Is coconut roll safe to use as a liner in plastic tray to grow microgreens?

I expected it to be a lot thicker. It’s difficult to get to spread out. I hope after all the work that it lasts longer than 1 year! I should have ordered 2 as I have 2 flower boxes (I’m hoping for several years use out of it!).

The Pride Garden Products 40 in. x 20 in. AquaSav Coco Roll has a layer of plastic that runs down the middle. The plastic between the layers of fiber is used to help maintain moisture for plants between watering. But the plastic is only in the center of the 20 inches. I don't currently have a roll so I can't tell you how wide the plastic is between the fiber layers, but it did not go to the edges. The video only show the liner for hanging baskets, not the liners for window/deck planters (long & narrow ones). You said your cedar planter box is 4 1/2 feet (54 inches) long, coco roll is 36 in. long. The planter is 2 ft. or 24 in. high plus 16 in. deep, but the coco roll is only 20 inches wide. You will need 2 or more rolls and have to cut several. With patching the fiber liner in the planter box there would be several places where water will come in contact with the wood. I would consider a different method. Whichever method you choose be sure to make an opening through the holes in the box. There are several YouTube ideas and how to line with plastic. You can search “waterproof liner for planter box” or “how to line a wooden planter box.” Good luck.

I have a planter that is 24h x 54L x 8x (inches)

The line should cover the bottom of the planter with an inch or two up the sides. If necessary, the liner can be cut to fit smaller or larger planter bottoms. If you put holes in the planter's bottom do not make them too large where the water runs out quickly. The liner needs time to soak up the water. If you do not put holes in the planter check the soil for moistness before adding more water so the roots don't rot. You can think of the Coco Roll like shelf / drawer liner, the roll is basically flat when unrolled. Your planter is 54 inches long and 8 inches wide. The Coco Roll's width is 2 1/2 times wider than needed. Cutting the roll in half length-wise would give you two coco liners 40 in. x 10 in. Wide enough to give an inch up each side. Put one of the halves in your planter then using the second piece cut a length to finish lining the bottom. An inch or two overlap would be fine.

Yes, as long as you overlap any joints well the soil should not escape.

Hi! does this mean you get two rolls? One for the bottom of your container with the AquaSav and one wo for the sides?

Answer

Hi Pat. This product is just one 40 in. x 20 in. AquaSav™ Coco Roll and it comes as one sheet of coco. We recommend that you measure your container carefully to ensure you have enough coco.

My tomatoes are really liking this
I cut this and placed it in the bottom of redwood planters http://www.homedepot.com/p/Hollis-Wood-Products-22-in-Square-Redwood-Planter-Box-12028/204371110. I transplanted some tomato seedlings to the planters and they are growing beautifully. It is obvious the coco roll is holding onto more moisture as I don't have to water as often (I live in So Cal where it is hot and dry). Very pleased with this and now I wish I had put it in the bottom of all my containers!

Difficult to cut and fit to different planters. Not very manageable if it's not rolled out flat on the ground or simply laid flat in a planter.

I was surprised to see how thick it was, but pliable. Once I had it formed to fit my plant space, I poked a hole in the bottom of it with scissors to ensure water drainage. So far, so good !!!
