Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. It is easier to have the original key to open the lock when rekeying your lock with this kit. If you are familiar rekeying locks, you can work to take apart your lock with out a key. Prime-Line cannot assist you with this.

All my locks are Kwikset. But one of them has smart key. Will this work with SmartKey too?
Asked by: Sam
You will not need the pins in the kit for the smart key lock, but you can use the new key to set the smart key lock to open with it but you need the Smart Key little tool and that locks current key to do it yourself. lacking both those, take the Smart Key lock to your HomeDepot store and they should have at least ONE person (may be more a 9-5 type and NOT til 10PM though - ask/plan ahead...). Service was FREE at my local HD store, So you will still have pins to do 5 NORMAL locks. If you are lacking keys for any of the "normal" locks, you can disasemble them as others have posted by carefully removing the thin cover above the springs in the cylinder's pin chambers and dump all current springs and pins out that way, OR remove the rear clip holding the plug in place, and buy some curved shims and an UNCUT KW1 blank and shove the blank into cylinder all the way in and then slide the shim into the very thin gap between the plug and the cylinder body from the rear at the location where the pins are. Be careful since the shim stick is very thin and you can cut yourself easily with it. Best squeeze its flat slightly curved surface between thumb and finger as you shove it gently in, if you don't buy the expensive tool to clamp the shim into. It will STOP when it hits the rear pin that has been shoved way up by the inserted blank key. Now carefully pull the key out slowly and you may have to wiggle the shim in and out a VERY TINY amount as you slowly back that blank out lest it keep the pins from dropping to where that pin chamber's bottom pin is lowered on the ramp at the front of the key to where the shim is at the gap between the top and bottom pin. You can then slide the shim in between those two pins and get it to the next pin chamber and keep doing that until you have all 5 pin chambers with their top pins above the shim and the bottom pin below. The shim being AT the shear line between the plug and the cylinder means that there is NOTHING then left to keep the plug from rotating in the cylinder, so ROTATE it by turning the key perhaps a quarter turn so no shim is still needed to keep the top and bottom pins separated. NOW once you have that picture in mind, realize that as you were backing out the blank key to do the front pin pair, the whole plug could have tried to slide out as you backed the blank key out after shimming the front most pin chamber! DON'T let that happen - it could be a disaster for you. KEEP a finger on the front of the plug and keep in tight in the cylinder and NO you actually need not shove the shim forward for that last front pin chamber but can instead while holding the plug from sliding out the front, instead try rotating the plug as you slowly back the blank key out. Do this in a wiggly trial at rotation as simply twisting hard will bind the pins at some height and not let their gap between them get to the sheer line as the key is being slowly backed out. Once the plug is rotated say a quarter turn, pull the shim out and using the PLUG FOLLOWER in the kit you can now use it to chase the plug out while keeping the top pins and springs in place for use with the new bottom pins you load into the plug to match the new keying. With the new key and pins in the plug, the pins should be flush with its top surface - at the sheer line. With it set that way. you can use the plug to chase the plug follower back out the rear, else you MUST have the plug rotated so its pin chambers will NOT accidentally be under the WRONG cylinder pin chambers which will let the top pins be spring pushed into the wrong plug pin chamber leaving the plug only partially inserted and stuck so it can't go in all the way. Once the plug is in all the way rotate it so its pin chambers are under the cylinders ones and with NO key in there the top pins will drop down locking it correctly in place or with the key in it, hold the plug all the way in as you rotate it to its normal position and then keep holding the plug in as you extract the key. Then install the clip that keeps the plug from sliding in and out. This is actually all quite simple once you get familiar with how the lock works and the steps and options and issues you have.

How can you tell if your lock is a smart key lock?

Asked by: Jimmy
A smart key lock has a little hole next to the keyhole. No little hole...not a smart lock.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poor Quality Control As another reviewer commented, this particular kit had a "remover" tool which was too big for the lockset. I had used this kit (ordered one last year) and used it no problem. This time I could not get the tool in at all! I couldn't find my kit from last year until today, and I proved to myself that the tool in this year's kit is bigger (see photos). It is hard to tell, but that 1 mm or less makes all the difference. The kit that has the tool with the half circle shape at the large end is bigger. The "V" shaped end is smaller (last year's kit) and works. It is easy to see the difference when you put them end-to-end. If you get the wrong (defective) kit, it won't work. Hope this helps!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved a bundle over the years. I have used these over probably the last twenty years or so and have saved tons of money on lock smiths. There's a learning curve on your first, might take you up to a half hour or a little more, but after that you should be cranking them out in 5-10 min's each. Not for the extremely faint hearted but if you're in the least bit handy you should have no problems. For the people who say these kits are useless, flimsy metal tool for instance, they are not spending the time to read and understand the instructions. That metal tool is not a pry bar and it doesn't need to be. My only regret is they don't stock them in my local stores in Indiana where I now live.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to rekey the locks on your house After researching what it would take to rekey my new house, I bought this kit. Took about two hours to slowly work my way through 5 locks. This is for the mechanically inclined and patient. The instructions are good, but I recommend downloading the installation instructions for your exact lockset - this will make getting the lock cylinders out a much faster process. This kits gives you 3 new keys and enough pins for 6 locks. A bargain compared to hiring a locksmith, or even bringings all your cylinders to a shop for rekeying.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needs some modification to work properly The rekeying function of this product works fine and is very easy. The problem is with the removal of the cylinder housing of a Kwikset Entrance Lock. The "remover tool" is too wide to use as instructed and will not fit into the lock housing. It needs to be filed down slightly allowing it to fit inside per the instructions. And as others have pointed out, the disassembly instructions are very pooly written.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy, step-by-step instructions You can re-key up to 6 locks with this kit. Three new keys are provided. The instructions are easy to follow and no locksmith skills are necessary. I would recommend watching online re-keying videos before starting. It took me about 30 minutes to do 6 locks after reading the instructions and watching a few videos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy tool modification needed I bought two of these within the past few years. The older one, the metal tool, on the fork side had a square cut (as shown). The more recent purchase had a round cut. On the square cut version, I filed the inside notch (for a straight sharper outside edge) to make it work. The round cut version was too wide to fit in the hole (I'm sure it can be filed down to fit (per another review(I used my old tool))). :)

They should use blue for one of the 2.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This worked exactly as I needed. My house had builder installed kwikset locks and I added a Kwikset deadbolt to the garage door and wanted all the doors to open with one key. This kit had enough parts for 6 locks (I only needed 5). Also supplied were 3 keys that would open any of the new lock pins. Some skill was required to remove and replace parts, so it would help if one knew how simple locks are designed. Also the kit worked on 5-pin locks only, so you must know how many pins your Kwikset locks have.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worked fine, but pins were incorrect The kit itself worked well. I hadn't rekeyed a lock before, and the instructions helped me get through the first one. The rest went a lot quicker. My real problem with this set was that the instructions had the wrong pins for the key. With the pins in the right configuration I ran out of the pins I needed and had to buy a 2nd set to get the rest of the necessary pins. If the key matched the instructions, it would've been great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works Great After a Bit of Filing Be prepared to file down the remover tool to be able to fit into the cylinder housing. Once you get it to fit, it works like a charm and is pretty easy to reset the lock and rekey. I recommend only because it's the only tool that is easy to find for the Kwikset locks.

I had a mixture of Smartkey locks and standard locks. I re-keyed the Smartkey locks first by following the Kwikset Smartkey instructions via online. You will need a working key to re-key the Smartkey locks, therefore you do not need to re-pin the cylinder on them. I then followed the included instructions to re-pin the cylinders on the rest of the locks. This project took me about an hour, and I had 9 locks to re-key, 5 of which were Smartkey locks which didn't require the pins, the rest were traditional locks.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Maybe it works for you? First off: this kit is only for certain Kwikset locks. So, make sure your lock has the cylinder with 5 round tumblers. A flat inserting tool is provided to undo the cylinder. In my case that tool was too wide for the opening in the lock. I had to revert to small screwdrivers and fingermagic. Next time I will consider buying a new lock, provide the vendor with an existing key and let them do the change.
