A:  If this is the product then the Copper is plated plastic and the black is powder coated steel. The video shows UFP Industries and links to here. https://www.deckorators.com/en/Products/post-caps/post-point.aspx#/?color=06001424a9574368bf05c899793d48f8

A:  Hello Gp, Home Depot does carry a copper post cap through a different manufacturer. To locate it, type these keywords: "5 x 5 post cap copper", and you will find it.

A:  Hello Bug, From what we have seen, there are various products on the market that claim to keep birds from perching on posts, but they are very pointy, some highly reflective (mirrors even), and oftentimes have something else whirling around them. If that is what keeps a bird away, it is unlikely that this more mundane style of cap will do the trick. Sorry to say, but it's just a nice cap that finishes-off the look of the fence or deck post.

A:  No not really. I lived where their were many Trees so naturally I did have many different birds. What helped was the hard rains that Cleaned the droppings from the copper posts.

A:  These are decorative and what you are asking is not what these are for. They are awesome, hold up well and the copper color on mine has stayed even after four years in a four season climate.

A:  Hi Erich, The post cap fits nominal 4 in. x 4 in. wood post, but actual post dimensions are 3-1/2 in. x 3-1/2 in...or more specifically, 3-5/8 in. x 3-5/8 in. The amount of space within the copper post point is 1/4 inch before the angles begin. On a standard 4 in. x 4 in. wood post, you would need to leave ½ to 1 full inch of post space above the rail for the copper post point to fit – depending on preferred look and style.

A:  My posts came from Brazil and they are 3-7/16" x 3-7/16." These caps fit perfectly onto those posts. They are just under 3-3/4" inside opening. Since the sides of the caps are not exactly vertical, the extra 5/16" is great because it allows the cap to slip over the perfectly vertical faces of the post with just enough wiggle room so that you don't have to force them onto the post. BTW, the wind never blows these caps off, so there is no need for adhesive. Also, to ensure the shiny copper color remains, I sprayed 2 coats of clear Varathane on them. After 2 years, they still look brand new. 4x4 posts are supposed to be 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" per industry standards, but as you can see, not all 4x4 posts are milled exactly the same. Mine are hardwood and they were finish-sanded to result in a very smooth surface.

A:  They're designed to fit wider than the actual lumber post. Not by much but about 1/8"+ over-hang. They fit well if you can center them. My fence had a snug fit on the backside in a few places where I had to sit them flush in the back so a bit more overhang in the front. But matches my cedar fence with natural cedar stain pretty well

A:  I have just measured mine and they will accept a 94 mm (3.7") square post. The depth of the lip or overhang is 7 mm or 0.275".

Oxidizes fast in heat, humidity and salt air
We installed a fence 4 weeks ago. It is 420 linear feet so that's a lot of fence caps. You can see in the photo the fence is brand new, not even stained yet. They looked great to begin with. They do still look good from a distance but, close up, they are badly oxidized already. There was oxidation within a week of installation. I live on the Gulf Coast in Alabama and that may have some bearing on the fast oxidization because of the heat, humidity and salt air. There is full shade and bright sunlight along the fence area but all caps have oxidized at the same rate. Since they have a 'protective' clear coat, my only option will be to paint them when they get too bad. The fence caps on the steps up to the house front and back were originally black. I painted them a copper color to match. They look fabulous still. I made my own 'enamel' paint by mixing 2 parts copper acrylic craft paint and one part external water based polyurethane. That's my fallback plan. Recommended as good value with rervations regarding performance.

Previously I reviewed this product and gave it lower marks mainly because the ones that get direct sunlight in a state with a long, hot, humid summers, faded and tarnished after two summers and winters. The other reason I previously gave lower Quality and Value scores (I see those two scores as related) is because I searched *everywhere* for outdoor bright copper paint and came up empty. There were industrial products for big jobs (copper roofing, etc.), but I gave up. Then I was in Home Depot and spotted a bright copper metallic paint that can be for exterior but I don't think for constant exposure to sun, rain, etc. What a difference between the Rustoleum High Heat copper paint finish that I previously thought would restore their color and the Rustoleum product I recently got at Home Depot. See photo of before and after. Also I had spotted the Automotive enamel clear coat. I am very happy with this low-cost solution to extend the life of these super affordable caps. I have put them outside next to a new one (see photo) and, well, judge for yourself. Note that I tilted them down to show in bright daylight. Morning and dusk they "pop". Thanks Home Depot! Let's do this, together! p.s. I'm a loyal customer since going to the store that opened in the early 80s, at that time, Lindbergh area of Atlanta.

I recommend this product mainly because it's a reasonably good product at a very good price. But for each person, it depends. I bought 20 and 18 get direct sun in a southeastern state. Two years in and the 18 are quite dull and tarnished. I tried cleaning with SOS pads, but the surface does not shine up. So if you want accents in your yard, these will do it, and if they are in shade, probably will shine a lot longer than 2 years. I wrongly assumed that I could buy high gloss exterior copper (simulated) paint or enamel, but everything is INTERIOR use only. I searched marine coatings and the problem is, finding super bright gold metallic leaf or high gloss gold colors. I did see one or two online, but then a few reviewers said the color was NOT bright and shiny gold. Gold is not the same as copper effect anyway, but I would go for it if only someone made an EXTERIOR paint (preferably spray). I just tried Rustoleum High Heat Ultra. The cap color looks glossy, but it doesn't look that way on my spray-painted copper caps. I am debating if I want to spend $90 (with tax) to get 20 more of these caps. I certainly wouldn't buy the more expensive ones because I doubt they will fare much better. These caps would come out to $45 per year, or about $4 per month, to reclaim the landscape accenting we enjoyed. If you are going to sell your house, get these! Small investment to nicely differentiate your property from others.

Well made, simple post cap. For the Northwest climate, it is best to spray them with 2 coats of clear metal paint if you want the shiny copper color to last. The larger, mitred wooden post caps with the copper tops fail after a few years. After 6 years on my garden posts, these caps are still intact, but since they were not clear-painted, the copper patina look is the result.

I used one of these copper post caps on a redwood post that I put in to hang a bird feeder. I used a clear coat on the redwood to weatherproof it and just glued the cap to the top. After three years the whole thing (except the bird feeder!) looks like new. We have very hot dry summers and freezing nights in the winter.
