Questions & Answers

what kind of thermostat is used with this under layment? How much does it cost?

Asked by: Jeneva
The thermostat has to have a remote sensor that is placed under the floor next to the heating mat. The thermostat can range in price from about $70.00 and up.

ho much to poerate?

How much will this thing raise my electric bill? it seems to be if my math is correct to draw 360 watts which would show up on the electric bill, how much is what i don't know, can anyone who has one of these tell me how significant the change in electric bill will be?
Asked by: dennis
If my armchair calculation is correct, about as much as turning on three 60-watt light bulbs (for the 3'x5' film); i.e., 3'x5' =15 sq ft, x 12 watts per s/f = 180 watts.

3 ft. x 10 ft. 120-Volt Electric Radiant Floor Heat Heating System for Laminate, Luxury Vinyl and Floating Floors is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 61.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfect Just in time for our new wood floor in our walk in closet. The product was easy to install but you do need lots of planning. The actual install was fast but you do need to read and understand the electrical, requirements that will also go through a thermostat not included . First you need a 20 amp circuit that is not shared. Then you need to get the wires to the radiant heat film. Remember this is Radiant heat film and is not instant heat it could take from hours to days to get your floor area up to your desired temperature . Depending on the sub floor and the floor finish will determine the amount of time . Radiant heat takes a while for things to absorb the energy the air in most cases may never reach your desired temp. It is also something you don't turn off and i.e. peck it ti cool quickly. So great product made well with high quality products. Not a beginner project but can be done , read the instructions and hire an electrician if electric is not your thing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Toasty I used this under our laminate in the bath/shower area of our bathroom. I also used the 1.5 ft. X 10 ft. in front of the double vanity and doorway in the same bathroom. The floor heaters do a great job of warming (not heating) the floor. They tqke the chill out of the laminate that is installed over a concrete slab. They do not warm the bathroom, only the flooring. I have a HVL to actually heat the bathroom. Installing the actual mats is very simple. They're very simple to lay out under the laminate flooring. Installing and wiring the thermostat is more time consuming than the mats. The mats must be connected to a special thermostat designed for them. Once connected, the flooring temperature can be selected. I'm happy with the installation. A little luxury in the master bath is nice. I was a little stressed about the longevity of the mats until my wife reminded me that, if they fail, we'll still have what we had before--unheated floors--nothing less, nothing more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing like nice warm feet on a cold rainy day !!!! Nothing Like Warm Feet on a cold rainy day !!!This is a great project for anyone from beginner to advanced, If you can install snap lock flooring, You can install this heat system. 1. install padding 2. start to install flooring 3. slide heat mats under flooring with electrical leads directed at location of thermostat. 4. finish floor 5. run 110V power to thermostat box 6. connect wires 7, ENJOY !!!! Look at my pics and you can see the ease of hook up. I installed 2 pads under my floor and all I had to do was connect the lead wires, power and sensor wires to the thermostat and I was done. the heat mats came on quickly and brought the temperature of the floor from 68 to 75 in less than 10 minutes.... Installation is simple, quick and easy and the product should last a long time as there is hardly anything to go wrong with it. As well as being at a reasonable price.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Straight forward installation and efficiently heats floor and air This is basically a toaster that you put under your floor. It's a resistance 120v AC system that you can control with a timer, thermostat, or an on/off switch. It is incredibly thin yet effective There is an installation video on the Home Depot website that does a fantastic job of illustrating the installation process so I will not go into that here. Watch and understand the video. It is very useful I used this under a floating laminate floor in a basement over concrete floors. Once installed, I have found a few things. The floor does not heat up quickly. It took probably 20 minutes to get it up to full temperature. The air temperature in the room also does not heat up immediately. I found that the air temp went from 67 to 73 in about 30 minutes with the floor at 96 degrees F. There is some inconsistency in the heat too on the floor. There are hot spots and warm spots as shown in the photos. I know resistance heat can be vary so I do not feel this is a deal breaker. Overall, this is an great solution to cold floors especially in a basement that not only heats your feet but air as well. I would classify this as an advanced DIY job

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for the bathroom floor This was a very needed thing for my bathroom floor. I have always wanted some kind of added heat in my bathroom. When I get out of the shower I am a little cold. This mat goes under the flooring material. I ended up putting it underneath tile. I had carpet in the bathroom that I removed. I used a new material from HomeDepot model#DH5MA to separate this from the tile above it. The hard part was finding where to put the wires. What I ended up doing is just drilling through the floor near the wired end of the heat strip. Then I ran the wires to a junction box under the floor. From there I ran the wires to a control box. I would say the worst part was finding out how expensive the control thermostat and temperature probes (thermocouples) were. What I ended up using was off the shelf controller from China for $21.49 and used a K type thermocouple for $2.49.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Slow Steady Heat Great stand alone product, to augment your heating, for somewhere you might sit a long time (e.g. a desk or in front of a TV couch) or have bare feet touching the floor (e.g. next to a bed or in a bathroom), but if you move the desk/couch/bed, you will have to rip up the floor to move it along. The directions show you being able to set up a grid of these, to heat an entire room's floor, but I am not sure how cost effective that would be? The box states, 'Heat your floor for pennies a day!', but just this one alone uses 334W. Three hours of use, and you have used a Kilowatt. My Power Company charges me $.18/Kilowatt. Multiple that by hours run per day, and multiple that by numerous mats ... and it is more like 'dollars a day' (imho). I also find it odd, and a much larger installation expense, to require this be on a 'dedicated' 20A breaker (i.e. run 12 gauge wire from this to the breaker box). It uses less than 3A. Running this to the closest outlet, and upgrading that outlet to GFI, seems sufficient. A dedicated 20A would make sense if you ganged 5 of these. Only had it a few days, and like it so far. Have not got a power bill. but time will tell ... Best part, which I do not see mentioned anywhere, it is stamped, 'Made in USA'

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice warm floors. I installed this in a breakfast nook that I built in what was a sun porch. Well it is well insulated as part of the conversion, it has an unheated crawl space under it. So I wanted something to keep the floor warm on my bear feet! Installation is easy. You can cut it to length by cutting on the dashed line closest to the length you need. You then cover the ends of the power buss with the supplied insulating circles supplied. This was great for me because my space was only 7 feet long. You then tape it too the sub-floor, making sure you will not be driving screws or nails through it! The hardest part is getting the power wires from the sub-floor and into the wall. You need to make provisions for this before closing up the wall. You also need to make provisions for the sensor cable from the thermostat. You need to sense the temperature under the floor - not the room temperature. So make sure you get one designed for this type of heating. Well it is hard to tell how well it is going to work in summer weather, it does get the floor comfortably warm. I will find out this winter if I need to add more heat, and how expensive it is to run. I did make provisions to add more heat to the nook if needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Toasty Floors This is a fairly easy to install system. It's super thin so it doesn't add any thickness to the floor. The wires that run from the underlayment to the thermostat are thicker than the underlayment itself. The only surprise here is that the type of thermostat you need for this is pretty expensive. You can't use a standard thermostat. One other thing to note is the temperature you set on the thermostat adjusts the "floor" temp and not the "room" temp. This type of system isn't designed to actually heat up the room, just the floor. However there is some added warmth to the room but you can't rely on this alone for your heat, at least not in a fairly cold climate. But a great system overall.
