Will this deliver a uniform color to all surfaces of concrete stairs (including vertical surfaces)?

Asked by: TJ
As long as you apply a consistent thickness, it will be uniform. My experience 15 years ago was that it is VERY white compared to a typical concrete pour. I'm actually considering this for a patio project and came back here to read any updates or more current reviews. We are shooting for closer to sandstone or "greige" vs white for our patio; so I'm exploring options. Going to grind the thinset off(mostly) and resurface instead of re-tiling our patio...hoping to cut down on heat build-up from the afternoon central Texas sun!

Can I use this on my front porch, and paint it when complete?

Asked by: homedepotjunkie
That,s exactly what I did and it turned out very nice. On the porch it may get slippery in the rain and snow so be careful.

Customer Reviews

Quikrete 40 lb. Concrete Resurfacer, Concrete Gray is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 101.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great to do overlays! I can't review whether this product works as described for one solid area, but we resurfaced our spalled concrete a little differently by doing an overlay. First we patched any spalled areas. Next we made a stencil out of duct tape that would mark out the areas of the grout lines. Then we worked on one patch of our porch at a time, putting down the concrete resurfacer with color mixed in. My husband took a float and went over top of the surface to give it a sort of slate look. Finally, we removed the duct tape before the concrete was completely hard. It turned out great and we get tons of compliments. Most companies we talked to wanted at least $750 to do an overlay on our spalled porch, many others wanted to completely tear out our concrete for several thousands of dollars. We repaired it for $100 and years later, we're still happy with the look! We did spend a ton of time with the prep work, ensuring we following the directions to a T. But several years later the resurfacer still looks great and has really held up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Held up great for us!!! Been researching another resurfacing project and came across this review page. I can't leave those two-star reviews to stand! I used the Quikrete Resurfacer to refinish our chunky, cracked and generally ugly driveway some years back. While a helper would have been...helpful, I actually did this by myself. Patched the cracks a couple of weeks before, then applied the Resurfacer to our two-car-wide driveway over a 25 foot length. Looked like a new driveway(almost) and held up for a few years of two-car, twice-a-day traffic. For the results we obtained and the price paid, it's a good 4.5 Star product!!! I also resurfaced our decades old pre-cast concrete steps leading to the paito...held up great for most of a decade before we moved!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great and it's not hard to do Decided to resurface my folks 35 year old cracked and pitted patio. First I repaired the cracks etc with the resurfacer, as per directions waited till they were dry then poured on the resurfacer first coat using a floor squeegee to spread it. The stuff dried a bit fast because of the weather but just sprinkled some extra water on it so it would continue to spread easily and evenly. Waited a day then put 2nd coat on. I'm not a youngster, I'm a Grandma and if I can do it anyone can.

I can see where others become frustrated with this product but if you mix with water per instructions (perhaps a little more water) you can spread a little bit at a time until you get the surface you want. Tip: Having done a project myself, I can tell you it will go a little easier if you have a helper. Tip: Keep a MIST over your new surface as you spread to keep it malleable. Tip: If you dont pour the entire bucket out at once, add a little water to the bucket from time to time and run your paddle bit through it again to keep it from hardening in the bucket. Tip: once you spread this stuff out and you get ready to broom (concrete broom works best), spray the broom bristles with a hose and then shake it to leave just a little bit of water in the bristles. What this will do is make a very nice broom finish and the little bit of water will help soften and knock down any "boogers" that result from the resurfacer setting a little faster that desired. Tip: Just like any other concrete product, the colder the weather, the better. If you work during summer months, its best to do this as early in the morning as possible or late evening to avoid direct sun light. Its all about timing. This makes an excellent product if you do it right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Money saver I've read bad reviews of this product and the only thing certain is those bad reviews do not know how to install it correctly. I've been using this product for years. I also give a 2 year warranty for installation against cracking and chipping. I have customers from 6 years ago who to this day still have my repair holding. If you follow this process you will succeed. Acid wash then let dry, concrete bonding adhesive and then immediately use Quikrete Resurfacer, broom finish, brick rub after 24-48 hours. Perfect job every time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product Please dont listen to all of the bad reviews. I believe there is improper application error going on all around here. The product works as it is supposed to. However, it does leave a lot of blank spaces and even more questions unanswered that definitly arise before, during, and after pouring. I have purchased over 20 boxes of this stuff. Failing misersbly and suffering most if not more of the issues described in the many poor reviews. Choosing not to give up on this product, i tried and tried again until I got a system that works. Tools. You will need a squeegee. No matter what unless your project is very small and can do with a trowel. You will need to do the “optional second coat.” I have found that the end surface WILL crack no matter what. The second coat is to conceal. If youre not going to do the 2nd coat in my opinion dont even bother you will get poor results. A CLEAN bucket. No debree in the container. A mixer attachment for your power drill(you have one i imagine) .Surface preparation. It must be spotless clean. No debree not even pea size. If its there and you pour. Youre going to end up scraping it all off. I washed my floor with a regular hose and high jet nozzle. After it dried the following day. (I used the squeegee to get all of the sitting water off.) i meticulously vacuumed the floor to remove all of the debree and dust. Mixing. Follow the directions. It will be thick when you first mix. The required amount of water should not be altered. This is CORRECT. You will not be pouring in this consistency just wait 5 min after mixing, dont touch it. The air pockets will rise during this time. If you add too much water or you dont wait 5 min, your finished surface will have small holes. After 5 min mix for about one minute. NOW you can add water. I add water untill its the consistency of syrup. Im ready to pour, i dampen the existing surface with a mist nozzle. Until its somewhat glazed. Pour the material in a long line. PULL the squeegee toward you slowly from one end of the profect area to the other and back. Two passes is usually enough to get nice even coverage. As youre working the material it will lose moisture. And thicken. I add water ONCE to get it to the consistency of syrup again.( anymore than that and it will flake off when it dries. Move quickly with care for detail. Let it sit for about 6 hours. Sweep the floor to remove any dry pieces that are sticking out or above. Do the process again with a second coat. Then dont walk on it dont touch it for 48 hours. This process will give you the results you are expecting from this product. Wash your tools!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not a self leveler, but great as a resurfacer I used this, thinking it would self level. It does flow, but will not level out. If you use a tool and a straightedge, it can be alot cheaper then bags of self leveling cement. I used this in the badly uneven parts of my floor, then topped with SL. It would work great for a patio or sidewalk surface. This was not why I bought it, but now that I used it, have plans for future projects now.
