Questions & Answers

Does this have an in-attic thermostat?

Asked by: HB
It comes with a thermostat that can be installed where ever you want, but apparently is intended to be installed in the attic.

Most other fans use 200 - 300 watts. This is rated at 30 watts. Any weakness here? Amperage given as 1 amp, that is 115 watts. What gives?

.
Asked by: DrMike
Fans are rated at how much air they can move typically in a minute. This in turn is dependent not only on the speed and torque of the fan motor but also the pitch of the fan blades. Motors can be made (designed) to minimize current draw, i.e. use less power and still be able to deliver enough torque and speed to move the same amount of air as more simple motor designs which depend on a great current draw to move the same amount of air.

HOW ABOUT ONE ON EACH END OF OF THE HOUSE

Asked by: Clyde
You could certainly install one on each end of the house if you have two gables. That is an option discussed in the installation guide. Just wire both fans into a single thermostat.

Is it okay to have one blow in and one blow out?

I have a long rectangular single level home. About 3500 sq. ft. I installed one fan blowing out. The center of the house is two large rooms with a vaulted ceiling. I worry that if I install a second fan at the opposite end and also have it blow out that the air will dead head in the center and stay hot. What do you think of havind the second fan blow in so as to create a flow from one end of the house t the other?
Asked by: Bobr
Just try one at first... blowing out. Don't overthunk it!

I got my first one a year ago for my upstairs attic. I bought a new one for my downstairs attic. They are great. Very quiet. I did buy multiple other brands that were much less expensive and tried them out. They all had an annoying motor whine that resonated throughout the house. I think many of competitors fans are all made in the same foreign factory and then just "re-badged" with someone who adds the blades or maybe just a sticker. This one is much different. It is made in California and it is guaranteed for 15 years. It is very very quiet. And it only uses 30 watts. The other fans use between 250 to 300 watts. So, with a 10 to 12 hour run time per day, you can make your money back pretty fast. My first fan from a year ago was installed as a vent fan to an existing vent in the attic. For this one I had a custom vent made for $100 and then installed the fan in the attic so that it vents through the shroud. See the photo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Defintitely the best attic fan I'v e ever installed At first I was astounded by the price becasue it is so much more expensive then the standard attic fan I bought at another store. Luckily I discovered this fan, installed it and returned the other to the store. This fan is phenominal. Clearly the construction materials are superior, the motor is an ECM motor that uses only 30 watts to move a lot of air, (compared to 430 watts for the one I bought at the store) and the warranty can't be beat. It came with a thermostat, a full color installation guide and wiring instructions and was easy to install. Without a doubt the best fan I've ever bought. Kudos to Quiet Cool for making such a great product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor packaging Unit really makes a difference on getting that trapped air out the attic makes my AC unit work more efficiently. The bad is unit arrived damaged due to poor packaging and blades would not turn without hitting cylinder, be prepared to bend it back to shape. Unit is not as quiet you're made to believe but not horrible either. Install was not bad if you don't mind crawling around in the attic, thermostat comes included which I recommend installing so unit doesn't run when it's not needed to. Would rate higher but due to bent up unit and no response from email to quiet cool co. caused its rating. PS unit only traveled about 20 miles from my home, wish I would of known this would of picked up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I purchased this fan to replace an Air Vent product that is very loud and noisy. This fan is as advertised. It is extremely quiet. I have it in an upstairs attic and the other fan vibrated throughout the entire upstairs. This one is so quiet that I cannot tell that it is even running. I only have one complaint. For the price the fan should include an attic thermostat. Even the Air Vent fan at a price of $63 comes pre-wired with an attic thermostat. The fan does come with a house thermostat. But I am not sure why I would want that. I want the thermostat to be in the attic where the heat is. So, I took the one off my Air Vent fan and used it and it works fine. Also if it does last the 15 years as advertised then it is well worth the money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice fan but issues need resolving The fan came well packed, looks good, runs well. The wiring is a problem. The pre-wired FLEX connection to a handybox used the wrong parts, such that I had to install a #1 size bushing and replace the ROMEX clamp with a FLEX clamp. The provided thermostat is extremely sensitive to the front of the mounting box being non-flat, essentially requiring some spacers or washers to hold the unit off of a metal box in order to allow it to be securely fastened. Without spacers the unit may switch on regardless of the temperature or refuse to switch on. Some kind of flexible shroud to connect the fan housing to the gable vent would be a good accessory. Without anything installed in the gap a significant amount of the air flow blows out between the fan housing and the vent. The manufacturer's installation instructions note that the installer needs to add something but provides no details, illustrations, or suggestions in this regard.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice, quiet, low power consumption, 2 nit pick details. I had mine shipped to my local store in case there was any damage that I've read about in other reviews.I I used a 3x3 piece of 3/4 ply and pre attached the fan single gang j box and thermostat with a 14 gauge appliance cord which I use as a disconnect in my attic should I need to repair or replace. Two issues, the ground wire from the fan does have an eye on it to place under the grounding screw, the wire is only 2 1/4 inches long from where it enter the junction box, I prefer to splice all of my grounds together and per NEC the ground wire does not extend 3" out of the junction box so I had to cut back a couple of inches of the armor on the cable to get the correct length of ground wire extending into the junction box. While it is not NEC required, best practice will tell you that any wires coming out of armor shall have an anti-short bushing (red head) on it to protect the insulation from being cut over time by vibration and causing a short. I would expect when paying $350 for a fan that the manufacturer would include a 3 cent bushing on their product. Yes a little uptight but as an electrician everything I touch is done to code at the bare minimum, a brutal inspector could call you on it and you could not argue it. I tried to call the manufacturer to share my input but was intercepted by a rather rude receptionist that could have cared less. I checked the readings with my meter and the fans draw was 25.4 watts with a PF of 52 which surprised me, I would have expected a higher PF

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's Quiet Bought this online and had it shipped directly to my house. Fan is fairly basic in nature. Install was easy if you're familiar with basic electrical work. It has a built in thermostat that adjusts the point at which it turns on. This is adjustable from 80 to 120 degrees. I tied it into a single pole 15amp switch located in the hall closet so I could turn it off if we leave for a vacation or during winter time. This fan is super quiet. I have this mounted on the gable end of our attic directly above our bedroom and we can not hear it run at all from the inside. The only time I can hear it is when I stand directly below it outside. It's a great product so far. It comes with 15 year warranty I believe. So far it's a great product, looking forward to see how it preforms this summer

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Quiet Cool" says it all I like the brushless motor and the wattage used to power this fan. Less than a 40watt lightbulb, and 10yr warrenty. I would of given this a Excellent value if they would of sent a better thermostat. The one they sent was a plastic in house unit and not a metal cased attic unit. Overall I would buy another one in a heartbeat.
