Jsmc. That 1 in. x 3 in. SPF (spruce/pine/fir) board is generally too small to serve reliably as a full bed slat on its own — it will likely flex or sag under load. Stronger slats are usually at least 1×4 or thicker, or made of a denser hardwood, and are often reinforced with a center support. If you want to use 1×3 pieces, you’d need many of them spaced tightly and a very sturdy frame (especially under the mattress center) to prevent sagging.

This product has not had any preservative treatment added to the product and would likely not endure the outdoor environment for extended amount of time. If you are looking for an untreated product for the bench, I would suggest using cedar, as it's naturally resistant to rot and decay.
