Questions & Answers

How do I install this lock

Asked by: Terri
Terri, Installation is very easy once the old lock is removed. The hole in the door or drawer will typically have a "flat side" which keeps the lock body from turning when you turn the key. The new lock fits right into this hole and has a fork shaped retainer that fits a slot on the body of the lock to hold the lock in place. You put the lock in from the front, and slide the fork retainer into the corresponding slot and you are done. I would advise putting a piece of masking or duct tape on the front of the lock to keep the cylinder in the lock body before you start so the lock cylinder does not come out of the body. There are 2 different slots on the body to accommodate different door thicknesses so pick the one that keeps the lock tight to the door. You may need a pair of pliers to get it all the way in the slot after you start it with your fingers. The cams that come in the package attach to the rear with the nut provided so you take the nut off , install the cam and tighten the nut. (be sure to get the cam square hole over the corresponding square on the rear of the lock before tightening it.) Pick a cam that is close to the shape of the old one , but if you don't have the old cam its no big deal to put on a different one

This does NOT fit the standard USPS L 1172C size lock in use on most community mailboxes. It looks nearly identical which is why I bought it except it is a circular shape, whereas the USPS L 1172C has a notch in it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lock for outside 16-count cluster mailbox I was satisfied with the $7 S4533 lock (bigger diameter nickel face similar in size to the C9100 and easy movement) when searching for our first new lock in 2015 to replace our old lock age 41 years. Some neighbors in our (16 single family home) cluster had already installed the C9100 USPS-L-1172C CompX National lock with a bold nickel face that started my search in 2015 to find the C9100 at a low price, which I finally did from Zoro Tools for $10 (zero shipping charge) Dec 2015. Most sites "pirate" on shipping charge. So now the S4533 is our backup lock. Its 5 cams square mounting hole fit the C9100 exactly. Our mailbox door hinge is on the right with the lock on left-centered, so a cw or ccw lock works on our cluster with the cam despite what the internet suggests. The S4533 cam (one of 5) that we used was a bit long, but worked just fine. The S4533 that we purchased was ccw, and our old lock was cw. The C9100 is cw, and the cams are interchangeable with the S4533. The C9100 comes with no cam, so its a challenge to find the shortest one that works. It's amazing of what is not provided in lock specs in general online or not, but what did you expect for hardware in America; some do have data sheets. My wife liked the appearance and movement of both the S4533 ccw and the C9100 cw. You will need a spacer to make the mounting clip sturdy against the mailbox door; I used two double-D washers (C9100). Without spacers the barrel will be loose. I see that my neighbors' mailbox doors are a tad loose; slightly bend the cam to fix this; but I did not have to bend the cam I selected; it fits tight with good lock/unlock movement. WD40 inside the lock barrel, the barrel threads, the key teeth, the cam. WD40 seasonally.
