I am putting a shower in the basement that has a cement floor but I don't want to tile over it and just use it for athe shower floor-do I need to seal it? And can I add color to this mix?
Asked by: bj
it is not as simple as that. You need to use deck mud (5 parts sand : 1 part portland cement) as a 'Pre slope' then lay a PVC pan liner, then use the deck mud to make actual slope over the liner. check out products like quick pitch and videos by goof proof on YT to see how this is done

Is this product appropriate for the pre-slope layer of a shower pan AND the final layer poured onto the vinyl pan liner before tiling?

I did use this product for the pre-slope layer and it laid in well and is now curing overnight. I will probably install the pan liner after 24 hours but likely wait another day for the top layer and just wanted to make sure i could use the same product for the final layer too. All the videos i watched also talked about a 24 hour cure period before working the pan liner and the second layer, is that appropriate with this product or do i need to wait longer than 24-48 hours to apply the second layer in the pan?

Can Deck Mud be used to set an acrylic shower pan on a concrete slab?

My first choice was Quikrete Sand/Topping mix but this is not available in my area.
Asked by: stuart
No, QUIKRETE® Deck Mud is designed to be used for jobs requiring an underlayment mortar for leveling floors and / or countertops. It is proportioned in accordance with the requirements of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A108.1A.2.2.1, while the specification for mortar for shower receptors is ANSI A.2.3.1. Even if your local Home Depot store does not routinely stock the QUIKRETE® Sand / Topping Mix #1103, they should be able to special order it for you. QUIKRETE® Sand Topping Mix blended with QUIKRETE® Concrete Acrylic Fortifier #8610 replacing a portion of the water content is the product we recommend for shower pans, so you were on the right track with your original choice.

What type of job is this product use for ?

Asked by: Chuck
I used it for a pre-slope in my shower basin. It can be used as the actual shower slope itself as well.

Customer Reviews

50 lb. Deck Mud is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Ideal for DIY!! Disclaimer: I am NOT a professional. I was installing the pre-slope in my new shower basin utilizing this Deck Mud. Everything I read has said to use 5 Parts sand to 1 part cement (5:1 mixture) I contacted Quikrete directly to ask what their mixture of their deck mud was. The person told me it was a 3:1 mixture (3 parts sand to 1 part concrete) and they DO NOT RECOMMEND you mix any additional sand to the deck mud. Being as I am a rookie, the stuff dries super quickly! It was tough for me to get the slope done in time before it dried. Towards the end of my small shower pan pre-slope (33 inch x 33 inch) the deck mud was already dry and unusable. Instead of using this deck mud for my actual shower slope itself, I purchased Portland Cement and bags of sand. The 5:1 mixture was MUCH easier to use as a first time shower pan installer. This product might be useful for a pro, but for a rookie, mixing the mixture was MUCH easier and didn't dry nearly as quickly.
