Can you use a 2”-4” down rod on this fan? We’d like it closer to the ceiling. If so, who carries ...

Asked by TJ December 11, 2020

Answer

Hello TJ, The use of a 2-4 inch downrod with the Springer 60 in. Ceiling Fan would put the fan too close to the ceiling and would run the risk of restricting the airflow as a result. We do not offer a downrod of 2 or 4 inches in length. We would only be able to advise of compatibility of a Progress Lighting downrod with this fan. If you have any further inquires we can assist you with, we welcome you to reach out to our Progress Lighting Technical Support Team at (864) 678-1670 as we would be more than happy to assist you further. Thank You

While this is the exact look and a beautiful windmill fan design that I wanted for our 19' vaulted ceiling, disappointment at craftmanship is an understatement. For the price of this fan, I expected top quality out of the box - but what we received and ultimately experienced is not even close. Get a cup of coffee or tea and buckle in folks - cuz as Paul Harvey used to say "and [here's] the rest of the story." For starters, we had to rent scaffolding to install this beast which has it's own cost to rent not to mention the hassle of renting, loading, trailering, unloading, setting up, tearing down, taking it back... Better than a contractor's costs to install this. Putting together this fan (which takes way longer than the youtube vid would lead you to believe) was uneventful, though I was displeased to see the long very skinny "stabalizer" rods are made of cheap plastic and easily breakable (all cats were quarantined subsequently). I knew a lot of assembly was required when I ordered this, so no complaint there, went together easily - however the screw holes for the stabalizer bars (end of blades) were not evenly spaced on all blades, making the bars on a few of them "off" center from the others, which creates a weight problem on rotation. But we'll save that fun bit for later. OOTB experience was good at first, until we pulled out the fan motor assembly and found out the down-rod receiver was made wrong -- it was made for a threaded down rod and Progressive Lighting only sells non-threaded. The instructions indicate it is supposed to be a non-threaded receiver -- the two are NOT compatible. [Insert now silent-but-angry husband] We have had to wait 3 weeks to receive this fan due to shipping issues from the warehouse and now we're sitting here with rented scaffolding all set up and last step is installing this beautiful centerpiece fan which I've just spent an hour assembling... There may have been more than just coffee in my cup by this point, because it was about to go from bad to worse. Hours of monkying with the stupid receiver after doing a good hour of research trying to find a compatible PL threaded down-rod and I find out this is clearly a defect in the product as other buyers had the same issues which I failed to discover before ordering the blasted thing. Half a day later, tempers calmed a bit, we were able to get the down-rod to go into it and began the tedious task of climbing the scaffolding and carefully weaving the fan upward to the ceiling. Installation took minutes and I was excited to finally turn the thing on... But that was short lived. As soon as I did, I noticed the fan wheel (where the blades attach) was not only flawed but BIG TIME flawed -- it was manufactured out of shape with two huge rises in it, producing a merry-go-round effect with the blades. I spent HOURS trying to work with it and find a way to offset this massive imbalance. HOURS and HOURS later, having resorted to my piggy bank for coins of various sizes and weights desperately trying to save this beyond aggravating situation and it was a total bust... I gave up. But not before I took a video of the wheel defect in case that would help me later. The scaffolding had to be returned, though we kept it an extra day just to try monkeying with it some more, but I removed all the weights and tried to live with it for a couple of weeks at that point. However, I can't run the fan above speed 2 or it rocks bad enough to make a lovely irritating clatchety noise with a perfect rhythm. Above speed 4 is "danger Will Robinson" territory and the kids can't sleep because of the noise, which sounds like it will tear out of the ceiling. So at this point, out of sheer desperation because there are no other affordable or quality options out there, I have ordered a second fan and will give it one more shot. (But I am planning to have a Hunter fan on hand as an alternative to avoid the scaffolding fiasco - which is in total about an 8hr time burn end to end not to mention the cost). I will be inspecting CLOSELY when it comes out of the box before we do anything else, and both of them will go back if this one is crap too. $700 fan and this was our experience! Pro's: color and windmill look are exactly what I wanted and as advertised. The motor is whisper quiet appears strong enough for the number of blades. Seriously moves the air which is precisely what we wanted/needed in this huge room. The remote worked perfectly even from the kitchen - good distance. But for the price - I expected top quality and precision made parts. I won't buy this brand again after this experience if the second one is like the first. Overall, this is an overpriced decoration at best but there's no alternatives under 1k for a windmill fan -- and the ones in the upper crust prices have poor reviews... So... I guess it's back to traditional style and reliable good ol' Hunter fans!! (Pssst, HUNTER -- MAKE A WINDMILL FAN in your collection and you'll have a bajillion in sales because these are in high demand for the modern farmhouse look... just sayin.)

We bought this fan for our new house and it is the perfect addition to our modern farmhouse style we are going for! I did not assemble it, the electrician did, but I did ask him how it went and he said it wasnt too hard just took a lil bit more time than normal fans. This windmill fan was the more reasonably priced one we could find and I'm so glad we got it.
