Q:Should QuietWalk be installed on subfloor and then have additional plywood sheets glued/nailed on top of QuietWalk to raise total floor height or should we glue/nail extra plywood to subfloor first then attach QuietWalk?
      by|Sep 8, 2023
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  QuietWalk should be the last layer installed before the finished floor covering. If added height is needed, install all materials for that purpose first, then install QuietWalk, then your floor covering.

A:  You will need to check with the flooring manufacturer on whether or not they require a moisture barrier when installing on a concrete slab.

Under layment made a difference on my floor by reducing noise and adding a bit more comfortable feel under my feet.

          Destroyed our vinyl floor
Home depot recommended this to us when purchasing Nighthawk flooring. Everyone said it was easy to work with, and they were right. They said I would love it, but after being told this is the reason my $4000 in flooring is falling apart under my feet, Im not loving it any longer. Now we have a busted floor, and no one will accept responsibility.

            Almost easy
So I went with because of the thickness and review rating. Pretty easy to work but the adhesive is too far away from the edge for the plastic lip to adhere to it. Maybe I got a misaligned roll but the seams were flush and I had to stretch the plastic to get it to the adhesive strip, which caused the edges to overlap, so I had to forgo the "handy lip design."

              "Quietwalk" is a misnomer
Replaced cheap plastic underlayment that was recommended by my installer, and installed Quietwalk in it's place. Unfortunately, Quietwalk is anything but quiet. The floor now has a distinct hollow sound, and if you're wearing shoes it sounds as if a parade of horses is walking through your home. Additionally, the floor now has a spongy feeling when walked upon vs the solid feeling in the rest of the home. The flooring visibly moves up and down vs no movement before. May end up replacing again.

                QuietWalk is pretty loud
We installed luxury vinyl flooring in our home in 2 stages; two years ago we did half the house using a vapor barrier and generic plastic underlayment (not QuietWalk) and this year did the rest of the home using QuietWalk. The flooring 2 years ago did not have a foam backing, but what we got this year did. Same SKU, but the material changed. The flooring from 2 years ago feels tight to the concrete floor, has almost no "give", and is pretty quiet. The flooring from this year feels bouncy when you walk on it, and is really loud. Like, the cat jumping off the bed and walking down the hall in the night will wake you up. Even with just stocking feet, there's no way to walk quietly on the QuietWalk half of the house. It's not just a little louder, it is significantly louder. The wife prefers the feel of the half without QuietWalk, but I prefer the feel of the floor with QuietWalk. We both agree on the loudness comparison though.

I bought this to put under engineered bamboo flooring. It adds a noticeable layer of cushion to the floor. The house seems much quieter now. I'm not hearing as much outside noise from music or traffic from a nearby highway. There's now an echo in the house and inside noises are louder and more crisp. I've been wanting to soundproof my walls for several years, but haven't gotten around to it, but I was unaware that most of the bothersome noise was coming up through the floor. Now I don't need to soundproof the walls, because QuietWalk works. The moisture barrier is a big plus, but the sound barrier is top notch. It was well worth the little extra money per square foot.

The product works great. The ability to tape them together with the strip that is attached worked perfectly. I don't understand some of the comments about how difficult it was to work with. Even the end of the rolls stayed mostly flat once unrolled across the floor. I would definitely recommend this over the garbage they tried to sell me that they carry in stock. I only gave it 4 stars because nothing in life is perfect, but this is close to perfect.
