POE connection

Photo of NVR appears the camera connections are BNC or similar type of connection. Is this correct? or are the camera connections RJ45?
Asked by: Menotyou
Hello Home Depot Customer, this is a great question. This is an NVR system that uses power over ethernet (POE). It does not require any BNC or RJ45 cables. The kit includes, instead, (4) 100ft CAT5e cables to connect directly from the NVR to the camera. No other cables will be needed to connect from the cameras to the NVR.

Customer Reviews

8-Channel IP Indoor/Outdoor Surveillance 2TB NVR System with (4) 4MP H.265 Bullet Cameras is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from WORKS GREAT Everything needed was included in the packaging except there were no operating instructions. We had to download the manual on the internet, which turned out to be the manual for a different model number .We called Q See customer service, which sent us the correct manual. They were very helpful. We tested the cameras to make sure that they worked(they did) and set up the software on the computer. Then we hired professionals to install the cameras. It took them approximately four hours(3 guys) to install them. The picture quality is excellent, even at night. It is very sensitive on motion detection mode, even picking up insects flying by. It records almost all the time, as it even picks up cars driving down the street. This is not a negative because the system automatically deletes older recordings. It has a range of 100 feet day and night, which is more than adequate. We are very happy with the system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Quality! I had been looking for a surveillance system for some time when Home Depot featured this as a "Today Only" special. The 8-camera package was not only an exceptional buy but had all the features I was looking for. During the day the cameras provide crystal clear video in full color and even in total darkness at night the IR cameras render remarkably clear black & white images. The 3tb hard drive assures ample storage even at the highest settings. I installed the system myself and while running cables from under the eaves of my house, through my attic and down the wall to the NVR was anything but easy, actually setting up the cameras and system once the cables were in place was fairly simple. Connecting the NVR to my TV was as easy as plugging in the HDMI cable. It took about an hour to figure out how to view the system on my computer, tablet and phone but that was mainly due to me not being tech savvy. I'm now able to view all eight cameras from any location and even capture images or video directly to my computer, tablet or phone. I've only had the system up and running for a couple of weeks now but it is working flawlessly. The cameras & NVR seem to be of excellent quality and I am hopeful they will continue to work for years to come. The two-year warranty gives me peace of mind if something does fail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great surveillance solution This surveillance system with six cameras is about the right size that is needed for my home. The cameras are not used for far distances, and placed in strategic positions, the 3 MP cameras provided excellent resolution. The wiring was easy because you do not need to provide power for each camera and a single wire, included in the package, is required for each camera installation. You will need two outlets for the recorder bur that's easy to solve with a power strip. The wire to each camera is 100 feet but you can acquire longer up to 300 feet. I ran all my wiring through my garage and basement into the nearby laundry room to connect to the recorder, and the 100 feet wires were OK. The recorder is kind of noisy for me and I wanted to keep it away so my laundry room was a great location. These cameras provided excellent night vision and have motion sensing to initiate recording. There are VGA and HDMI connections for monitors. You can also receive alert and monitor from a smart phone or from a computer.

The NVR was easy to set up and get views, but the fine tuning takes a bit of experimenting. The camera adjustments and recording options aren't intuitive and the included instructions are very basic. I probably could have found detailed instructions on line but I chose to play with it and I have it mostly set up the way I want it. The night vision is pretty good. You get a good view for about 40 feet, which is really a limit of the camera capability. Even in daytime, you can't expect to see more than 50-60 feet with good clarity and to be able to identify someone. I can see the bottom of the driveway 150 feet away, and know when a car goes by, but I couldn't identify the model. The cable lengths are good, I haven't had a problem reaching the far corners of the house. Overall, I'm pleased.

I did some special networking things with it on our network to put it in its own VLAN and subnet and it played along nicely! I added a different model IP camera from Q-see and it worked great after contacting support. Support was excellent, knowledgeable and professional... the accent was not native english speaking, but easy enough to understand and the people on the other end were very helpful.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just an ok system. I really wanted to like this system, but it has way more issues than it does positives for my use. The cameras are great quality, mounting is a bit iffy since it comes with 3 smalls screws that can easily rip off if not mounted securely. It comes with enough cat5 cable to connect each camera to the recording unit. The recorder is underwhelming, which to me the more tech oriented home owner expected more out of. When I opened the unit the first thing i noticed was something rattling around inside the recorder. It might be a screw or transistor, but thus far the unit still works. You'll know the unit is working because it is obnoxiously loud. You cannot be in the same room with it peacefully, the fan will drive you insane and it puts out some heat. I would mount it in a linen closet, but there are no power outlets in mine. This unit takes up two outlets and needs to be hardwired to a router. If you want to connect a monitor to it, you must use VGA or HDMI. No DVI input. The software for the unit leaves much to be desired. It is very clunky, requires Internet Explorer and the installation of proprietary software. This unit is suitable for a cheap store surveillance unit. I wouldn't recommend for home use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A professional system easily installed and used by regular homeowner When I picked up this surveillance system I wanted to like it and it just so happen that I absolutely love it. Q-see did a fantastic job with this system. A professional level surveillance system that can be installed and run by the regular homeowner. 2TB Full HD NVR with POE and of the cables need for install. No messing around trying to figure out which cables to purchase and how long each one needs to be. The setup also consists 8 cameras. Both camera types are rated IP66 so they can be used both indoors and outdoors, but I will get to that rating later CAMERAS: The cameras are 3 megapixels each with full high definition. I know with today's advances in technology that does not sound all that appealing, but for a surveillance system at this level its actually great. The video feed from the cameras is clear enough to distinguish and small details in appearance that would prove invaluable if you ever have a need to review the footage. All of the cameras have a viewing field of 65-70 degrees. Admittedly its not the widest field of view but it is more than usable field of view. There is a positive side to this. Though wider angle lenses capture more area in one frame, they also make everything appear to be further away and much smaller. Which makes distinguishing details harder. With surveillance cameras night vision is always a concern, because most of unwanted activities take place in the dark or at night. So good night vision is a big deal. These cameras actually have great night vision up to 100ft. Clear night vision with a minimal amount of glare. One of my favorite features of this system is that it is "Power over Ethernet (POE)". That means no more messing around with and running multiple cables for each camera. Each camera uses a single Cat5 Ethernet cable that both powers the camera and runs the the video signal. Which makes life a whole lot easier when it comes to installing this system as its a simple 1 cable from each camera straight to the box. Though this does mean that the NVR needs 2 power outlets in your home as it has a 12v input to power the box itself and a 48v input to power the POE connections. The cameras are built to last. Trust me on this one. That is obvious as soon as you hold one in your hand. The casing that houses the actual cameras was build very well. Giving each camera a high IP rating of 66. That means the cameras are completely sealed again dust and debris and they can handle strong powerful jets of water. Basically as long as these cameras are not being fully submerged in water. You are good to go. NVR: The NVR (Network Video Recorder). Basically the box that all the cameras plugs into that hooks up to your TV or monitors for viewing. The description of this system says that it is an 8 channel system, but that is only referring to the 8 cameras that come with the system. The box you receive has the ability to monitor 16 cameras at a time. There are 8 POP connections on the back of the box, plus you can monitor 8 more cameras over a network. The NVR internal fans are not the loudest Ive heard, but they are not quiet either. Thus I wouldn't recommend setting up the box in a commonly quiet room like the living room or a bedroom. By comparison the fans on my DVR cable box are louder. Also the status lights on the front of the NVR would not make for relaxing ambiance in a bedroom. The NVR comes installed with a 2TB seta hard drive. Combine that with the H.264 advanced compression and you get an impressive 44 days of 24 hours recording at 30 frames per second with the lowest quality 720 resolution. At the highest quality video recording you still get an impressive 12 days of 24 hour recording. You can also upgrade the hard drive to a maximum of 4TB to effectively double the time of recording. When you power the NVR on first the first time you will be prompted with a setup wizard, which is really easy do. The wizard assists in setting up a password and connecting to your home network/internet. Whether you choose to setup the system for only monitoring from a computer with in the network or monitoring from any computer. It is fairly fast and easy. Do not expect any awesome graphics or wallpapers on the viewing screen The monitor screen is far from revolutionary graphics and is not at all amazing to look at, but then again it does not need to be. The focus is on surveillance which it does very well. Its not for entertainment. The system has a very intuitive and user friendly home screen for monitoring and menu for setting up recording times, backup, monitoring, managing storage, motion detection, ect. You can also do all of this over your network as well. NOT SO GOOD: Though the NVR is a fairly nice recorder and does its job well. I do not like that it can only support up to 3 megapixel cameras. It just seems odd that they would only make this unit to support only up to 3 megapixel cameras as Q-see makes 4 megapixel cameras in the QT series lineup. So that means that you wont be upgrading the cameras to a higher megapixel with out upgrading to a different NVR as well. I must note that I do not really see a need for upgrading to higher megapixel cameras as the 3 megapixels are more that adequate. I also do not like that the NVR lacks a manual power switch on the unit. The lack of a power button has its practical reasons as most camera surveillance systems are run 24 hours a day 365 days a year and you wouldn't want someone accidentally hitting the power button causing you to have to reboot the entire system, but from a consumer standpoint with the system being used in a house and not a professional setting. It would be preferable to have a power switch for the system. As it stands you have to go into the menu to shut down the system and that doesn't power the system down. It just makes it safe for you to manually disconnect power to the system. The lack of a power button also means the as soon as you plug the NVR in. It turns on. This is by no means reason to pass this surveillance system up, but it would have been nice to have a manual switch to power down the system when need be. The mounting hardware that come with the cameras are just to small for most any application. The problem is easily remedied by taking a trip to your local home depot and pick up adequate screws and anchors. The mobile app is by far the hardest, most finicky thing to get setup, but the company was great in assisting me in getting it setup Conclusively I think its a great surveillance system with a great price. There are few things about that system that could be better like the mobile app, but nothing to be considered major. With anything you buy you have pros and cons and with this system the good far outweighs the bad in my opinion.

The NVR is very loud on startup and is louder than expected in standby mode. The camera's had a beautiful picture with the 4mp resolution. Unfortunately the IP cameras are not like their lower quality 3mp ones, you have to use a plug in to view them directly. So not truly IP. I had my friend (network analyst) work on it for several hours and even with his 3mp Qsee system to try and get it to work. No luck. So you can not integrate into a controller system like Vera. If you were to use it as a standalone on the network that it creates then forward ports at your router and use there app, it would work but not be versatile. Like Synology or Hivision setup. They do provide great picture instructions for setup on their website. One upside is that it can handle up to 16 camera feed channels. 8 can be hardwired, but 16 if you have them on your network. So the advertised 8 is the amount of ports on the NVR. The front has a usb port and the back has a usb 3.0 port.
