Questions & Answers

Will this plant survive &/or thrive in dappled sun?

It will be in a border near the street
Asked by: bigphyl85
Hi bigphyl85, Yes, the Tuff Stuff Hydrangea can survive and thrive in dappled sun. Its general sunlight requirement is 4+ hours of direct sun a day. However, hydrangeas generally prefer direct morning sun and dappled sun in the afternoon, as it provides relief from the extreme afternoon heat. If it is an area that only receives dappled sun, the hydrangea might require dappled sun for a longer period of time than it does with direct sunlight. It is important that hydrangeas get their necessary amount of sunlight because this will affect their ability to set buds and flower. Does Hydrangeas come back every year

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Frank
Hydrangeas are a shrub, they lose their leaves for the winter but come back the next year. My Tuff Stuff hydrangeas are very young and small right now, but other hydrangeas in my yard bloom every year.

Customer Reviews

4.5 in. qt. Tuff Stuff Reblooming (Mountain Hydrangea) Live Shrub, Blue, Pink, and Purple Flowers is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 16.

All of the plants I received from Proven Winners bought through Home Depot are the best nursery plants I have ever purchased through the internet. They are healthy and robust and the ones I bought last year are absolutely beautiful, so I returned to Home Depot to get a few more this year. THANK YOU Home Depot for dealing with such a great nursery especially since I am partially disabled and am unable to drive around to find healthy plants. Trust me when I say I have wasted a lot of money on plants that died after the first season so this makes this granny very happy. THANKS AGAIN.

I don't know if it will work to add this to my first review in March 2017 - It is now late July 2017 and I planted the plants quite awhile ago. They are growing beautifully! I live in the PNW just north of Seattle. One of the two plants is BLOOMING this year already! I'm getting pink flowers like in the photo. We have slightly acid soil here which turns hydrangeas blue I thought. So I'll see if they are blue in a few years. I had tried ordering the same kind of plant from Burpee and it was DOA due to the shipping. I put that in a review on their web site and they deleted my review. I'm delighted with Proven Winners and Home Depot and would order again from them if I need more plants.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am very happy with this purchase! I bought 8 of these and all arrived full, bushy and healthy. The leaves alone make an attractive bush. I have them planted 1.5 ft. apart for a mass planting under a tall pine tree next to an oakleaf hydrangea. They were very easy to plant and seem to have acclimated nicely to the planting area within days of daily watering in the morning and late afternoon through the hot August temperatures of south Georgia. Although they have grown a little bit, I think they will do even better with a root stimulator to help keep them going strong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plants arrived well packed and in good shape. They... Plants arrived well packed and in good shape. They are a bit small, and haven’t grown as yet, but it is fall so will see how they do in the spring. Hopefully by getting them in the late summer and safely in the ground, they will be extra beautiful in the spring.

I'm hoping to enjoy blooms on these hydrangeas for many years to come in my gardens. Since I do not make the time to winter protect any of my plants, I am hopefully that these will be hardy and bloom in my zone 5 gardens, unlike many of the marcophylla hybrids I've tried. The winter hardiness and size of these hydrangeas is what convinced me to order them. These will be planted among hostas and lilies in my partial shade perennial border. My order of four hydrangeas - two tuff stuff and two bobo - arrived without issue. The plants are all healthy, leafed out and ready to grow. The packing was excellent - the box was supportive and ventilated and the plant root balls were placed in plastic bags, secured with draw cords. This ensured delivery of my plants with no signs of damage or distress. My only issue with my order is that either a substitution was made or the plant packager grabbed the wrong plant for my 2nd tuff stuff. The marking on the pot leads my to believe my 2nd tuff stuff is actually an invincibelle ruby. Based upon the quality of the shipping system and the sale price [and free shipping offer], I will be ordering a few more hydrangeas from Lowes & Proven Winners later today. They delivered healthy plants that I cannot source locally from either the garden department at a big box store or from a nursery.

When the Tuff Stuff hydrangeas first arrived, the 1 quart size, they looked mostly dead. BUT now that it's later in March they are growing leaves on most of the little branches. I'm holding off planting them for a little while and keeping them in a protected place. We have had a later winter than usual. It's now starting to warm up to 50+ each day and we are having lots of rain so I will plant them soon. I live just north of Seattle (by about 5 miles). In their pots they are showing more and more leaves all the time so I have high hopes for these fascinating and lovely hydrangeas. I couldn't buy them locally so took a chance on mail order. I'm happy with the results.
