform. Also keep in mind that this will not look like a paint as it is transparent so you will see the imperfections under the stain. Another thing I was not extremely pleased with was that a lot of the grey coloration was stuck at the bottom of the can and appeared to be hardened and dried. I could not get that portion to mix with the rest of the can.
