Questions & Answers

can i attach it to the ceiling in my attic somehow???

Asked by: Enzio
I installed it the cathedral ceilings of my cabin. Had to staple strips of cheap webbing to hold it in place until I installed the ceiling boards. String, twine, or webbing across the rafter bottoms might work to hold it in place even if you don't want to put ceiling boards in your attic. I put in radiant barrier first, then left a two inch gap between the radiant barrier and the denim bats.

Wanted to have foam insulation sprayed into the walls of my new 16'x24' workshop but I could not cost justify the $2,100. I purchased the denim insulation because of the sound deadening feature and it has worked out great. I used 9/16" T-50 staples. I tacked the insulation top in 3 places and sides in 2 each studs close to the top and worked down to the floor. That made feeding the insulation behind wires and pipes much easier. I then cut just below the wire/pipe with a dremel Multi-Max just deep enough to allow the wire/pipe to be encased by the insulation and hang properly. Around outlets and switches I used the same process but tore out about 1/2 the depth/thickness so some insulation could be stuffed behind the electrical box. I then stapled every 16"-18" down along each stud to the bottom. The insulation has been up a week for a "sag test" and it has not budged. I feel confident it will stay and I am now ready for drywall installation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product!! Easy to install, Safe to handle I bought this for a bath and baby's room renovation. I wanted an insulation that would provide a good sound barrier, as well as be easy to handle. I believe I found what I was looking for. Install was very easy. I have an older house and not all of the wall cavities were the same size. It was simple to tear along the perforations to get the correct size. In a couple situations the perforated size options did not fit my needs and I had to tear the insulation where it was not perforated. It is do-able but don't expect it to tear straight. Also, blue fibers go everywhere. I ended up wearing a respirator while installing. Make sure to order the width slightly wider than your wall cavity as it is tough to get two smaller pieces to stay in place when friction fitting. Overall great product with no fiberglass itch!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it!! Very easy to install. Wish there was more variety in the quantities you have to purchase. This is only pennies per foot more than fiberglass insulation and very well worth it. VERY easy to install. I am a woman in my mid fifties and I hung some 900' of ceiling and walls by myself in a day. It was like stuffing pillows into the spaces. Perforations make it so that almost every space you have is prefit and the 16" whole pieces fit very well. I could hear the sound deadening effect immediately, even before the sheetrock was hung. The cons are how dusty it is (but what insulation isn't) and when you do have to cut the length I found a good pair of scissors worked better than a utility knife. I also wish you had more choices in the number of bags you had to buy, say 6 or 8 bags vs. 12 bags.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Construction use I insulated a 1200 sq ft newly constructed house, walls & ceilings. Used R13 in walls and R30 in ceilings. No itch, but still had to use a dust mask as it does release cotton, like the lint you find in your dryer filter. Way better than fiberglass. Hard to cut so we ended up just tearing it by hand. Came out ok. The only problem is that it is dense and heavier than fiberglass so it sags and falls out of walls & ceilings if not tight fitting. We ended up running bare on ceiling at 18" centers to keep it from falling out. With the banging on the roof by the roofers, it would just fall out. Other than that, it is a good sound deadening, environmentally friendly and formaldehyde free product. Will use it again now that I know how to handle it.

I would give this 4.5 stars if possible, but it really is an excelent product. The only cons is it very dusty, and is hard to find without buying a whole pallet (at least here in CO). Some people have reported difficulty cutting this insulation, which I agree is not easy, but it is very easy to tear. I've used Ultra Touch on a few projects now and personally feel it is worth the greater investment. I just put it in a music studio/room I am building, and the sound dampening is very good. I intend to make a few sound baffles out of the pieces I have left. I put the insulation in walls and ceiling. On the ceiling I had to run strings and stapled to hold it in place pre drywall. I also used the staples to tack it in the walls to keep it from settling. The batts are fairly thick and relatively heavy compared to fiberglass insulation. All in all, a great product. I personally like the recycled composition and non-itchy installation a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Insulation Choice Bought this insulation as a sound barrier between the main floor and the basement that I am finishing. The floor joists were at odd widths, generally between 19 - 21 inch centers. The perforations made it easy to get a nice fit. About 80% of them had two perforations each. The other 20% only had one perforation down the center. I wish they all had the same double perforations. Insulation is not itchy like fiberglass. But is very dusty, making a mask and goggles a necessity. Almost impossible to cut. But very easy to tear, so I had no issues. I even tore lengthwise when the pieces did not have a double perforation. I used insulation wires to hold the bats in the top of the floor joists. After installation, sound reduction was incredible in the previously "paper thin" floor. The marginally extra cost was well worth ease of installation and sound reduction qualities.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great insulation picked up last week from store . just got started installing this morning . i ordered the 23 in wide because my studs are are one foot centers . the way the materal is already cut into diffarent sizes has made it very easy to install . when i do have to cut one in half i have used a grinder with a cutting wheel . makes good even smooth cuts . installed two bags in less than 2 hours . and can already tell a differance in temp in my basement . great stuff

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mineral wool is far superior for sound attenuation. The... Mineral wool is far superior for sound attenuation. The fibers are less noxious than glass but the dust fills the air will burn your eyes and requires respiration. It does not overfill the cavity and requires staples to hold it in place, hence it will sag. Do not use for exterior wall cavities.
